Nya Winters
Physical Appearance:
Nya is far stronger in body and spirit than she looks. To those that know her true racial identity, the cat-like movements and grace she displays is clearly evident. Nya likes to be higher than the surrounding terrain. Her moss green eyes miss very little that goes on around her, and like her base creature the Talderian Forest Cat, Nya is a good at moving through crowds and blending in - either in a large city like Syliras or the forests surrounding Mizahar. She has a long sleek fall of brindled hair. Nya tends to hide behind her hair to conceal her otherwise penetrating stare.
In her Forest Cat guise, Nya is a monstrous dire-sized molted black great cat that has patterning or rosettes of brown and moss green. Her fur shimmers as she moves, often playing tricks on the eyes and blending her neatly into the forest around her. In the city or grasslands, she is obviously out of her element and can be very vulnerable.
Forest cats have a naturally hypnotic gaze and often capture their prey by locking gazes with them before pouncing. Her eyes, however, are a soft green that blends into the colors of the forest. In her Kelvic Form, she has a huge almost luminous gaze. As a human, her pupils are slightly more cat-like diamond shaped than rounded, giving the keen observer a clue she might be kelvic.
Upon cursory inspection, some will think her hair is black or dark brown. But the truth is its mottled through with greens, browns and golds. It is the same dark (almost black) coat her forest cat coat has (complete with nearly invisible spotting called rosettes) which give her kelvic form perfect camouflage in the wilds. Nya has long slender fingers, a love of intricately woven fabrics, and enjoys her meat raw. She often relies heavily on her sense of smell to tell her who is who, and can often figure out other kelvics and creatures like Dhani.
Character Concept:
When Nya was younger, the Forest Cat had a noted lack of understanding as to what is right and what is wrong. This was not uncommon for her age and race. Kelvic take the 'terrible twos' to an all new extreme when they are out 'finding themselves' as Nya was doing. Her parents tried to guide her, but in the end they decided it would be best to have her strike out into the world and find someone to bond with and take up the mantle of their ethics. They tried to 'foster' her out to people but no one seemed suitable, so they simply packed her bags and sent her on her way. It was either that or their own union was going to suffer under their very precocious daughter's antics.
The true problem, Nya felt, was that every single person her parents thought she might bond to ended up being more afraid of her Kelvic form than they let on. Having a Dire creature, especially a fierce cat, tends to invoke caution and concern which then in turn ruins the potential for bonding. The whole situation was fine with Nya, as she had a great relationship with both her parents and periodically wandered back to Lormar Tower see them.
Nya takes 'not worried about it' to a new extreme. She simply isn't ever worried. Perhaps having no concept of whats 'the law' and what isn't helps tremendously. When she gets hungry, she eats. She has no qualms about what it is she does eat and could easily be considered a cannibal since she has no qualms about eating someone who threatens her. This is probably another factor in her failure to bond early on. Her mother tried to break her of the habit but failed completely when Nya refused to believe rotting as a corpse in the ground was preferable to filling someone's belly. But for all of her eating habits, Nya has a very normal not overtly out spoken personality. As a human she is gentle, often kind, and somewhat wary of humans. Because her kelvic form is so strong, it makes her human form feel unbalanced and vulnerable to her - so crowds are not easy for her to deal with. Often, this can cause trouble. Much of it she's excused for (in her youth) because of her race, since Kelvics are commonplace within Sylira and people understand inherently they don't play by the same rules - not out of necessity, but out of their very nature.
In other places, its not so understandable. And, of course, as she's aged, her personality has changed a great deal due to her life experiences and the relationships shes formed with others.
Having been touched by Zulrav since before birth, Nya spends a great deal of time pondering the weather and playing with the winds. Sometimes, to her it seems her only true friends are the breezes that play among the trees. She speaks to them as if they are companions, and listens for the voice of their Lord with eager watchfulness because Zulrav broadens her narrow bestial world considerably with his influence. She likes the winds, is drawn to the power of storms, and feels at home among them.
Character History:
Nya was born to Zilvia Winters a prominent mage in the bronze woods. Zilvia's constant companion, mount, and protector is Ulvic. She bought Ulvic at a horse fair in Syliras not realizing the stallion was anything but a mere nicely put together red dun horse trained enough to be a sturdy mount. The stallion, while himself being a great deal more trouble than he was worth, eventually took his human form and charmed Silvia's heart. They've lived together ever since, with Ziliva working hard to find a way to lengthen Ulvic's life. She has somewhat succeeded, being something of a prominent mage herself.
