(Flashback) Highwaymen (Eyrss)

While Sylira is by far the most civilized region of Mizahar, countless surprises and encounters await the traveler in its rural wilderness. Called the Wildlands, Syliran's wilderness is comprised of gradual rolling hills in the south that become deep wilderness in the north. Ruins abound throughout the wildlands, and only the well-marked roads are safe.

Cade the sunberth barbarian waited off the beaten path of Sylira's wilderness, a few miles west of the lawless city. His horse was tied up a hundred yards from his position as he waited in ambush on the side of the road hidden in the long grass with sword drawn and at the ready as his partner in crime sat in the middle of the path. Hopefully his sickly figure would hold up any form of victim long enough for Cade to get the upper hand in the initiative of ambush. Cade was many things; beggar, thief, reaver, warrior, but this day he was a highwayman, fuelled by his need to eat for its been days since they had a proper meal and many beasts in the Sylaras wilderness were not fawn of being the hunted as they specialised in being the hunters.

No, today Eyrss and Cade were looking for the easy route, ambush and rob any that fall for their trap. These lands were harsh and only the strong and witty survived and Cade was hoping he fit under those categories of survivor. The largely built man could hear the creaks of the wheels coming from up the path from the west. More then likely it was a merchant's wagon headed to sunberth. He would of signalled his smaller friend but he knew full well that Eryss would of heard the wagon, probably even before he did and would be expecting Cade to adjust position to prey upon the target.

Cade moved himself further up the path for he was set for traders coming from sunberth, not to. The new position only took moments to set up, and now he just waited for Eyrss to work his magic. The barbarian was ready to do what was needed for their own needs, even if that meant taking lives. That was life.

(Flashback) Highwaymen (Eyrss)

Postby Eryss Waldu on June 13th, 2011, 1:35 am

[Eryss was waiting on the road that lead away from Sunberth, he insisted on getting to the predestined location long ahead of the merchant’s wagon so that he could prepare, and now that he was alone he began to concentrate. It was easier here in the wilderness away from the noise and commotion of the cities, here Eryss could sink into a deep frame of thought without having to worry that he would be interrupted, his eyes closed and looking at him from a distance an observer might get the idea that the tattered man was oblivious to the world. Indeed it might well be so that Eryss had went inside himself to fan the flames of his own djed and summon it up through his veins into the physical world around him.]

[It would have been midday by now. The Sun was high in the air, only partially concealed by a small canopy of branches that came together from surrounding trees; it bore down over the wilderness reminding all who saw it of its vigilant gaze. Dropping his tattered cloak around his feet Eryss exposed the sickly figure beneath it, he wore a tunic and lowered the cloth that he usually covered his mouth with bellow his chin revealing his features, curiously the man was thin but not entirely as twisted as one might think him to be. Eryss was underweight and a little gangly looking, his fingers seemed as though they were too long for his hands and his face was scarred by what must have been a blow he received a long time ago but he was not a beast of a man. Of course perception is different amongst men, Eryss believed he was quite the misshapen oddity and attempting to prove him otherwise could occasionally stoke bouts of rage in the man.]

[Outstretching his left hand he turned it palm up so that he could watch as the djed he channelled through himself pooled there, it looked like water to him colorless but radiating of great power and potential, he stared at it briefly. Exuding the djed he finally pressed his hand against the tunic that he wore and willed it to flow across his form slowly, it answered by radiating out across the tunic and encompassing it like water that had rippled after a stone was dropped into it, and as such Eryss created a shield around himself. Well not himself, specifically this shield flowed over the tunic he wore and was tasked against bladed weapons rendering them unable to cut unless an abundance of pressure was able to break through the protective magic. Eryss didn’t intend to let himself be cut but it was always better to be safe rather than sorry later on.]

