A city floating in the center of a lake, Ravok is a place of dark beauty, romance and culture. Behind it all though is the presence of Rhysol, God of Evil and Betrayal. The city is controlled by The Black Sun, a religious organization devoted to Rhysol. [Lore]

40th Day of Spring, 511 A.V.

Keating stepped into Ravok’s Center of Employment Office. His dark eyes took in the room quickly, and settled upon the administrator’s desk. The man did not want to be here. Hells! He didn’t even want to be in Ravok at all! But Rose refused to leave, and Cassandra was here too. If he was to stay, even a short while, he needed a job.

The man was old enough to know how the world worked, with its red tape and regulations. Life had been much simpler on the farm. Bala! Why did he ever leave? Keating though was morbidly resigned to his fate and to Ravok for now. These folks had the upper hand in his search for work, and he refused to even bother pretending he had any power here. If he had owned a hat it would have been in his hand, as he humbly rumbled in his low voice to the administrator at the desk, “Excuse me…, but I’m here to apply for a job.”

His large, calloused hands were folded in front of him, he waited patiently. Keating knew he was a simple man, not learned or smart. And he also knew he was nothing to these people. There was no help for it. And he added, “Anything really… I’m a hard worker. I’d hoped for something on the docks or in a warehouse… though I’ve worked in alehouses before too.” He failed to mention his farming background, as it didn’t seem Ravok had much in the way of farmland.

Postby Irriari on August 1st, 2011, 9:57 pm

30th of Summer, 511 AV
Irriari walked into the Center for Employment and Business Liscensing with her head held high. It didn't matter that she was a head shorter than everyone else. She would make it work. A ravosala had taken her from the docks to the heart of the city, near the Vitrax. The imposing building welcomed all who sought jobs with towering arches and a feeling that Irriari couldn't quite place. Here, she felt small.

Irriari had resided in Ravok for nearly a month now, and though she enjoyed not working, her miza purse was declining, and she knew that she would have to make more somehow. Busking on the street hardly seemed like a viable option, so she found herself amid a crowd of humans, all of whom were searching for a job. A few were turned away, and they stomped away from the desks, cursing every god they could think of, save for one. After 15 chimes, Irriari was next in line, and gazed at the man who would be helping her. He was all together unremarkable, as most humans were. The human he had helped didn't seem terribly distraught, but his smile was far from joyous. Irriari was almost sure that he had gotten a job, but it probably wasn't the one he wanted.

It wasn't her concern anyways. Irriari stepped up to the desk and sat awkwardly in the chair provided. Zith couldn't navigate chairs as well as many of the other races, so when Irriari was forced to, she simply squatted at the edge of the chair and tried to ignore the aching pain that shot up her calves.

“I'm here to apply for a job as a poisoncrafter. I would like to think I'm competent at it, and so far, I haven't been kicked out the Black Tar. For the most part, I gather my own materials in the wild, or I buy them in Ravok.”

Irriari tried to gauge the mans reaction, and found no overt clues, so she continued speaking.

“I don't require a business license. I make all my poisons in the wild or where ever I am at the time. I don't particularly care who I sell to, as long as they aren't enemies of The Black Sun.”

The last part was especially true. If caught selling to the Black Sun's enemies, even if she didn't know she was doing so, Irriari knew that her best made poisons could be used against her. And that was if the Ebonstryfe was feeling playful. If not, her death would come much quicker.

Keating Ash

The administrator at the desk stared at Keating thoughtfully, chewin on the end of his quill, before reaching into a drawer behind the desk and pulling out a slip of paper. "Please fill out your name, race, and any skills you might have that could be of use. You can write, I assume?" While Keating filled out his information the administrator leaned back in his chair, still chewing on the end of his quill. There were others on the desk for Keating to use, so the man did not offer his own.

"If simple is what you're looking for, we are in need of laborers down at the docks. Easy enough job. You'd be loading and unloading caravans onto boats and possibly driving them to and from the city. Pay isn't the best, though if you work hard in a season or two you might be promoted to a supervisor. Does this interest you, or were you looking for something a bit more challenging?"

OOCSo.. Laborer pays 7sm/day, which is 63.7gm/season, but since you would start on the 40th you would only get 35.7gm for spring. Unless you want a different job.

Irriari

The unremarkable man behind the desk most certainly didn't find his newest interviewee unremarkable. Far from it in fact, considering he had never before seen a Zith. "Uh.. you uh? Want to make poisons? I didn't know Zith.. er, well. Ahem... Yes, of course you do. I think we can help you with that." The man eyed her wings and claws warily before reaching into his desk and pulling out a small form. "I just.. I need some information. Do you.. can you write?" When Irriari informed him she could not the human took back the paper and read it to her, writing down her answers as they went. "Name. Race. Age. How long do you plan to work in Ravok? Any relevant skills?"

