Akilah stretched, excited as she stood at the outskirts of her city, her home. The tents stretched behind her, a sea of cloth and colour, and she turned away from them to stare into the wild plains. The sun was still high in the sky, shining down hotly, and she reached up to wipe the sweat off her forehead.
Soon, very soon, her mother would be returning. Maybe she'd have stories of skirmishes or confused travelers, filling the night with her laughter and smiles. Or maybe she'd have a gift, some strange object she found while traveling around the borders of their land.
Either way, she'd be here soon: today, tomorrow, next week. It had been months since Akilah last saw her. In that time, she'd grown, becoming a much better fighter. If her mother found out, maybe even witnessed the advanced skills, then maybe...
She shook her head, clearing her thoughts. She still didn't know when the border party would return, let alone if there would be any time between shifts. Still didn't know enough to impress anyone with.
Beside her, Adámas dipped her head, nibbling on the small green shoots that she loved so, tail swishing to whisk away the flies. She shifted her weight slightly and a breeze ruffled her mane. Sometimes, in face of her strider's patience, Akilah felt like a child. Still needing to grow and learn and get that wisdom that her grandma carried with her, colouring her conversations.
There was a small sigh from below, and the mass at her feet grew lighter.
"Maybe I can ask her why I have you," she added aloud, glancing down at her feet where Vespera sat. His dark coat had just finished shedding its thicker, winter fur.
As if in response, he got up quickly, energized from this brief rest. Giving a small yip, he darted forward into the long grass. Still only a pup, he was too short for her to see clearly, only noticing the slight sways of the grass as he moved about. He barked every now and then, excited, and Akilah sat down, watching.
A little further, she saw a woman and her strider, her dog sitting beside her. She didn't fully recognize them, but they were kin nonetheless, and getting up, she approached the trio, Adámas trotting beside her.
