21 Summer, 511 AV Denen had found an old, worn pot in a rubbish heap. He had scrubbed it clean and heaped the insides with good dirt, which he had mixed with manure he'd nicked from Horse and Dohaina. He was sure they weren't going to miss it. Besides, he had read somewhere that manure was good for fertilizing. His sister-in-law had taught him that when he was a little boy. She was from Riverfall, and his brother had married her before Denen was even born. Her children were only a few years younger than Denen, and had been raised more like his siblings that Stone's sons and daughters had been. Lelat, their eldest, had always looked down on him for his handicap. Still, his sister-in-law had been kind enough to show him the method, though he'd rarely used it himself. He had punctured holes in the bottom of the bucket so that it would drain well, as his brother's wife had told him was important for this particular plant. Having purchased a fennel seed, he pushed a little divot into the earth with his thumb. Into this, he carefully placed the seed, and then covered it with a thin layer of dirt. He smiled proudly, before he looked about for the bucket of water he'd brought. He dipped in his hands, filling them with water, and then gently drizzled this over the dirt. He gave a satisfied nod, and hugged the pot. He would have to show Sam. He wondered what he'd think. Plants like this were a novelty amongst the Drykas, as it was inconvenient to plant and worry about moving. But he intended to keep this plant, and to love it well. It would be nice to have something to tend to. |