[Now that he had finished with his own preparations Eryss would bend down, retrieving the tattered cloak that he shrugged off himself and replacing it over his body, redressing himself he had disguised the shield he created over his tunic beneath another layer of clothing so that he would appear more unassuming. It wasn’t long before he heard the sounds of the wagon creaking in the distance denoting that the merchant would soon discover him and making haste he would kneel down, then go onto hands and knees, as though he were injured and crawling along the road. While he didn’t relish the idea of putting himself in danger Eryss recognized that one look at Cade, who was hiding himself somewhere off the road, would have alerted whoever saw him that something was not right.]

[When the Merchant’s Wagon finally came around the road it was manned by four men. The Merchant himself and three hired guards that rode with him. Eryss peering higher from where he remained on hands and knees would see this and curse a bit, he knew the Merchant wouldn’t have been alone but he was expecting fewer men to be travelling with him, muttering under his breath the wizened figure would cough a time or two as the wagon drew to a halt.

“Out of the way beggar! Clear the road!” was heard from one of the guards that had signalled for the wagon to stop but Eryss did not move. He needed to stall them so that Cade could reposition himself and attack. Quickly thinking he began to moan and move closer on his hands and knees before he heard the words “Stop there! No closer or we’ll run you through!” obviously these weren’t the trusting type but who could have blamed them in this wild land.

Coughing and moaning Eryss hadn’t said a word yet when he became aware of the men speaking again, “Look at his clothes he might be diseased!” one of them had said before another blurted out “Maybe. Lets kill him, a mercy if he is ailed that he will surely thank us for.” And then the Merchant himself who appeared to be a middle aged man “What are you idiots arguing about? Put your sword in him and roll him out of the way.”]

[Hearing everything Eryss had decided that waiting for Cade wouldn’t do and he began to summon his inner reserve of djed again. Manipulating it into res that he could shape to his desires and use to lash out away from himself. When he heard booted feet approaching Eryss had just about completed everything that he meant to and sitting up onto his knees he shouted...

“Kill them Cade! All of them!”

...subtlety had never been his strongest suit. His eyes seemed brilliantly more malevolent in that moment as well before he raised his hand and slammed it down against the earth. Using his res as both a channel and a conduit between earth and fire he infused his power into the land and let it travel through the earth towards the wagon where the merchant sat surrounded by his guards. Like a Geyser the earth beneath the wagon would erupt skywards in a hail of dirt and rock that overturned the wagon, tipping it sideways and splintering wood as it exploded upwards in a display that was intentionally vulgar and meant to inspire a stunned reaction. Debris was thrown in all directions and the guards likely scattered, the Merchant himself maybe incapacitated, but it didn’t matter at the moment as Eryss looked towards the man that had been approaching him, waiting for Cade to appear somewhere, and let his eyes crackle malevolently with obvious murderous intent. Death had come to this road.]

(Flashback) Highwaymen (Eyrss)

Postby Cade on June 14th, 2011, 6:28 pm

Cade's reaction was only stalled by mere amazement of Eyrss's power for the sickly creature made short work of the wagon. He snapped out of it as his friend yelled his name and with blood boiled, lusting for battle the savage leaped from his hiding with longsword raised high. His roar was beastly as he thrusted himself forward, preying upon the closest guardsmen. The stunned man was just to his knees with no chance in hell to defend himself as the half blood Myrian dropped the longsword with his full strength upon him. The sickly sound of a butchers tool impacting on meat echoed through the forest as the longsword cleaved through the guards left shoulder and almost cutting the man in half to only stop at his lower right rib.

Cade's myrian voice thundered through the air as he barked in victory while kicking the dead man free from his blade, his nostrils filled with the familiar scent of defecation. There are many stories of battle and honourable kills, but non of them ever tell you the truth, the sickening noise a blade makes and the smells of dead mans last shit are what waits for those seeking death by the sword. Tho the noise, the smells were a welcomed experience for Cade for he enjoyed it all. He was at home swinging his sword into another's body and watching the life be robbed from the victim as he continues on to his next.