Once all the boring information was filled out the man filed the paper away and pulled out a different, older looking parchment. "Ahem.. the Ebonstryfe and the Black Sun do take on private clients from time to time. The Black Tar is of course one of our main suppliers, but sometimes he can be a bit pricey. So agents also pull supplies from various.. independents such as yourself. The way it works is simple. Orders are placed and sent here. You, and your competition, come here to retrieve orders. Once they are filled, you can deliver them to the Vitrax or whatever place the order designates. It's first come first serve, so it's good to check every day. Do you have any questions?"

OOCPoison Crafters make 7gm/day, which is 637gm per season. Since you are starting on the 30th you would only get 427gm this season, but of course you won't actually receive that until the 1st of Fall.

Irriari shook her head and smiled at the man. She had no questions. It would be nice to work directly for the Ebonstryfe and The Black Sun, though she was sure her poisons would be put under much more scrutiny than if she had simply sold them to any average human on the street.

“Thank you. I'll come back tomorrow for orders.”

She would have to come at dawn to beat out the other candidates, but she would probably be awake, so it didn't bother her too much.

Keating bent over the paper. The pen looked small and lost in his hand as he filled out the necessary forms, listing his information and skills. He knew better than to think himself a smart man, or even a learned one, for he was a man of dirt and earth, and action, and at times violence. Unused to being in offices such as this, Keating said almost nervously, his voice polite, unnaturally soft, “Thank you, the laborer job would be just fine. I’m a hard worker… I know what to do."

Then the administrator’s words played in the man’s mind, if Keating could do alright on the docks, maybe a promotion to supervisor would come, and then he could get enough money saved to take Rose away from this hell city forever. “It’ll be fine,” he said again.

36 Summer 511AV

Well, the first night hadn’t gone too bad. Scharis had found a nice inn to stay at once he had gotten into the town, spending the rest of the night in the main bar of the Inn playing for all the people for free for the night. Nothing special, just passing the time with people who had been willing to talk with him between songs. It hadn’t been a bad night. A few drinks paid for for him, a free meal and a spare room for the night from the innkeeper. Not that it was any kind of a good room, but it was a place to sleep in relative peace, anyway. The next day, the Innkeeper had directed him toward the CEB for finding solid work. Scharis had dressed himself in his full gear, strapped up all of belongings and headed off down the walkways through the city toward where the Innkeeper had said.

It was a shorter distance than he had actually accepted before he wound up in front of the steps leading up to the doors leading into the office. Scharis stood there for a moment, looking over the front of the building, a calm, cool look etched across his features as he took in the details of the architecture. He nodded to himself for a moment before walking up and pushing through the doors.

Upon entering, Scharis looked around the interior of the primary room, looking around at the desks spotted around the room periodically. He straightened himself a second as he found an open desk. He walked up to the desk, waiting patiently for the man on the other side to finish up whatever he was doing with the forms placed across his desk,” I was told that this is place to come to find legitimate work within Ravok. Is there any way that you could help me with that? I am trying to find employment as both a guard and a performer, possibly. I have skills in my weapons as well at my lute and I would like two jobs, really. That way I can ensure I have enough to live on, you know?”

OOCSorry, it’s a crap post. But I’m a little out of it right now.

Scharis

The clerk eyed the Epharian warily as he entered and sat down. The man made sure to take his time finishing up his paperwork, but the Epharian was persistent and soon began speaking. Sighing, the clerk set aside his paperwork, shoving it into a drawer on his right. Why do I always get stuck with the freaks, he thought to himself before speaking up. "Two jobs? Well, I guess you have four hands so you can do twice the work. Let me see.."

The clerk rummaged through some papers until he finally settled on one blank form. "Go ahead and fill this out." The document was simple enough. It asked for things such as name, race, residence, and an overview of the applicant's skillset and past experience. While Scharis filled out the paperwork the man explained a few things. "Now... being that you are.. er, not from here, you'll have to make a name of yourself before you can try out for the city guard. But we do have a few position open for outsiders. We need a bouncer down at Malfazar's, someone to guard the slaves down at the Slave Market, and the House of Immortal Pleasures is always looking for reliable bouncers, though they may require you to prove yourself to them first. As for entertaining, again Malfazar's or the House of Immortal Pleasures could use you. So for the guard position you have the option of bar, brothel, or slave market. And for entertainment you've got bar and brothel. Your choice."

OOCIts okay, these threads tend to be short anyway. Oh, and please put a timestamp on your post.

