Character History
Born as the son of a commoner in Wind Reach, Devlin was immediately thrown into the Dek class once it was made painstakingly clear that he was suffering a form of mono paresis, where he could barely move his right leg, let alone walk with it. Like any other Dek, Devlin was constantly mistreated and starved while he tried to survive in the mount's harsh environment. His mother continued to care for him despite his disability, which is the only reason he managed to survive past being a toddler. He worked any job he could that didn't require his moving around too much, and lived past the abuse of the higher classes, sustaining a few scars in the process.
Sometime when Devlin was Eight, he was saved by a Human merchant, who noticed the child dying of blood loss after being stabbed in his paralyzed leg. The man swiftly brought the boy to the nearest healer, who helped nurse Devlin back to health in a few days. In that time, the man (named Hayden Parker) had taken it upon himself to find and inform his mother, who subtly suggested that the merchant take the boy if he cared for his safety, for he would die soon in this harsh land anyway. Hayden found this only too convenient, for he truly was too kindhearted to leave the child alone there. Immediately after Devlin's recovery, his mother told him that he would leave with Hayden, and sent him off with the merchant after they properly said goodbye to each other.
Growing up in Syliras was practically a miracle to Devlin, for he knew that the world was not welcoming of the weak in times such as these. Safe behind the strong walls of Syliras, this was a moment of peace of his life that he would not cease to be grateful of. Hayden, who was now a foster-father of sorts, lived alone with the boy and as a merchant, left the house often, never forgetting to leave Devlin enough food and money until he got back. He was very protective of the child, and claimed that he would not let the boy get a job in his state at least until he came of age. Devlin insisted on helping but the first portion of his childhood taught him to never disobey orders, so he listened. He spent his time getting to know the locals and slowly learning to speak common.
It was in this time that Devlin learned his love for music, and quickly took up the guitar. He also enjoyed learning history, mostly folklore and mythology. Hayden taught him to read, and he re-read many times the only book that the household owned, which was simple a very basic rendition of human history. Hayden also taught him how to write, which allowed Devlin to write down his music ideas. He enjoyed passing stories around in a group of people, which is where he learned to enjoy folklore. Once Devlin turned 16, Hayden finally let him go to the employment office to look for a job.