The savage's gloating was ended quick as a guardsmen advanced upon him, hell bent for revenge with a thirst for Cade's blood. A Challenge. Was all Cade could think of as his savage barks were silenced for a mere sadistic smile while he concentrated on this willing foe. Cade bladed himself into the fools position, his longsword in a low guard as he waited for the man's attack which sailed from a high wing. Cade with both hands on the hilt quickly snapped his own wrists to the right forcing his blade to parry the oncoming sword down to his right side. While still in one fluent motion he thrusted his body forward and bringing his longsword up in a slight angle that slashed his enemies' throat wide open. Bards told amazing stories of heroes clashing blades which seemed for eternity before one would fall. Again, those were not truths of real battle, for duel should be ended in seconds.

Cade's second victim fell to the ground grasping his throat as blood rushed from the fresh opening the savage created. The honourable thing to do would be to give the man a quick death and end his suffering......Cade was not such a man. No instead he would let the man bleed out to witness the murderer of his fellow friends.

Cade with his sword soaked in blood pointed at his next victim, a young boy who seemed to be an apprentice to this kind of work. "COME PUP! COME TO MY BLADE" The savage taunted as he moved forward to the youngling.

(Flashback) Highwaymen (Eyrss)

Postby Eryss Waldu on June 15th, 2011, 7:45 pm

[Before Cade had appeared and began cutting down the Guardsmen as they recovered Eryss, still resting himself after expending an assortment of his power, was beginning to focus on the men as they recuperated from his attack. His eyes were glowing with a malevolent light as the djed he had channelled throughout his body in the initial attack continued to burn itself off slowly. Eryss wanted to be careful as mastery of the elements was no simple thing and one wrong move could leave him badly debilitated, even disfigured, if the res he transformed djed into turned back onto him. While Cade attacked the Guardsmen Eryss was happy to watch, taking his time, before acting again.]

[Besides the indescribable carnage wrought by the wagon having been destroyed due the explosion blast erupting underneath it there was the immediate sense of terror, true horror even, that had descend over the area. Eryss was watching as Cade cut through the first Guardsman before he was back on his feet, it had actually been the same man that had been approaching him when all this began, he saw his blood explode free of the fleshy torso that contained it all, heard the cracking of bone beneath the steel of a sword and it made him smile. Were this not a battle Eryss may have approached the dying man, knelt over him, and if he had any life left in him at all asked what it felt like to be numb and to know life was slipping away. Nothingness all that would await the dead Guardsman Eryss would have assured him.]

[When Cade was attacked by the other Guardsman Eryss had time to go about his own business though, the battle was clearly in Cades favour, and while his associate was in the midst of combat Eryss wandered closer to the remains of the cart. The Merchants Wagon hadn’t been completely destroyed but the blast firing up underneath it had blown a hole through its center, sending wood and goods scattering as debris, and thrown it onto its side where it remained now. The Merchant himself was thrown off the wagon and was laying prone on the ground, face down in a pile of grass, and Eryss, seeing him, approached the body of the merchant.]

[Behind him, in the near distance, Cade was finishing off the second Guardsmen as Eryss moved ahead.]

[Nearing the body of the Merchant Eryss, wanting to see the look of despair in the mans eyes, reached out to take his shoulder and pull him around. It wasn’t meant to be though. As the Merchant was pulled around his arm flung high and Eryss caught a face full of dirt that caused him to stumble backwards. Cursing as he went Eryss clawed his lengthy fingers across his eyes to clear them just in time to see the Merchant, a man of average years with a potbelly but not incredibly overweight, throwing a punch at him. Dodging, Eryss who knew better then to stand still but wasn’t exceptionally apt in a brawl tried to get out of the way but still ended up getting clipped in the side of the mouth. The blow threw him onto his back and he muttered.]

