Ayren

Basic Information

Race: Inarta
Birthday & Age : Born in Summer of 487 AV (23 years old)
Gender: Male
Height: 5'8"

Physical Description

Though of average height for an Inarta, Ayren's slim build often causes people to peg him as smaller than he actually is. Ayren isn't built for fighting, and as such the only weapon he can competently use is a bow. His hair is the traditional red of his people, bright and fiery. Its straight, with no trace of waves, and he keeps it cut so that its only long enough to brush his shoulders. Usually Ayren doesn't tie it up, preferring to leave it down to blow in the wind. In the tradition of his people, there are several small braids tied off with simple black beads. Dark and peaceful, Ayren's eyes are a clear gray. Only when you stand right next to him do you see that they are really a watered down shade of blue that hides an easy smile and bright laughter.

Character Concept

Ayren is always on the fringes of a crowd, preferring not to be the center of attention. More at home in the wilderness, he spends much of his time wandering outside the city, even going as far as to camp out there instead of in the city. He thinks that the caverns of the city can be confining, and his favorite place to be when he's there is in the Courtyard of the Sky. Ayren is slow to initiate conversations with strangers, though those who talk to him find that he is quite friendly and shows all the boldness and forwardness that is characteristic of the Inarta people. Although he trained as a hunter, Ayren refuses to actually hunt. Dating back to the time when his brother Kimri died, he has hated death and avoided it at all costs. He feels that all life is worth living, even if it is just an animals. Stemming from this partly is his reason for becoming a survival skills teacher, in that his students would have a higher chance of living though the wilderness. Yet, more than that Ayren enjoys teaching, and feels that the passing on of knowledge is something special.

Character History

Ayren was born in the Summer of 487 AV. His mother, Enira, was a falconer. She was one of the best, ranked just below the Endal in proficiency. His father, Tormir, was a traveler. Originally from Wind Reach himself, he traveled most of the year, but had decided it was time to have a children so settled down in Wind Reach once again. Ayren also had a twin brother, Kimri.

It was clear from almost the moment they were born that the twins were going to be as different as night and day. While they always played together as small children do, Ayren and Kimri were opposites. Kimri took after their mother, not just in looks but in personality to. He had her wavy hair, and eyes the color of water. He was outspoken and social, and always seemed to leap before he looked. Most of all her got her love of falconry. Ayren loved the birds the was any of the Inarta do, but he didn't want to control them. He just wanted to watch, to see them fly free in the forest. Instead Ayren inherited his father's curiousity and love of exploration. Ayren was quieter than Kimri. While Kimri was always part of a crowd, even when he was only a child, Ayren was always on the outskirts, more watching than participating.

Tormir left Wind Reach again when Ayren turned three, much to the small child's dismay. Also Tormir did was smile, promise to come back soon, and left. Althought Ayren was saddened, Kimri and Enira weren't. Enira had never grown overly attatched to Tormir, and Kimri had cared for Enira as Ayren had for Tormir. Soon though, smiles returned as Ayren's young mind quickly forgot about it. Ayren and Kimri continued playing as if nothing had happened, yet Ayren kept waiting for Tormir to return even if his family didn't.

Tormir returned as promised almost a year and a half later, right as the winter snows were beginning to melt. Ayren was overjoyed, and even Kimri was happy to see him. Tormir stayed for a brief six months before departing again. He spent most of that time with Ayren. He took the child to the outskirts of the city and showed him the trees and rivers, how the birds flew free, how the wind blew through a canyon. It was during that time that Ayren first felt what it was like to be out in the wilderness, and he was hooked.

During those months he had spent with Tormir, Enira had started to teach Kimri all about birds and falconry. Of course both boys had learned a little, but that's to be expected when living in the home of a falconer. Enira had never felt the need to push her children into learning something, that they would come to her if they wanted to learn. Yet when Tormir started to teach Ayren about the wilderness, she couldn't help but feel that she was being left behind so she started teaching Kimri. Kimri and Ayren still spent a lot of time together when they were both home. They were close friends, and confided much in each other. So when Tormir left again, Ayren was sad, but he had Kimri so he wouldn't feel alone.

Years followed that pattern. Tormir came and went periodically, but whenever he was around he spent most of his time with Ayren. With him Ayren explored his home and learned the basics of survival, also how to use a bow. Enira continued to teach Kimri falconry, and it was soon clear that he would grow up to be just as good as she was. Kimri and Ayren grew closer as they grew up. Kimri obviously led, but Ayren was happy to follow. Kimri showed Ayren his bird and how falconry worked. Ayren showed Kimri the wilderness and different places he had found.

