[Flashback] The first card of the deck.

22nd day of Winter 501 AV

Bob has been reading the book for nearly a year now, practicing the skills in it alone at home and now its time to get to using it. He asked himself where would be the best place to try it not? Obviously he needed to test on people who were not too bright or they'll catch on to his little tricks so that practically cancels out most of the people in Zeltiva. "Hmmm, maybe the docks then if I am avoiding the smart people?" he thought to himself as he put the book away and went out the door.

Getting out of his room, who did Bob see but his dear old uncle Marny. Marny asked "Have you finished studying yet Bob? You know you won't get into the University if you keep fooling around." Bob panicked a little hearing this. Sure he has been "studying" but not really what his uncle wanted him to. Uncle Marny was a doctor in Zeltiva and it was no big secret that he wanted Bob to follow in his footsteps and take over the practice instead of becoming like that worthless father of his which took his beloved sister to the grave just because of those gambling debts. Bob answered "Sure Uncle Marny...I have been preparing well for my future..." eyes looking away from his Uncle Marny and displaying his usual smile as he said that.

Thank the gods that eventhough Uncle Marny was smart, but not smart enough to pick up on Bob's lie right there and then. So smiling he replied "That's good then Bob. How about you help me today with my work and we can see how much you have prepared yourself?" as he took Bob by the shoulder to his workshop. Bob groaned in disappointment as his uncle grasped his shoulder because everytime his uncle got him to help, it could take all day and today especially of all days Bob did not want to have to go through it. No all Bob wanted to do then was finally try out what he has been learning so that he would know if he is truly worthy of the name Barton.

By the time the setting sun was drawing its red curtain over Zeltiva, Bob was finally done with helping his uncle. He massaged his shoulders and wrists a little and moaned to himself "Why can't Uncle Marny go and buy his own medicine from other people like the normal doctors instead of making his own?" While saying that he knew in his heart that it was that personal touch that made people prefer to come to his uncle when they are sick, a fact Bob loves and appreciates about his uncle as well. But Bob never wanted to be a doctor so he never really paid attention to his uncle attempts to teach him about medicine, herbs and philtering. Bob wanted to become a great gambler like all the Bartons before him except that loser father of his. The only lesson which ever stuck to him from his uncle was the math for measuring the reagents and that was the only way Bob every could help his uncle anyway. Uncle Marny would go "Here, make sure you cut out enough of this for 3 people" or "Fill this beaker up to 1.42 liters" and Bob would reply "Is that for 3 big people or small people?" and "Does the liquid need to be concentrated or dilute?"

So in the evening where everyone was returning home to turn in for the night, Bob went out of the house and headed towards the docks. The aspiring gambler out for a night of fun where other people who are definitely a lot smarter than him, this being most of the other people in Zeltiva like Uncle Marny would normally with a sound mind do their best to keep away from. I think at this point we can establish that Bob is not like the other normal people. Bob got bored with the normal life a looooonnnggggg time ago.

[Flashback] The first card of the deck.

Postby Bob Barton on July 6th, 2011, 4:03 pm

Bob reached the dock with all the sailors, the wanderers, the adventurers and all the other types. Although it was night, the hustle and bustle of the docks throughout the day still remained. Stevedores, deckhands and sailors going back and forth moving and loading ships and crates, some tripping over one another while working, some getting into brawls right on the streets themselves for the stupidest of reasons. Bob took in the atmosphere with a deep breath, psyching himself up "Well, I guess its now or never to see if I have what it takes to be a Barton" and started walking down the streets looking. What was he looking for exactly? He had no idea himself but he knew that once he has seen it, he'd know.

As he was walking down the streets of the Zeltiva Docks, Bob's head was going from left to right. He knew he definitely should not be out at this hour in a place like this. A 16 year old at the docks at night. Really? Even the other people, the less savory types of the dock started looking at Bob funny as he walked by. Eyes looking all over him like a predator sizing up a prey, soft whispers of plots and plans to do "things" to him, motions and gestures which would be scary to even the most hardened of badasses and all Bob could do against them is smile nervously at while trying his best to hide his shaking legs.

The minutes walking along the dock felt like hours. Hours which anyone feeling the full pressure of dread and threat would. The nervous smile finally turned into a joyful one taking up half of Bob's face when he finally found "it". A group of sailors playing cards behind some crates of a half loaded ship. By the sound of all the excited cheering and elated exclaimations, Bob knew he hit the jackpot even before he begun. Don't call him superstitious or overly religious, but Bob took this as a sign that this is his calling in life. As the book said in #37 "an emotional mark, is an easy mark. They are easily manipulated and blind to everything else but the game" and poor Bob didn't even know that this can also apply to him.

Bob stood staring at the group for a little longer. Studying them, watching out for their tell signs and gambling habits which would help him before approaching the group as instructed by #54 of the book. When he judged it was enough, he straightened his back, puffed out his chest and walked towards them like he was just like them. Just another player. Only a few members of the group noticed him, mostly choosing to ignore him and turning back their attention to the game. One man however, a large mass of tattooed muscle went towards Bob and asked with his gruff voice "What do you want fish? Go back to mommy before we decide to cook you!" Bob backed away with a step and a gulp at the man's threat. Then he stepped back up again as though defying the man, remembering why he came to the docks in the first place and answered feebly "I...I...I here to play...and uhhh...maybe catch a few fish stories?"

The large man paused for a few moments with a blank expression. Was he surprised with Bob's reaction? Probably, but in a good way because the awkward silence was broken between them with the man's jovial laugh. "Hahaha! You're a funny boy you know? I like that." He put his arm around Bob's shoulders and brought him to the group and introducing him "Alright boys and not boys, this here is Fish and looks like he is joining us tonight." The man must have been the ringleader of the group because as he stared one by one at each of the members they seem to be caving into his demand. Bob saw this and waited for their approval .The whole group finally broke out in a cheer about fresh fish or something like that.

So the night began for Bob. One night of the many he'd have and Bob definitely enjoyed it, deciding there and then that gambling something he would be spending the rest of his life doing. The sailors were a crowd very much unlike most of those boring stiffs in Zeltiva he had known all his life. More fun...and happy. All throughout sharing stories of perilous voyages at the sea, hunting the dangerous sea monsters and tales about all the new sights at docks scattered all over the world feeding more of Bob's excitement and desire for the romance of adventure all impressionable boys his age have. Sure he might have lost a sum of coin from breaking #37 a mistake all rookies make but he was able to keep the margin as low as possible by counting cards as one of the techniques in the book by eliminating the cards already played and trying to predict the probabilities of the next ones "Hmmmm, those cards have already been played...so the next biggest card would be this and I have it in my hand...Time for a big bet." And luckily for him, none of the others caught on. But to Bob, the sum was probably considered as capital or entry fee into the field. After all, he finally got the courage he needed to take the risks in gambling, met a number of interesting characters and got a few stories didn't he? And Uncle Marny was none the wiser about his little adventure when he got home the next morning.