[Landing on his back with an aching jaw Eryss didn’t have much time before the Merchant was ontop of him, his hands taking Eryss around the throat, and lifting his hands he tried to push his assailant off to no avail. Eryss wasn’t a weakling but he wasn’t exceptionally apt at any physical labours either which was why placing his hands on the Merchants face and pushing backwards did little to help him.]

“Caaaaadddddeeeeee. Gr...Grreee....!@^!!*&^”

[Or so it went as Eryss tried to call for help from Cade while he was facing the youth only to have his voice cut short by the hands wrapped around his neck.]

[It was while he pushed his hands against the Merchants face, drawing one of them back to scratch and claw at him a bit, that Eryss began to exude the res from himself. Creating a small amount via the djed he harnessed until it covered his palm like a film. Shaping that res Eryss let it flow around his fingers until it covered his hand entirely as though he had just dunked it in water and removed it, soaking, from being immersed.]

[Igniting the res then Eryss transformed his palm into a blazing wreath of flame that he swung back and pressed against the Merchants face again. Listening as an agonizing howl spewed from the Merchant’s mouth Eryss used his hands to try and hold the man over him now instead of pushing him away. Burning the Merchants face Eryss held him as long as possible letting his flesh blister beneath his touch before the man was finally able to pull away.]

[Screaming the Merchant leapt from Eryss clutching his face started to run before collapsing onto the ground, hands still over his face where the fire had burnt away at his flesh, blistering it and leaving him debilitated. Eryss did not escape completely unscathed either though, igniting the res across his hand had caused it to turn back on him somewhat, and rolling onto his stomach Eryss buried his hand into the dirt and grass to keep himself from being burnt by his own fires to badly. Extinguishing the flames before he suffered overly.]

[By the time Eryss had looked up, crawling onto his knees at the same time, his eyes had begun to darken again this time with anger as much as a malicious hate. Feeding off the angst he experienced at the moment Eryss allowed the desire to destroy begin to overwhelm him, slowly like a poison eating away at him from the inside, and pushing to his knees he called out...

“Insolent worm! I’ll burn the eyes out of your head!”

...it was more than just a mere threat from Eryss who was now climbing back onto his feet, his tattered attire hanging off of him, and closing his fist into a ball he was to become a baleful force to be reckoned with that knew no limits nor morality.]

(Flashback) Highwaymen (Eyrss)

Postby Cade on June 18th, 2011, 8:38 am

Cade could hear Eyrss’s call for aid as he moved step by step closer to the pup that stood before him. The boy was fear struck, violently vibrating to the point one could hear the repetitive clinks come from within his armour. The boy was not ready for death and not being prepared for such calling made him ill prepared to fight a man such as Cade. Every time Cade drew his blade, he was ready to die...... didn’t mean he was going to make it easy for death to take him, it just made Cade more fearsome to his enemies. His mother taught him the warriors way and the first step in being a true functional combatant was to accept death and get on with it.

Another step forward and the boy visibly soiled himself, then dropping his sword to run. The youngling ran as fast as he could, even with Cade not giving chase. The Savage watched him rush up the trail the way they came from, a sadistic deep laughter echoed through the forest after him adding that much more insult to injury. Cade hope the child would survive the wilderness for he thought it best that someone would bar witness to his doings then exaggerate the story to make such a man a legend. Cade new image was a powerful tool, especially in this choice of lifestyle.

Cade then moved past the broken horses that lay lamed on their sides as the barbarian made his way towards Eyrss and his quarry. Eryss had powers that Cade could not fathom to harness and it was no disrespect to his friend’s skills when he stepped up from behind the merchant, penetrating his blade through the man’s torso. Again, Cade bared witness to another man releasing his bowls, a sign of pending death tho the merchant was still alive as Cade unsheathed his blade from the man’s chest cavity.

“Stop playing around Eryss, we have work to do” He jousted at his old friend before turning away from both, the dying merchant and the dark critter he befriended many seasons ago.