It was was during the Winter of Ayren's seventh year that everything went wrong. As was the case with Inarta boys, Kimri had been engaging in all types of dares with his friends. Ayren was always there, but he stepped aside and lets Kimri participate instead. Ayren thought it was stupid to do something so dangerous just to prove you were the best. This day it had started with Ayren making a comment that he had been exploring and had climbed up a steep rock faceso he could survey the surroundings from the top. Then the boys had started to brag that they were the best rock climbers. Soon it was an all out dare: who could climb to the top of that hill the fastest? Ayren thought that it was too dangerous, but Kimri soon convinced him to show then the place so they could compete. The next day Ayren led them out to there, but it being winter the slope was icy. Ayren climbed up first to wait at the top so he could see who won, as the other boys lined up at the bottom. At Ayren's call they started to climb, the first boys had reached the top when a strong gust of wind came and bashed against the rock face. There were two boys still on the rock face, one held on. The other had been reaching for another hand hold and had lost his balance and fell to the ground, dying on impact. It had been Kimri.

Ayren fell apart with Kimri's death. He blamed himself partly. He felt that he should have more strongly opposed the dare, not shown them the hill, noticed the wind coming. Partly he blamed the other boys for making the dare. There was nothing the other boys could do to console him, and soon they just left him alone completely. Something broke inside of Enira too. For so long it had been that Ayren had been Tormir's child and Kimri had been hers. Now Kimri was gone. She tried to get through her grief by replacing Kimri with Ayren, but that was doomed to fail. Ayren and Kimri had been different, and she tried to train Ayren just as she had trained Kimri. Without the aptitude for falconry that Kimri had possessed, Ayren just couldn't please Enira in any of her lessons. The only thing that became of it was Ayren's estrangement from his mother.

When Ayren went to live in the youth part of the city come summer, it was a relief for him. She still wrote to him to tell him to continue working on his falconry, but he never replied. The letters just ended up in a box with his clothes, forgotten. Ayren, never one to join the crowd, didn't make many close friends. Tormir can to visit about two months after Ayren moved.

It was during that time with Tormir that Ayren moved on from Kimri's death. Tormir helped Ayren to stave off the sadness, and to try to remember only the good things about Kimri. Ayren still felt guilty about what had happened, but it wasn't as forward in his mind.

Tormir stayed for only three months before departing again. Before he left, he gave Ayren a gift, supposedly to celebrate his move into the youth part of the city. It was an old book, worn but sturdy, titled Basic Survival Techniques. Tormir said it was for Ayren to read when he was away, so that he continue learning, and so that he would never forget any of its important lessons.

It was later when Ayren went to read the book that a letter pressed between the pages fell out. The letter was from Tormir, saying he wasn't coming back, ever. The letter went on to say that the book had really been a parting gift, that it was for Ayren to remember him by and so that he knew Ayren would have the means to stay safe if he needed to.

To the surprise of everyone who knew him, Ayren took it well, better than Kimri's death. Ayren told those who later asked that he knew that Tormir had been going to leave and that Tormir would have wanted him to not dwell on it. Whether Ayren truly knew Tormir was going to leave wasn't known, but it brought about a positive change in his personality. He still often wandered the wilderness, but he also started to make an effort to make friends. He was never going to be the most social, but now Ayren had a close group of friends to be with. Still, his friends noticed that there were times when Ayren would disappear into the forest smiling and would return home serious, with spirits dampened, and they knew that even if he didn't show it there was some part of Ayren that grieved.

In classes Ayren excelled, especially in archery for he had practiced with Torrmir since he was young. No one was surprised when, at age twelve, Ayren was apprenticed to a hunter. It seemed to be a perfect fit for him. Ayren liked that he could be in the wilderness, and was proficient at using a bow. The only issue was Ayren wasn't good at actually killing the animals.

As Ayren grew out of his apprenticeship, he became more of a guide and teacher than a hunter. Deciding against becoming a true hunter, Ayren became a member of the Chiet. He spends his time now as a teacher of classes to the Yasi, namely archery and basic survival. Also when Wind Reach becomes accessible to travelers come Spring, he helps to guide travelers through the network of caverns making up the city and though surrounding areas safely. While still proclaiming citizenship to Wind Reach, and paying they're taxes, Ayren decided against actually living in the city, and rather camps outside the city. He spends most of his days in the city, but he still feels like a camp is a better home than a building. Ayren enjoys the freedom of a camp and the ability to move it whenever he feels like it. It gives him freedom to explore without having to worry about getting home, as he always carries it with him. At different times of the year he camps in different places, close to city away from the surface in winter and farther out during the summer.
