So the focus does not need to be a circle. Interesting, at least now the glyphs he would make won't be so plain and boring. If he is going to be a gambler who lives an exciting life, his works must also portray the same. No one would listen to his stories otherwise. But this things about glyphs...they seem so standard. If it was going to be this simple then its easy for Bob to find out as well. He had to confirm this. "So...as long as the focus which can be represented by anything is surrounded by something else its a glyph? That seems a little dangerous since everyone would know what it is then."

Bob tried again this time drawing a rough image of a dice. It was hard to draw on the bumpy ground even with a chalk so he settled for a square dice instead of a cubed one eventhough the lines were a bit wobbly. After that, he drew the suits of a deck of cards around it again. He took some time to think...he wanted to write something more interesting than a direct admission of magic. In the end he chose "With the mention of luck, there comes power" If it works, he might be able to pass off his glyphs as a symbol for something else.

[Flashback] Magic, gods style! (Clyde)

Looking over, he saw the new attempt. He was getting closer, but was still not there.

"Well not quite. A glyph is a single symbol, which yes differs in appearance from person to person. A sigil is a small collection of glyphs to perform a specific task, which will usually include common elements, such as a focus, a barrier, and a trigger. A focus is a single large glyph, which can store magic and draws magic to that one point."

"A barrier holds back magic, and is a series of glyphs, which stops it from getting away. So while you can wrap a barrier around a focus to keep the magic in, you could also just say draw a barrier around you to keep magic away. Though this is a more high level thing. But an master glypher could even say keep an actual magic attack away."

"Then you have the trigger, which is separate. It is only used on something like a scroll, which would be used to release the magic sealed within. And next to the trigger glyph, you would write out the means by which to activate the trigger. This could be several things, and the better you get the more complex and or specific the trigger thing can be. At your level it would most likely be best to keep it to being triggered by a phrase or a few words. Though you will not be making scrolls and such things until you get much better."

"While your glyphing can be very different, and used in unique ways, its basic building blocks are the same, and thus recognizable by a fellow glypher. But you can do almost anything with it, as long as you have the skill and imagination to do so. Also that was just one example, you can use just one part, or you can use several. You could use just a focus, or just a barrier. It all depends on what you are trying to do."

looking over, Clyde directed him to try again. After this last explanation, he hoped he understood it. If needed he would repeat a part of what he last said, if he did not get something.

"Okay, now i want you to try something simple. Take the chalk and draw a focus on the palms of your hands. Then I want you to direct and generate res out of the focus there on your palms. They should help you to bring res to that point, and to generate djed there, making it a bit easier and faster to use reimancy from there. This is a very common application."

I am actually in RL a super intelligent hamster from Rhode Island, with a 7 year plan to take over the world.

Update 6/2/18- 1:10AM EST: His 7 year plan a success, and several weeks ahead of schedule, Clyde leaves to oversee the world he has taken over.

No new threads after end of Spring 518-Will still be checking for PM's occasionally, but focusing on a new character.

Graders note: :
Please be aware Clyde is a master Magecrafter. He therefore should not be gaining full xp(or possibly shouldn't gain any at all) for simple tasks related to this magic, such as low level MC items, particularly for repetitions of creations he has done before. Feel free to contact me if unsure of a instance of his magic use compared to his skill level.

Clyde kept repeating the same thing over and over again. Its not that Bob could not get the idea, but its just that the explanations were a bit too complicated. Didn't really matter to him because he just figured he'd keep drawing these glyphs until he got it right. "Practice makes perfect!" he said out loud.

So he only needed to draw a focus on his hands? Bob repeated "A focus...is the thing which is supposed to be surrounded by the other things..." and drew a circle on his palm. Then he focused some of his res again as he always did on to his palms. The boy was right, it is becoming a bit faster and easier to do it as the res was really forming up on the spot. The colourless gel soon became thicker and thicker on his palm and Bob chuckled a little thinking that this is really going to make things a whole easier.

Looking over, Clyde let out a sigh... Bob was having a bit of trouble... and was getting close but not quite right on the facts....

"Well, once more that is better, but it does not have to be surrounded, it can also be used alone. And it is not a circle... A focus is a single large glyph you draw. But you are getting better, and you have seen that glyphing can help your other types of magic out. I think you have most of it down though."