(Flashback) Highwaymen (Eyrss)

Postby Eryss Waldu on June 18th, 2011, 3:38 pm

[It was with a small bit of angst that Eryss watched as Cade, quite suddenly, appeared behind the Merchant and delivered a fatal stroke with his blade; he had been climbing to his feet ready to immolate the merchant but now it all seemed so pointless to him. After all a cleansing fire would surely hasten the man’s death and a voice in the back of Eryss mind told him that he wanted the man to suffer, he wanted to leave him there squirming in his own blood, bowels and excrement for the last moments of his life. Walking over to the merchant as he lay dying Eryss would stand beside him and watch as his life continued to slip away, it would only be moments now.]

[When Cade spoke, telling him to hurry up as there was work to be done, Eryss looked away from the body of the merchant and surveyed the area from beneath his cowls. Eyes grew narrow as he surveyed the carnage, taking a mental tally of the bodies he’d seen and counting only three which meant one was missing, he was shaking his head then as he had a decent idea what had occurred before commenting...

“You should have killed the last Guard. Don’t be so concerned with your legend that you forget subtlety in the face of deeds is sometimes best.”

...he made an idle wave of the hand then before moving around the merchant, who had since died of his wounds, and towards the overturned wagon. Eryss was confident the wilderness had a good chance of killing the youth if he wandered too far in his panic. It was never a wise idea to wander away from well travelled roads unless you were accustomed to surviving in the wilderness and dealing with its dangers but then terror made men do things they otherwise wouldn’t.]

[At the wagon Eryss began sifting through the goods that he discovered, there were supplies that he had no interest in and an assortment of trade goods but nothing overly spectacular, clearly he was looking for coin or something else that could be considered useful. This was just one wagon, not even part of a larger caravan or else Cade and he wouldn’t have attacked, the odds that it was rich were extremely slim as were the chances it was carrying anything of sufficient interest. These weren’t rich men after all and from the look of these Guards and how easily Cade had cut through them they were all amateurs, probably working for enough coin to feed themselves almost the same as them. Only an assumption but clearly one that could have been accurate.]

[Digging through the goods Eryss opened a chest that had been turned onto its side only to scrunch his nose beneath the cowl he wore, it was full of clothing or what looked like it, and with an indignant he shoved it aside and away onto the road. Looting what remained of the wagons cargo for some time more Eryss would eventually relinquish a triumphant cackle when he came upon a small leather pouch that had been laced together, unlacing the binds that held the pouch together Eryss would hear the sound of coin jingling inside, with it in his clutches he moved away from the wagon. If Cade was interested in anything else he could have it, Eryss only wanted his share of the coin.]

[Dumping the contents of the pouch onto the ground Eryss would fan through the coins with his palm, counting them as he went, before looking back over his shoulder to say...

“We have forty gold miza here. Not bad work. Perhaps next time a richer looking merchant though.”

...then gathering half, which was an even share, Eryss would place twenty of the miza back into the pouch before secreting it away inside the cloak that he covered himself with. Leaving the other twenty on the ground for Cade to collect while he moved off. His mind was now shifting to one that dealt with damage control. Indeed it seemed better to Eryss that the Merchant and the dead guards be more difficult to find, maybe if the youth that had escaped returned with others they would think him in hysterics. Of course this was Sunberth so it was just as likely no one would care that this man and his hirelings were dead.]

“Take what you want off the bodies. Quickly.”

...after Eryss had said that he moved towards the merchant. Walking closer the body barely had time to cool before Eryss knelt down and channelled his control of the element of earth through his body once more. In a way he likened it to communing with the elements when he called upon them to complete a task for him. Occasionally, as with fire, Eryss had to create an element but other times it was merely a matter of having one such thing do his bidding for him. Laying his hand over the ground Eryss would concentrate momentarily before the earth beneath the merchants body slowly began to separate, parting as though it were opening itself up, and then began to swallow the corpse until nothing remained but the damp ground where the man had fallen. After it had taken the body into itself the earth resealed and there was nothing left to see, unless a man wanted to dig several feet down to rediscovered the body that had been swallowed.]