When Nya was born, her parents were both startled at her nature for it is rare that a Kelvic breeds true Kelvics. Ziliva taught Nya what she could to protect her, which equated to a great deal of Personal Magics in the realm of hypnotism. Nya was a natural, having that unique Talderian Forest Cat stare already. Most Kelvics do not have a good childhood because they are oftentimes met with horror or misunderstanding when what should be a normal babe eats ten times its usual body weight and grows to adulthood in a single year. Nya was lucky she had Ulvic to guide her and show Ziliva there is nothing to fear.
When Nya was two, her parents escorted her out the front door and hard released her out into the world. She wandered a while, most of that year, and then met Abashai on a fluke in the Wilderness. The bonding was almost instantaneous and strong, something that both Nya and Abashai were unprepared for. Later that year, after more wandering, the two were married. Close, in love, almost inseparable, there was a reason for this.
Nya and Abashai were the reincarnation of Aressa Tallshade and Jefrek a Witness Mage companion of hers. They discovered this answering a call from Zulrav and battling the creatures of the bloodsink, a famous hiding place of one of Aressa's artifacts.
Areesa Tallshade was a famous Alahean wizard who lived before the Valterrian. She was known as the White Enchantress because of her white robes and her ability to craft magical items of great value and significance, most notably the lost Anvil of Souls. She is one of the only pre-Valterrian wizards to still be remembered by more than a few scholars in modern Mizahar. Her items are highly sought after, and every now and then one appears on the market, though they often turn out to be fakes, either nonmagical or crafted by one of her apprentices. It is estimated that a high-level Tallshade original could be worth millions of gold Miza, hence the constant treasure hunt for her items.
Nya and Abashai defeated an incredibly powerful enemy there and eventually recovered the Powercube and its Outling sentient guardian Lukas. Having stashed the Powercube successfully in the Wildlands, later the following year after facing death by Abashai's hand and loosing a child, both the duo were captured by the Ebonstryfe in the process of destroying a Rhysol Temple that had manifested outside of Syliras.
They spent a year in prison in Ravok. This was their personal hell. As the time passed Nya and Abashai were broken down, and their bonds broken - both marriage and that of their kelvic bond. Abashai became an agent of the Ebonstryfe and was marked with a singular mark of Rhysol. Nya was eventually experimented on then sold into slavery to a noble house as a pet.
Eventually they escaped. Abashai escaped with his young son - from an Blacksun Priestess - and Nya with her life. Abashai returned south to his homeland of Eyktol to deliver Micah to family to raise. Nya returned to her parents home - Lormar Tower - and found it in ruin and her family gone. This was well past the Djed Storm of 512 so she assumed the storm was the ravisher of the tower. She is unaware if her family is still alive.
Nya remained at Lormar for some time. It wasn't until the Spring of 516 when Abashai reappeared that she got herself together enough - recovering enough from the abuse at Ravok - to take some interest in life. By that time they'd heard of Syka. Still unbonded, still unmarried and recovering, the two of them traveled together to Syka to see if they couldn't start fresh again.
It also happens that Syka is the closest location to the next artifact Nya wishes to find that she feels was once hers... The Najim Pearl: an item rumored to allow a wizard to keep as many Familiars as he wanted, as opposed to only one. Time has been hard on both of them and the pathway forward is not set.
Once settled in Syka, Abashai did not stay. The pair did not renew their bond or marriage. Instead, The Benshira vanished and Nya assumed Abashai returned to Eyktol for his son, perhaps to raise him, leaving Nya alone and broken in Syka. Nya is getting better, however. She's found a purpose in the new Settlement and has a job that suits her well - a Syka Ranger. She likes protecting the Settlement and exploring new areas, cutting trail, and escorting people in the jungle. Syka is small and there's nothing there yet to overwhelm her.
Special Attributes:
Because Nya is a kelvic, she has several special abilities. She's also received a curse in thread that needs to be resolved eventually.
- Shapeshifting: Talderian Forest Cat (Dire)
- Heightened Senses:Emphasis on Sense of Smell, Nightvision
- Kelvic Features:Her brindled hair is unusual.
- Special Requirements: Large quantities of food preferably raw meat
- The Curse: "The curse is such that whenever Nya looks into a reflective surface; mirror, pool of water, etc., she sees a darker, twisted reflection looking back. The reflection in human form looks almost normal save for her eyes. Her eyes are hateful, hungry and devoid of intelligence; they are the eyes of a ravenous monster. The reflection in feline form is also monstrous to behold; jagged, broken teeth stained with blood, wild, un-thinking eyes with matted and mangy fur.
Nya is the only one who can see the reflections and from time to time, when she sees them, she hears the barely audible words of Calinthar telling her how much of a monster she is and how he is the only one that can save her."
