Description:
Although not particularly hard to find, the hut is well off the beaten path. Deep within the wild, tangled woods, the ramshackle building is slowly being swallowed up by its surroundings. If not for the careful care of its only occupant, it would be consumed by vines or become a den to the odd animal or two. Not much to look upon, yet sought by many. Those who searched for this place of refuge sought not the building, but the man. For years, the Hermit of the Hut, Bardrin, lived in peace in quiet, having escaped the bustle of every day city life for the confines of his simple home. In fact, his actual home wasn’t the hut at all.
The hut was very simple. Circular with a single entrance, there was almost no privacy from the elements or visitors, for there wasn’t even a door attached to the frame. Carefully chosen logs were stood on end, tied closely together to form one, curved, seamless wall. The roof consisted of pieces of wood, similar to those of the wall. These were secured around the top of the wall, overhanging the side and coming to a point in the very center. Mud and other debris were placed into the larger gaps on the wall and roof, in an attempt to make the hut as sturdy as possible. In a final attempt to deny the elements, large pieces of bark and moss cover the roof, overlapping and secure.
The caretaker who occupied this place left everything as it was, disturbing as little plant and animal life as possible, building the hut where it was convenient for nature. It was located in a medium sized clearing, rich with resources, plant life, and natural shelter. Despite the occupants’ careful ministrations, vines creep up the sides of the hut, around the base, and begin to sneak tendrils into the cracks of the roof, compromising the huts durability until they are torn down. Moss and ferns surround the hut, obscuring any kind of path or trail to or away from the site. The area around the hut wasn’t particularly dense, nor was the building hidden from view. Anyone who stepped through the thicker line of trees fifty yards away would clearly see the hut. Trees grew haphazardly, like in any forest, all competing for sunlight and resources. Some used the hut to their advantage, growing up the sides and peeking over the roof. Others stood twisted an ugly, trying to defy the man-made object, and failing to thrive.
Every morning, Bardrin appears from among the trees, walks across the clearing and disappears into the shadows of the ramshackle building. No sounds or movements can be seen from within, no loud explosions to indicate secret experiments. No whisperings to suggest deceit or summoning. Most who happen upon the hut think it abandoned and its outward appearance is frail enough to dissuade any type of curious explorations. Those who are looking for Bardrin know what to expect. Bardrin sits in the exact center of the floor inside of the hut, meditating from sunrise to sunset. An Expert Hypnotist, he suffers from the backlash of overgiving. Lost in his own head and subject to experience his own Obsessive Conditioning the only way to even attempt to have a sane thought is through meditation. Consistently, his insanity returns day after day, and only on rare occasions does Bardrin have a clairvoyant thought. His Obsession tells him very simply that he cannot trust a single soul on the planet.
Regardless of the fact that he made the detrimental mistake of overgiving, many still yearn for his knowledge, a surprising amount of those going so far as to seek his refuge. For those who seek Bardrin must get lucky, and find him on a clairvoyant day. His expert hypnotism skills, and his relative popularity and acclaim that his name receives are enough for many an adventurer to search out the dilapidated hut.