[Allowing Cade time to loot the two Guards he’d killed Eryss would complete the procedure on them as well, leaving no trace that the bodies were there except for the damp ground where their blood had been spilled.]

[As for the wagon Eryss had no interest in burning it or the horses that had been pulling it. If Cade wanted some sign that something had happened here to remain then the wagon served as the perfect landmark towards that endeavour. Once Cade had finished taking what he wanted he would hear Eryss saying...

“Back to Sunberth? You can bury yourself in women and drink while we plot our next target.”

...then he was wandering off into the near distance so that he could find his horse and ride back to the city, on the way as the euphoria of the kill started to wear off he would feel the throbbing pain in his hand where it’d been burnt and scowl briefly. Ripping off a piece of his cloak Eryss would wrap it around his palm so as to create a make shift bandage, the rest could wait until he was back in Sunberth.]

(Flashback) Highwaymen (Eyrss)

Postby Cade on June 20th, 2011, 5:53 am

The barbarian nodded in agreement to Eyrss's directions. Cade moved forward to the second man he felled, looting the mans body of all that was worth before straightening himself from where the dead man laid. Cade extended the right arm of the man and with one quick swipe, he chopped it free from just below the elbow. The savage tied the bloody limb to his leather bandolier, letting it dangle over his right shoulder from the wrist. He mimicked the same actions to the first guard he killed, collecting all that was of worth and then collecting his right arm- tying it with the other. Later when they had time Cade would cook the arms and eat them, as a ritual to the people he has killed. He would keep their index finger as a trophy, placed upon his necklace that had many trinkets of past kills.

The half blood myrian made his way towards Eryss, two swords strapped over his left shoulder with the arms that wielded them opposite of their position on the Barbarian's back along with the rest of the loot he could muster. Cade was a happy man, blood was spilt by his own sword and he was still standing to collect the spoils of battle. This is what he lived for and will continue to live at it tell he meets a man or creature that will end it, he hoped. He wished not to die as an elder, defecating himself because he was two weak to take care of business. No that was not a death Cade sought for. But Cade wished not to meet death at such a young age, for there was still lots Mizahar had to offer a barbarian and he planned to take it all.

"Well Friend......Shall we go raid the taverns for tasty liquids and beautiful whores?" Cades deep voice thundered off into a distinct chuckle of success. They two of them collected their horses, loaded them up with the loot of the day and trailed off towards Sunberth to celebrate. All in a days work for highwaymen.

Magical Note, the earth use from things might have been a little over the top for your skill level :) Spike forest is listed as expert . But since you didn’t add another element to the effect and only moving a single pillar and spike of earth I think it would *barely* pass muster for the skill level (though probably working up towards* spike forest would better developed in the 38-50 area.

(*coughs* *hint*hint*wink*wink*nudge*nudge.) ;)

I wasn't sure if this would bring a bit of minor overgiving of headaches, dizziness, and naseua for a few days, but then after looking at a few other threads with reimancers around your levels, and how you actually used shielding in her to not block against physical attacks I decided against it.

Would you like some extra turtle sauce ? :
Well I looked at it and gave you what I could. I didn’t grant more on the reimancy or the longsword being that you guys are competent already. I’d like to read more in the future, as this really felt as only part of little larger story. :) (*Psstt… length issues :) even with eryss’ long posts :). Anyways, any questions or concerns please feel free to pm me. :)
Thank you all for the privildege of moderating, unfortunately with deaths in the family and ailing health I am retiring. All thread grades I had on my pc have been forwarded to founders and paragon, so expect them posted soon.
It's been a mixed bag at times , but with all the good and the bad and mixed signals, I can honestly say: Thank you. Please support the next mods of sunberth as well as you have done me.
