11th Day of Fall, 523 AV

As the sun crested the horizon at the seventh bell of the day, Nayato was already standing within the small arena of the Proving Grounds. He had awoken from his bed at the barracks around the fourth bell, showed his brand to Marshal Tarak at The Gold Lodge to eat a light breakfast there, before making his way over to the Proving Grounds.

When Captain Eleuia told Nayato yesterday to arrive early for training he took her words seriously.

The rookie boxer set all of his weaponry, a backpack, the breastplate of his leather armor, and his linen shirt down on a section of the bench seating that looked down onto the arena floor. Nayato walked about the sands of the arena, running his fingers along the full length of the inner wall as he waited for the captain. He made one full pass before remembering Eleuia’s instructions for him to shadow box whenever he had free time. The Boxer took up the same spot he was in yesterday at the center of the arena. He raised both his hands up before curling his fingers into fists to stand in a boxing stance.

He stood with his feet at a shoulders width apart with his non-dominant left foot forward by half of a step of his natural gait. He mostly stood on the balls of his feet with his heels raised off the ground. The Boxer tested his balance by bending at his knees to see if his ankles would roll. He stood at a natural height of six foot two inches in height and felt a slight pinch at his ankle as he bounced along the balls of his feet. He got rid of the pain by shifting his stance two more inches wider apart to accommodate his height. Nayato began to shadowbox against an invisible enemy once he felt comfortable with his stance.

He jabbed out at the air as if to strike at the face of someone who stood at an equal height to himself. His lead fist was sent on a very slow trip out into the open air in a straight line from his shoulder, with no other dip or swaying of his body. It was a slow jab that he used to warm up the rotation of his shoulder and grow comfortable with the length of his arm to understand his own attack range. His rear right hand remained upright by the side of his face in a guard position the entire time he punched.

Nayato shadowboxed in silence with the only sounds he could hear being his own intense breathing. It took about ten more ticks before he heard other Dragoons starting their own personal practices around the Proving Grounds. He unfurled his fingers to stretch his palm when the black freckles on his fingertips felt the cooling pull of water that informed him there was motion coming from his left.

He knew someone was approaching him and turned his attention to them.

“You arrived before I did. Good.” A woman’s voice called out from the entrance into the arena.

Nayato pivoted on his lead foot to face Captain Eleuia as he balled his fist back up to maintain his boxing stance. “Run around the arena to continue to warm up until I tell you to stop.”

Nayato began to run around the arena at a pace that was slightly above that of a jog.

His boots drummed against the dirt as he kept his head and shoulders upright. He stood tall because he was not truly running with proper form, but instead he kept his hands up in an upright boxing stance. He made three passes around the arena before his sides started to burn which slowed his pace down enough to be considered a jog. Nayato grunted against the sensations of cardiovascular pain as he willed his feet to continue onward as soon as his step struck at the ground.

The Boxer kept his body upright against the rigid tension growing within his shoulders that urged his tired torso to slouch forward to find relief. That sensation went against Nayato's desire to remain in an upright-stance that favored attacking as he ran, so he raised his balled fists higher to adjust his posture as his feet landed underneath his body at a joggers pace.

Nayato gritted his teeth together as if that was going to help him run faster. His nostrils flared for more air as he continued onward as his feet assaulted the sand. He glanced up at the bleacher seats to find Captain Eleuia sitting down at them. Every time he rounded the arena wall closest to where she looked down at him he could see that she was running a longsword against a whetstone.

"I have seen boxers who've trained to fight at Tall Johnny's run around the city for days on end. If five ticks of running already has you out of breath then It looks like you are going to need to run more. Today we are going to be focusing on defensive movements...." The Dragoon Captain said while making her way down into the arena to stand in a fighting stance with her sword in her right hand and a small leather shield in the other. "Stop running and take a fighting stance in front of me."

Nayato did not slow his stride as he jogged over to Eleuia. His hands were already upright as he shifted his feet a shoulders width apart to support himself.

"Defensive movements?"

The Chaktawe thought to himself while shaking off a strong feeling of vulnerability from being so close to an armed individual as he stood there unarmed, but Nayato tucked in his fists closer to guard his chin while rolling his shoulders forward to enter into a full-crouch defensive stance.

"We went over jabs, uppercuts, a brief glance at straight-crosses, along with forward and retreating footwork. As you can see, I have not mentioned hooks or proper uses of straight punches with your dominant hand. That is because I want you to be a defensive fighter. Today will be all about slipping, bobbing, blocking, covering-up, clinching, and pulling away. Only if you are sure you are going to connect while maintaining a solid stance, do I want you to throw a power punch. Your first goal today is use your forward footwork to advance at me. Obviously...,"

Eleuia raised her longsword up straight at Nayato's face as she continued talking.