Postby Venidus Larkspur on August 31st, 2011, 5:22 am

Summer 91 – 511 AV

Venidus walked through the streets of Ravok trying to convince himself that he wasn’t actually doing what he was doing. Soon, the intricate entryway to Ravok’s Center for Employment and Business Licensing loomed above. People were entering and exiting at a steady rate. The Symenestra could feel their eyes on him. What was a lonesome Symenestra doing in front of the CEB? The only job I’m likely to get is slave, but I can’t stay in Ravok for another year with my funds draining away. Tarsin’s cheapest rooms weren’t quite cheap enough it would seem.

Soon, he built up enough courage to walk through the doors. The muttering from the many desks filled the room, but no words could be distinguished from where Venidus stood. He sighed loudly. Priskil guide me... Every step brought him closer to the desks, and he couldn’t help but to think of the horrors that awaited him. What work was there for a Symenestra in Ravok? He could hardly imagine the amusement or confusion that the person working behind his desk would display.

Walking to the end of the line had been bad, but waiting was even worse. The sound of his footsteps and the moving of his limbs no longer occupied his mind’s attention. All of his focus was on the challenge ahead of him. Do you they just have a room in back where they toss all the minorities and prep them for slavery? The thought almost made him smile, but the fears strangled that fleeting moment.

He was about to turn around and leave. There was only one person between him and the front of the line. His fingers fidgeted nervously and his leg shook lightly. He had turned halfway when the comfortable weight of his crossbow stopped him. Venidus was armed and what a wonderful feeling that was! He took a few deep breaths and ran his quivering fingertips over the leather armor he had put on just for this occasion. He gave one great exhale and then it was his turn.

He was directed to a desk that he walked to dutifully. He took the crossbow off his back and placed it next to the chair before sitting down. He managed to make his voice sound confident despite vivid images of slavery running through his mind, “Hello... I would like a job. One that isn’t as a slave... I can shoot this crossbow decently. I know how to write. I am fluent in Symenos and Common. I can scale walls quite easily and see perfectly in the dark. Those last two things aren’t exactly talents but still are helpful.”

He awaited the response. If they were going to drag him into the back, he vowed to kill at least two of them before going down. That way he could die a happy Symenestra.

Scharis weighed his options for a little bit. He wanted to make sure that he made good choices for the whole thing. Where he worked would say a lot about him, really. And he wanted to make sure it was a place where he could actually make a name for himself and possibly get signed on for the city guard later, possibly. Either that or at least make enough of a name for himself that he'd be able to get some good solid mercenary work later on. A bouncer was a nice place to start, but he wanted to be more than that later on.

The Eypharian smiled to the man, generally disregarding the caviler comments about his race, taking it in stride. He had head enough bout this place to know that it would still be in his worst interests to piss of anyone who worked for the city. As much as he was able to defend himself from the typical slaver scumbags, if the city wanted him gone, it wouldn't be hard for them to do so. So he took the jabs with pride, content in his own knowledge that, since he was and Eypharian, he was better then any common human, "I think I'll the the bouncer position at the brothel and the entertainer spot over at the bar. Better tips for an entertainer at the bar. The men at the brothel are concerned about one thing only. A simple lute player would easily be overlooked. On the other hand, they see a gentleman like me standing guard over the women there, they'll think twice before starting anything stupid." Scharis waited for the man to finish his forms, answering any other questions he had before stood from the desk, bowing his head to the man, "Thank you for you assistance today. I do appreciate it." And with that, he turned and headed back out the doors of the office and out into the streets. He wanted to report to his new employers and make sure there wouldn't be any problems with him being and Eypharian.

Venidus Larkspur

"A job that isn't a slave?" The man at the desk stared at the symenestra for a long time, and Venidus could only wonder at what he was thinking, but slowly the edges of the man's lips began to twitch until suddenly they spread into a wide grin and the man laughed aloud. This drew the attention of every other attendant in the building, for laughter was something rarely heard in the CEB. "You sure about that," the man said rather loudly, though his voice was full of humor, "Some of them slaves live better than we do! Especially if you belong to one of the Families."

The man leaned back in his chair and pulled some papers from his desk, chuckling all the while. Clearly he found himself quite amusing. "Well, you're in luck. This is the Center for Employment and Business Licensing. No slave trading done here. Slavers gotta register here, but you don't gotta worry about us taking you in ourselves. That's between you and them once you step outside these doors." The man placed the paper down in front of Venidus. "Here. Fill this out. If you can't read or write, I can read it for ya."

The form was simple enough. Just a few questions: Name, age, race. A list of skills, and any past work experience one might have. While Venidus worked on that the man sat and waited, twiddling his thumbs and whistling a little tune. Apparently the Symenestra had put him in quite the good mood. Once Venidus had finished the man took back the form and glanced it over for a moment before looking up to he Symenestra. "So, what type of work were you looking for?"