Watching, he saw Bob working on his glyphs. Taking out his own chalk, he started drawing one himself. Finishing off his sigils from before, he prepared it to be used. Perhaps he could show another demonstration of live use of glyphing? He quietly prepared his res to do a bit more magic.

"Do you have any other questions? Or would you like to see another live demonstration of its uses?"

Bob was still thinking about the applications he can use this newfound technique on. His mind looking at all the angles, he forgot that Clyde was still teaching him. Hearing the question, Bob instinctively answered "No...yes..." and went over to his bag to find his tools.

He fished out his tools, the dice and cup he used on his first meeting with Clyde. Then he tried to get rid of the res in his hand. A hard job because the cold air made gel res stick on his hand more so he had to focus to make it move down and drop. The chalk mark he used for the focus was smudged from the gel so he had to try again, drawing another circle on his palm. This time he made the circle as big as possible, covering the whole surface of the palm and put the dice on it. Then Bob sat down in front of one of the rocks which worked for him as a table and asked Clyde "Remember this?"

Looking at Bob, he saw him sit and start playing with his dice. At heart he was a gambler, which showed in his glyphing.

"Dont forget, you can take back in your res you dont use, you dont have to get rid of it. However be careful, because you will never get it all back, even if you do so. Some will be lost in the transaction back to djed. Yes I do remember that, I hope you are now a bit more discreet with your magic!"

Smiling he sat across from him, looking over once more at there fire, which was no longer roaring. It was slowly dying, and if they did not add some wood soon, it would do so. But they would not be out here much longer, and soon they would be safe and relatively warm inside of the castle.

Thinking things over, he was pretty sure he had explained glyphing as well as he could. Bob understood the basics, and knew enough to know do it on his own. He might never be a master glypher, but it could certainly be used at a low level to help enhance his reimancy. And his reimancy was developing to, he was much better at it than when they first met. Then he had no idea what he was doing, or how to properly use his magics.

"Yes, it is nice to remember, though it was only a few weeks ago. You have been developing quite nicely since then. Your magics are much better, and who knows how good you could get through some more practice? Is there something you want to show me with your dice?"

[Flashback] Magic, gods style! (Clyde)

Postby Bob Barton on July 13th, 2011, 6:03 am

Bob started his performance again for Clyde with everything on the rock table. He picked up the dice and held it on his palm for a few seconds for Clyde while the res slowly started building up at the base of the dice to see before closing it and putting it all over the rest. It was good, better even than the last time he has done it. The glyphing on his palm made the res build up more focused and faster.

Then he juggled the dice a little in front of Clyde to make sure the res was everywhere he wanted it to be. This time he did his best to make sure it won't gleam so that Clyde might catch on by talking some more to make sure Clyde's eyes were trained on his face. Then he tossed the dice into the cup on his other hand making it fly across his chest and the cup rattled. Shaking it a little bit more Bob slammed the cup on the rock again. Then he started talking to give the dice enough time to roll to the number he wants, "I am saying a three will pop out. What do you think?" Bob knew that whatever number Clyde said won't make a difference since it would be a three because of his reimancy and that Clyde would know that too. Still he had to keep up the act since he is practicing on Clyde as another audience memeber. After Clyde said his number Bob lifted the cup and said "Awwww...you got it wrong, better luck next time" and held out his palm as though he was expecting some payment eventhough he knew Clyde won't give him anything. The lessons from a god should be good enough for him anyway.

It is very good because Bob did not have to waste his res either. Cylde's last lesson for the day was that he can reclaim back his res? Interesting, he would be able to use this trick more times a day before wearing himself out from now on. Bob picked up the dice and tried to reabsorb the res. He felt the power seeping into his skin and returning into him. To test whether what Clyde said was true, that he could not take it all back he transmuted the balance into water and it dripped from the dice unto the snow.

"Sooooo the next lesson, we can't be meeting here all the time. It will make it easier for us to get caught and we can't have the Knights killing you Master Clyde. How about coming to my camp the next time you feel like giving me a lesson?" Bob drew up a map for Clyde to see where his camp is. It started from the main gate, a badly drawn rectangle with lines sticking from it to a certain spot at the Cobalt Mountains with a picture of camel humps. After Clyde had memorized it, he would rub it off so no one else could find it.