"... if you advance forward you will impel yourself onto my sword. That is why you are going to bob your body off from my swords line of attack. Begin with a forward evasive dip, then continue onward while bobbing under and laterally slipping to either side of the blade to avoid touching it. Take note of the length of my sword, if you wish to be a boxer than some day it will be just you versus an armed opponent. Once you are close enough..."

Eleuia held the small leather shield down to protect the left side of her body.

"I want you to end the sequence with a right hook to the body aimed at the shield. You are not allowed to rest until you use your retreating footwork to bob and slip your way backwards out of range. Now begin."

Nayato had no questions since the Captain's orders were clear and concise.

His eyes locked onto the tip of the longsword as he shuffled his lead foot forward, yet slightly further to the left along the ground while he dipped his head down to bob under the bottom of the blade, and ducked under it to slip to the side of it.

The Boxer kept both of his hands up to protect his head as he now stood with Eleuia's sword held in place just above his right shoulder. He shifted his gaze down to look towards the Captain's abdomen while keeping an eye on the swords position using his peripheral vision.

All Nayato could think about for a moment was that if Eleuia wanted to cut his neck then all she would need to do is swing the blade sideways a few inches to her right. It was a brief thought that vanish from his mind as soon as he got back to work advancing forward.

Nayato bent his knees at deeper angles so that he could tilt his upper body forward easier. He shuffled his left foot forward by a half step while ducking his upper body at the hips until his head slipped to the other side of the sword.

As Nayato continued to advance he dipped his head under the sword yet again, only this time the Captain slowly moved the sword with Nayato's movement to keep it over his head. He stepped to the side to attempt to get out from under the weapon which ultimately failed.

Nayato remained in a low crouch with the blade over his head while not wanting to retreat from his position. Besides, Eleuia said for him not to retreat until he landed his punch.

He side stepped around Eleuia in a full circle in a cat-and-mouse chase until she held the blade still so he could slip to stand fully to her side. She did not leave him time to celebrate by bashing the leather shield into at his arms. She only used enough power to test his guard rather than to shove him away.

Nayato flexed his biceps in response to brace his forearms against the leather to hold firm and block the attack.

"I want you to view punches as blades that should be avoided at all cost. If I were unarmed, you could use your shoulder to guide punches away from your face as you bobbed. Bobbing focuses on moving your head from side to side as you advance. A slip means to move your entire body away from a punch. If you can not do one, then slip away completely to regain your footing. If I change things up, It's up to you to decide which motion is appropriate as we train to achieve the end results I order you to preform."

He listened to Eleuia speak as he side stepped to his side to dip his head fully under the blade while shifting his body completely to the her right side, rather than just remain under the blade. The step allowed him to reset his position.

He lashed out with his left arm in a light jab to use the punch as a tool to measure his range before bending as his knees, shifting his lead leg to the side, and bobbing his head under the sword.

At the same time as he ducked, he rotated the hinge of his hips while rolling his shoulder to the right to send his right arm out in a curved arc to slam his fist against the leather shield she held by her lower abdomen in a right hook.

The collision of bone hitting against the leather shield sent a pain through his arm which rattled his elbow. It was a pain all new boxers felt which would dull with time and practice. It hurt, but it was not the worst pain he felt. His right bicep burned as the punch caused the Eight-Point Sun & Sword brand of the Sun's Birth he received on it eleven days ago to radiate with pain. It caused his right hand to lag behind his left had by a few seconds as he lifted his fists to guard his face. The horrible grunt he made caused Captain Eleuia to speak out to keep the Raider focused. "Fights not over, fight through the pain, and get to safety."

Nayato shuffled his rear foot backwards along the ground as he dragged his lead foot after. He did not slip, but just dipped from side to side at the hinges of his hips to bob backwards until he was standing a foot away from the tip of her long sword.

To ignore pain was a difficult thing. Nayato’s body begged him to take a moment to catch his breath, but his mind understood the logic of the lesson that Captain Eleuia was trying to teach him. It was a simple lesson to only take a break when he felt safe. He found it incredibly hard to feel safe while the glint of a sharpened blade lingered in the air a few inches away from his face. The fight was only over once she put her sword away.

“The fight is not over. Get to safety."

