5th Summer, 511 A.V. After about ten minutes of walking with his satchel full of lunch, clinking bottles, and other things, Hadrian began to rethink the whole secluded birthday party idea, but it had so excited Kendall, he just bit his lip and kept walking despite the bite of the strap to his shoulder. He held onto Kendall's hand and continued toward the little waterfall that Ethan had found at his request and told him all about. They were practically there now after thirty minutes of picking their way carefully over fallen logs and boulders, and suddenly they walked into a little pocket of paradise on earth. The summer sun filtered by greenery overhead, though plenty of aching blue sky shone through. Hadrian pulled Kendall's hand up to his mouth to kiss it, then smiled one of his furtive, little smiles and let go so he could spread the horse blanket over a spot of springy moss. Then he pulled Kendall down to sit with him and began pulling out two bottles of wine and the food he had been saving for the last four days, more delicate things that wouldn't survive the long trip. Each little addition was something that held a memory, even if it was just something Kendall had mentioned loving in passing as they walked through the markets of Syliras. Last but not least, he pulled out a cabochon emerald and placed it in Kendall's hand. "It's not much yet," he said quietly, "but it reminds me of your eyes when I first... was aware of you. We're looking for a way to put you back the way you were, but I... I want you to know that I will love you either way... in whichever body you live in. And someday I'll enchant this for you and set it properly and then it will be a princely gift. I promise." |
