Service Idea. Kindly Advice

Postby Arseney Sorokin on June 13th, 2011, 7:25 pm

Hello members of Mizahar,
My name is Arseney Sorokin, I've been a role-player and a game master for almost ten years and I require your help.
I know that a lot of you live a very busy life, whether it's the job, studies, or any other activity, not everyone has the time to arrange a role-playing group, go to friends, and perform all the required preparations to enjoy your true hobby - Role-playing.
Others are just living in locations where there are not enough role-players or no skilled Game Masters to run a truly exciting and indulging campaign.
These are the people I wish to provide my service to.

What is the service?
I wish to build a website with advanced role-playing features, meant to optimize the communication between the players, the Game Master and the core rules of the game mechanics, all done to improve the experience of my future clients.
In addition, I will be arranging player groups, based on the times most comfortable for them to play on and Game Mastering (At least until, hopefully, I will have enough clients to justify hiring other Game Masters).

What I ask of you is very simple - Advice.
*Would you pay for such a service?
*What payment method do you find most suitable for your current needs?
*What would make you believe in the integrity of the supplier of the service?
*On what core rules do you prefer the games to run? (D&D 3.5? D&D 4? WoD? Free Style? Anything else? Or maybe you are tired of the known set of rules and would prefer something new and refreshing?)
*What other things do you find neccessery for such a service to work?
Any advice would be highly appreciated.
I thank you for your time,
Sincerely, Arseney. :)

Service Idea. Kindly Advice

Would you pay for such a service? - Probably not, unless the service was VERY good.

What payment method do you find most suitable for your current needs? - Not sure what you mean here, but PayPal or other online payment methods would be most effective. As far as payment for services, either a flat monthly fee, or "minutes". Possibly a combination of the two, to let users choose which is the best bet for them.

What would make you believe in the integrity of the supplier of the service? - For most of the people I have spoken to, the appearance of the website is a big indicator. Of course, word of mouth is the best indicator. If your service pops up in a Google search under [Service]+scam, that is always a prime indicator of an unreliable service.

On what core rules do you prefer the games to run? (D&D 3.5? D&D 4? WoD? Free Style? Anything else? Or maybe you are tired of the known set of rules and would prefer something new and refreshing?) - For a pay service, you would be best served focusing, or at least starting, with the "big name" table tops: D&D 3.5/4e, WoD, GURPS.

What other things do you find neccessery for such a service to work? - This depends on the type of service that you are hoping to run. Are you going to provide a hosting location for virtual tabletop games? If yes, are you going to have map making tools, pre-built maps and tokens, etc? Do you intend to offer message board and forum services for gamers to set up meetings in their area?

A big thing to think about is, alot of the services I listed above are available at varying quality for free already. Using existing message boards to find groups, Skype for communications, MapTools for a virtual tabletop, etc. The big thing that will have to set you apart in order to get paid for your investment will be the quality of service.

If I had something to say here, it's that it's rather crass to talk about paid services in a site such as Mizahar. Around here roleplay is great, community is great, the writing, as well as the writers are great, are you don't even have to pay for anything, except maybe electricity and internet service, but that totally misses my point.

I assume that people wouldn't want to put a premium to their roleplay experience if there are already great sites such as Mizahar - with willing people and volunteers who will help you and try their best to provide the best game experience.

I am nothing special, of this I am sure. I am a common woman with common thoughts and I've led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me, this has always been enough.

Indeed, this is not appropriate material for the site.
