THREAD AWARDS A cloaked man sat hidden just outside of the campsite, shaking his head at what he saw. Two boys, not even men were disrespecting the god's magical gifts to man. It was as if they were playing magic. Did they not know magic was incredibly dangerous? That it more often got you hunted, tortured, and killed? He had been watching them for some time now, ever since he watched them use it in games of chance. He pulled his arms out of his robes, seeing the many scars magic had earned him. He had been hoping that they would learn their lesson before their powers grew. But that was not the case. Two reckless kids with the power of the gods. Something had to be done, or all mages would be hunted into extinction.
He watched the one lose control and pass out, while the other used some flashy Reimancy to destroy the toy sword. This was his chance. He stepped into the camp site, struggling against his walking staff. His obvious limp was another side effects of magic gone wild. He would not let that happen to another. But some lessons could only be taught with force and pain. As he neared the two, Res exuded from the bottoms of his feet, which he ignited as his feet left the ground, giving the impression that flames sprouted from where he walked. He flicked his fingers toward the campfire, a few drop sized Res balls falling in, capturing the essence of the fire. As Clyde looked up at him, he moved the flames inches from Clyde's eyes. Then the man spoke, in a voice that seemed ages old, laden with Djed, "Mortals. You dare play with the magic given to your kind." He added more Res to the flames in front of Clyde, making the whole world appear on fire. Through the flickers of flame, his eyes caught Clyde's. The trap was sprung, as the hypnotic power in the man's gaze and voice took a hold of Clyde. "You dare toy with these gifts? Flaunt them? Spread them? PLAY?!? You know nothing of the dangers of magic!" The small fireballs before Clyde sprang forward, sinking into the skin of his face, six large circular burns total. With more Djed in his voice, "Do not cry out or flinch! You deserve this pain mortal!" Clyde remained rigid at the hypnotic command, the pain weakening his mind, allowing the man more access. The man knelt down in front of Clyde, eyes locked, his hypnotic strength growing over the young man. "For your wanton use, to save you," here his eyes suggested his care for their well being, "You should know, magic isn't real." The words he used were practically dripping with the strength of his Djed. "You don't know magic, you've never known magic. You will not use it again." These thoughts were planted deep into the young man, becoming a part of him. "Let the pain wash over you, wiping my existence from your mind." With that, Clyde succumbed to the pain of his burns, and passed out.
The man conjured another small ball of fire, and tossed it at the other boy's rump. It landed and quickly caught fire. The boy woke with a start, groggy from over giving. The man snuffed the flames, and once more with his Djed laden voice, "Look at me mortal." Bob found himself looking up at the old man. "Do you know me mortal?" he asked. Bob shook his head. "I am the one who holds your fate. You have slighted us. You do not fear magic, you do not respect it. And for that, you shall learn." He leaned in close to Bob as he had done with Clyde, his gaze filled with Djed holding him still. "Let's see you play with magic boy. Don't stop until I command you." Bob found himself doing as the man sound, pouring his Djed from his mouth as if by vomit. He kept it up until the Djed was a simple trickle, nearing the edge of unconsciousness once more. "Stop. Look at me once more boy." Bob complied, his mind weak, vision fading, "You have been fooled. Your companion is no friend of yours. Magic is not real. He tricked you into thinking magic was real, and tricked you into thinking you were learning it. It was all a lie," with a bit more Djed, "Magic is not real, and you've never known magic." The old man was certain he had planted the thoughts properly, and he had. "Now let unconsciousness take you boy."
The man left the two at the campsite, snuffing the campfire before hand. He was no god, but those boys would think he had been. As he strolled out, he used his strongest Djed for a mere phrase that would slip into their subconsciouses. "Find Sahova, or forever be mortal." The man was exhausted from teaching them that necessary lesson. Both would think magic to be false no matter how any other person displayed it to them. He had imbedded the thought deep in their minds. Their brains would manage to make a non magical reason for any magic they may witness. The still had their magical skills, but wouldn't know how to use any of them any longer. Finally, he tore the two apart by planting dissent in Bob's mind. Maybe the two would reunite in Sahova, maybe they would never learn magic again, but the man's lesson would keep them alive. He smiled as he struggled off into the distance. Bob Barton
