Unlikely Alliances (Jokor)

83rd Winter, 510 A.V.

Only recently returned to Syliras and Hadrian was already ready to move on. He didn't plan on remaining for very long, but his best-laid plans had a way of changing on him when he least expected, so he tried not to remain married to the plans he did make. Just walking down the streets in late winter, he recalled many a youthful memory from growing up in the town of the Knights, but now it was haunted by ghosts, and not the kind who would actually speak to a person, but the sort that made one feel haunted.

He looked over his shoulder. Nothing. He blinked, and his Auristic vision overlaid his more mundane sense, but the djed revealed little behind him. He continued to walk.

One thing was clear: he had to find a way to build up investment capital in himself or he would always be working for someone else, rather than inventing magical marvels on his own miza and schedule like the great Areesa Tallshade had done.

Bone white in the chill, his feet crunched bits of snow into the road, and he was careful to avoid patches of ice. This was nothing like the cold of Zeltiva, with it's bone-snapping marine winds and storms and famines. Still, the University town felt more like home even if he had been wandering far from it for almost a year now.

Unlikely Alliances (Jokor)

Postby Jokor on January 29th, 2011, 8:01 pm

Jokor was running trough the streets while he was pulling the cloak he was wearing closer around himself with one hand, keeping his hood on with the other one. Cursing himself how a few times sleeping in a warm comfortable bed already made his body a bit to eager to get out of the cold and back into the warmth of an inn. He stopped for a while and looked around, he didn't recognize this part of the city, great he was lost...again.
He grit his teeth in frustration, he really didn't want to ask a knight and risk his face recognized on a later date and with the citizens there was the issue if they wanted to tell him, a few of those bastards just ignored him and the rest either pointed him to a knight or didn't know where he had to go.
He let out a loud sigh and walked up towards the closed person in his sight.
A tall thin man towereing a feet and a few inches over him.
"Hey big guy!" He yelled in what he hoped wasn't a hostile tone. "I got some questions for ya? would ya mind if I asked them?" He walked up in front of him so that the man could either go around him, which would end with jokor tripping him for being such a biggot, turning around or just being nice and answering his questions.

Big guy was not an epithet Hadrian usually received, though he was rather tall. His gaze shot toward the voice, Auristics still engaged, and he saw craft and guile, but also an honesty, at least about his question. There seemed to be no malice or danger. Pausing, grateful for the distraction from his thoughts, he turned toward the short young man. In his winterbane coat, he hardly felt the cold, and as such he could walk and walk for hours with his thoughts running around in his head like errant children.

"How may I help you?" he asked, polite as an aristocrat, even though his family was somewhere between old money and nouveau riche. His tone was educated and slightly aloof; though he tried to always think outside the box, there was an element of the ivory tower intellectual to him."

Jokor just looked at the tall man with a confused look on his face when he talked to him, he was glad he talked to him but he sounded like one of those guy's who had their heads so far in the sky they could actually lick the feet of the gods.
This one sounded nice though so he just shrugged.
"You know where that tall building that rents rooms is?" Jokor looked up to the tall man with a hopeful expression on his face, hoping that he could help him.
"I only got here a few days ago and I have no clue how the city works at the moment." He pulled his wool cloak closer around him a flicker of gratitude went towards Jaelyn for giving him that. Or else he would be an icicle right now.
"So do you know where that building is?"

Unlikely Alliances (Jokor)

Hadrian considered the question. He had always lived with his parents while in Syliras, though he was aware of some of the places where rooms could be had. He didn't want to pass undue judgment on the kid, not after spending time in Alvadas where nothing was what it seemed.

"Well, there's Traveler's Row for temporary housing, though from what I understand many people make it a nearly permanent arrangement. If you're looking for a house, though, you go to the Housing Authority..."

He broke off, not meaning to give offense. What teenage ragamuffin could afford a house in Syliras? Still, the information was still valid even if it seemed unlikely that he could make such a purchase.

Jokor perked up as the first option he said jogged his memory again.
"Yeah the Travelers row that was it!" Jokor jumped at that word and the hope that he knew where it was.
"That was the building I got a room in, you know where it is?"
He said ignoring the information about housing, he didn't need a house anytime soon and it would probably be to expensive for him anyway.
Jokor looked up at the rich looking man and waited for his answer, pulling the cloak a bit tighter around himself."

Hadrian pulled his winterbane coat closer about himself as well, wondering if this kid was trying to roll him. The Traveler's Row was built into Syliras' city walls, so it was generally easy to find; still, those walls spanned the entirety of the city proper, so finding the exact bit might be a challenge if one wasn't willing to find the wall and follow it until things got familiar, he supposed.

And it wasn't as if Hadrian had anything pressing to deal with just then.

"Come along, then," he said, starting off in the wrong direction to throw off the kid's posse if they were laying in wait; he began what was a rather circuitous route toward Traveler's Row, offering ample opportunity for the young man to find something familiar and go the rest of the way himself. On the one hand, that would be more convenient for Hadrian, it was true, but Hadrian's philosophy of teaching, even informally like this, was to point a person in the right direction, and let them figure things out themselves.

"I'm Hadrian," he offered.

Unlikely Alliances (Jokor)

Postby Jokor on January 31st, 2011, 2:02 pm

Jokor forced down the jealousy he felt as the man drew its expensive coat around himself, that thing would probably keep the wearer warm no matter how cold it was outside..or inside it was hard to tell with this strange city. I mean It looked like it was mostly build in the insides of a large building the market was even in the basement!
Jokor just pushed that particular piece of strangeness to the back of his mind, he would wonder later about that when he was back in his room and not freezing his but off. And quickly picked up his pace so that he was walking besides the long man, not noticing at all that he was let in the wrong direction.

"You can call me Jokor." He replied when Hadrian introduced himself and waited if the man wanted to bring up conversation. After a few moments walking in silence Jokor just looked up towards hadrian.
"So, you have an idea how they build this city inside a building?"It looked a good point to start a conversation and he was curious about it anyway.

"Joker?" he asked, not commenting on the strangeness of his name. Perhaps he was an orphan or something and chose a name for himself. But the other question he could sure answer, perhaps even better as a student of anthropology than merely as a man who had spent his childhood there.

"The Syliran Knights built this place as a bastion against the cruel world, trying to create an easily guarded fortress so that the fruits of civilization could grow again behind the aegis of their strength. They're a military order, so there's a certain military efficiency to things, but that is how it works... It isn't all interior, as in roofed in... but it is interior to the walls, and... well, it has kept the world at bay for the most part.

"Where are you from?"

Unlikely Alliances (Jokor)

Jokor scowled as he heard the man bastardize his name to joker.
"No, its Jokor. Not Joker." He answered with the tone of somebody who had to correct his name a few times to many. "One is somebody who lets you laugh and the other one is me."
A mischievous grin spread on Jokor's face. "I'll let you get away with it this time, just don't screw it up again."

Jokor listened to Hadrians explanation of how this city was build and why it is what it is today, Filtering out what he thought was useless and shoving the few things that didn't look useless to him in the back of his mind. As far as jokor cared on the knowledge about not being completely inside the building and that the knights where a military order where of interest. They would know their fortress as the back of their hand and they would probably have no problem with stringing him up as a warning if they caught him.

"Where are you from?" Jokor looked back up to the man as he asked that.
"I'm from Sunberth," Before hadrian could even begin to say something Jokor was already continuing.
"And no I am not going to knock you over the head and rob you blind, the knights would have my head if I did that."