He spoke Eleuia’s words to himself within his head as he launched out with his left hand in a jab towards her body. He used the forward motion of the jab to also shift his foot forward. The main goal of his jab was to measure how far away from Captain Eleuia he was while at the same time bobbing his head down under the blade during his advance. He kept his right hand up near his chin to protect his face while pulling his left fist back into a guard position.

A soft pain began to grow along Nayato's right shoulder.

It was clear from the sensation of a light liquid running down his left arm from his shoulder that he was bleeding. His shoulder grazed against the edge of Captain Eleuia's longsword on his upward rise after his bob which left a shallow cut. The rookie Boxer shifted his feet wider apart by an inch to allow him to duck deeper in order to give his body a much wider berth away from the blade.

"Looks like you have a brain between those eyes." The Dragoon Captain said while watching the new Raider not stop to take a breath. "The streets will not have any rules like those you may face when fighting within Tall Johnny's pits. Once a fight has started... be it a fist-fight or with weapons, always assume that it is to the death; like those at the Den within the Blood Pits. The Den is a cesspit of everything that is wrong about this city. Keep your face and brand hidden if you ever find yourself there, it is not only deep into Daggerhand territory but full of slime and small time gangs that the Daggerhand lack the discipline and ability to control in their own territory. Do not rest in a true fight until the enemy is beaten to death or into submission. Be as merciless as the blades of Myri."

Nayato listened to her words as he bent deeper at the knees to tip his head down towards his right hip to bob under the blade while stepping forward. It was a motion he was getting used to preforming as he boobed and weaved his way until he was in range of the shield to strike it. He torqued his hips to gather energy as he swung his right arm in a curved arc to bash his fist against the shield in a right hook.

Captain Eleuia held the sword with the flat of its blade running parallel to the ground the whole time. When she turned it so the blades edge ran parallel to the ground, Nayato pressed down on his left foot to leap sideways to throw his body to the right further away from the weapon in an awkward jump. He landed on the ground with both feet despite fumbling over them for a moment before he returned to a full crouched fighting stance.

It was a slip, albeit an awkward one, to remove his body entirely from the path of supposed danger. He watched from where he stood to Captain Eleuia's side as she just rolled the hilt of the sword in her hand to turn the blade parallel to the earth again.

Captain Eleuia returned the longsword to its sheath at her side to free up her hands which she promptly balled into fists. Nayato flexed his own hands to tighten his fists as he stood on the balls of his feet. He did not know what the Captain was about to do, but he understood that it was going to hurt if he was not ready. His nostrils flared as he a took deep breath while tucking his chin down closer to his chest to cover up his head with his arms.

The Captain invaded Nayato's personal space by inviting herself in with a forward jab. The metal of her gauntlets bashed against his forearms with resounding force. She punched at his body using the gauntlets as weapons rather than following through with punches meant to break through something like she would strike at an enemy.

The rookie boxer leaned back with each strike against his arms to pull back in attempt to dissipate the force. He slowly shifted his feet backwards to retreat away from her. "One, two, three, and pause. One, two, three, and pause." Nayato counted the rhythm of the Captain's jabs against his guarding forearms while retreating backwards. She simply attacked him with jabs in rapid secession until Nayato's back foot touched against the wall of the arena. "One, two, three, and pause. One, two, three, and pause." His arms burned as she focused at punching at his guard.

"One, two..." He thought to himself while gritting his teeth. When she jabbed out with her third strike Nayato shifted his left leg forward along the ground to widen his stance. His stable foundation allowed him to bob his head down in an evasive dip to circle down under her jab as if flew passed the right side of his head. His head arched upwards as her arm diverted away from his face by glancing off of his shoulder. The glancing punch still hurt his shoulder which left a welt behind on his skin but he had no time to worry about that.

"... three, and pause. One, two, three, and pause..." Nayato began to hinge at his hips to bob under each of the Captain's jabs like he did when ducking under the sword in timed, yet rapid succession. It was clear to him that the Dragoon Captain was keeping a pace of strikes meant for the rookie boxer to learn how to time his dodges properly.

"I need to get away from the wall. He thought during the moment of pause after Eleuia's third jab. Nayato shifted his foot a few inches to his left as he watched another jab fly towards him from the narrow view between his arms. The dip he made this time had more force as he pressed off of his lead foot to quickly step towards her side and away from the wall. The Boxer pivoted on his lead foot as soon as his step met the ground to keep facing her with his arms up.

For a full bell, the rest of Nayato's individual training at the Proving Grounds under Captain Eleuia consisted of him dancing away from her jabs. At the end of the session his shoulders were lined with welts from her glancing strikes and his forearms were dotted with bruises.
