The Graveyard To the western side of the island, beyond the Chapel, is the graveyard. This is where generations of dead citizens are interred, and where funerals and marriages are held by Basia. Tombstones stand row on row, marking graves and telling guests and mourners who lies where. Ghosts, animals and people alike, linger, dwelling in the melancholy atmosphere. Fog often rolls in off of the water, clouding the blackened grass, obscuring stones, ghosts, and everything else in its wake. It is one of the few places where any vegetation grows naturally, if you can call it that. The grass is more for decoration than anything else, and no matter how much it is stepped on, it usually springs back up after a while. Down through the middle of the graveyard, behind the Chapel, is a mosaic walkway made of stone. This leads up to an altar before a statue of a hooded figure, arms outstretched towards the sky. This is their Goddess, and it is before the Dead Queen that people are married, and eulogies for the fortunate dead delivered. Folding chairs can be removed from a mausoleum-like structure which functions as a storage area and set up in rows for events. Aside from Basia, there are no set caretakers - only ghosts who pitch in. While it needs no tending, gardening, or guarding, visitors who might wish to deface the hallowed ground often, or cause trouble here, find annoyed spirits in their faces. May the gods help them them, for no one else will. |
