Considered one of the most mysterious cities in Mizahar, Alvadas is called The City of Illusions. It is the home of Ionu and the notorious Inverted. This city sits on one of the main crossroads through The Region of Kalea.

While not part of Alvadas in earnest, The Patchwork Port is the easiest way into the city. It began as a small settlement created out of necessity to fish and receive trade, but its population has swelled to hundreds of fishermen and guides through the city.

There is no logic to its construction; the place has too many styles all thrown together. There are tall homes with flat roofs and short with steep, made up of almost every kind of wood there is. There are homes on stilts and close to the ground and places where there is no clear distinction between building and dock.

A microculture has developed here, too ordinary to find a comfortable home in Alvadas and too strange to live far away. Everyone knows each other's name, and they are closely bound. Everyone plays some vital part in this place, and they act, in business and in play, as a collective body.

Upon Approach By Sea

Upon arriving in Alvadas by ship, a traveller would first notice the mass of brightly coloured buildings that make up the Patchwork Port. The city proper begins though, of course, at the modestly tall wall that rings Alvadas. Not much can be seen over the top of this wall, and thus far the illusionary powers of the city are hidden behind this façade.

The streets of the Patchwork Port meander this way and that, in a pattern that evolved over time. Yet from the actual port, where ships bustle to and fro, a wide road lined with peddlers and traders leads up a slight incline to the main entrance into Alvadas. This is the Gaping Maw. Whether you arrive by ship or land, this gate is there to welcome you.

___

The coastline of Alvadas is for the most part disregarded. In each direction there are scrubby beaches that rise into sand dunes and then a sort of low-lying cliff that is peppered with local birdlife and curious herbs. The beaches are habitually used by fishermen, who drag their ships up onto the shore when there is no space in the port. Further out, the beaches turn to pebbles, and then rocks, and finally become difficult to traverse as cliffs rise with sharp teeth (about two miles away from Alvadas).

Extensive lores of the Suvan Sea and the Syliras route.

Character:
Wharf is a weathered man, his face all hard lines twisted into a shape that isn't fit for smiling. Years of working in the wind and rain have made him hard. While me may not be young anymore his body is still strong, and always he's right there amongst the rigging, working with an expertise that awes and inspires those under him.

He was a sailor for many long years, traveled the Syliras route down to Zeltiva and back again more times than you could count on all your fingers and toes. He's savvy, knows the way the world works. Visitors find him impressive both at water and behind the table.

All the exciting bits of his life behind him, Wharf is content to make his living in Alvadas and watch his children find their own paths through the world. After half a lifetime of living with the seas between him and his wife, he is happy for the warm, but the want of the sea never leaves him, and he has a weakness for tales of salt and wave and storm.

Known throughout the Patchwork Port, Wharf is the first one to approach should you require assistance or a place to dock your boat.

[Alvadas Location] Wooden Wonders Workshop

Wooden Wonders Workshop

Image

The Kinnan family workshop is a slightly run down, tumbling building that overlooks the Suvan's gentle waters. It's still a work in progress by the Kinnan family, with items and features being added all the time. As one approaches the shop, most often one might see Cadog and Ferny working outside on a boat in their modest dry dock, popping back and fourth into the workshop to fetch instruments and wood. On rainy days, a blanket of oiled canvas is thrown over any work that can't be moved inside, and the Kinnan's move into the workshop, which is filled with the aroma of wood, varnish and paint. The walls are lined with various tools and instruments, and there are work tables scattered around with various wooden items strewn over any unused surfaces.

The shop doubles as the Kinnan's home with the entire second story dedicated to housing the laid back woodworkers. As business is conducted on the ground floor, most times the Kinnan's spend the day in the workshop with the house proper as more of a bedroom than anything else. A sign is tacked to the front door, slightly frayed on the edges, inviting those who seek assistance to simply knock or shout.

Services and Merchandise

Wooden Toys
These are small, wooden items which Cadog carves in his spare time, having always had a soft spot for them. They usually are made out of cheap wood, or off-cuts, and are sometimes jointed so that they move. In keeping with Alvad culture, many of Cadog's toys move in mysterious ways, or use ingenious little tricks and sleights of the eye to fool and amaze the owner.
Note :
Anyone wishing to buy a toy can improvise what they would like to buy! Please keep in mind that these items are limited to physics and the wood they are crafted from. The price will be determined by the grader, but feel free to add a suggestion in a note.

Figureheads
Cadog's main source of income, crafted on commission, is in the form of intricate figureheads that he carves. From dancing women, splashing dolphins, typhoons, stars, waves to much more, these figureheads are carved from more expensive bits of wood, and he often sells them to Svefrans or merchants looking to decorate their ship (sometimes even the polite pirate).

Shipwriting
Cadog doesn't have a large workforce, as it's mostly himself and his son and whatever hired help they occasionally get. So, in a season, Cadog usually only builds about one boat, if that. However, the vessel is much loved, and lovingly hand-crafted. Cadog caters to all, and always tries to build the boat to the specifications given, and he always gifts the buyer a special, hand-crafted figurehead as his trademark.
Rowboat 150 GM A small, simple rowboat, found almost anywhere there are people and water. These boats are propelled by a single set of oars. Crew: 1, Passengers: 3 Half a season (45 days)
Casinor 620 GM A small, personal ship no longer than 30 feet with a single cabin. More than twice the size of the average rowboat, this ship is capable of traversing inland seas and coastal areas though it is unequipped to travel on the open ocean. The most common personal ship found among the Svefra. These ships are often found employing heavy harpoons for defense. Much of the free space on the ship has been converted into living quarters thus cargo is limited to 500 lbs. While it may carry a number of passengers, these boats are designed for a single person spending extended periods at sea. Crew: 1, Passengers: 5 Two seasons (180 days)
Catamaran 1210 GM A small, multihulled vessel consisting of two parallel hulls of equal size connected by a frame. These small, personal ships are roughly 30 feet in length. Though similar in overall size to the Svefra Casinor, the Catamaran is not designed for extended periods at sea (though it may be modified for such). They contain room enough for simple living quarters as well as light cargo and some simple comfort. The Catamaran is found in use by all manner of sailor for its flexibility of use and ease of customizing to fit individual needs. Crew: 1-2, Passengers: 3-5 Two and a half seasons (220 days)

Cadog is a man who enjoys life to the brim. He's always busy, making a new toy for his relatives, or getting that particular bit of the stern fixed with a new carving. He is a man with a loving, doting family and the years have been good to him, he looks young for his age. Along with his family and extended family, Cadog lives in the Patchwork Port, overlooking the lapping waters of the Suvan.

Cadog had always loved wooden items. From a very young age, he could remember his mother buying him little wooden toys, which he delighted in. With an analytical but also artistic mind, he would carefully take apart each toy, trying to work out how they were made. When he was just sixteen he went travelling to learn more about wood-work, and spent a great deal of time in Zeltiva learning how to be a shipwright and general woodworker.

He returned to Alvadas years later, setting up his own business, falling in love, and building a family. Though his apprenticeship in Zeltiva had taught him much, he had found that Alvadas, even on the boarders of the Patchwork Port, was the true place for him and his trained talents. He now apprentices his son, Ferny, and will take on any able soul willing to learn.

He can usually be seen bending over a wooden carving, chisel in hand, cropped brown hair slightly dusted with woodchips. If you were to look over at him, his smile would be quick to appear, and a waved greeting would accompany him as he calls out a cheerful greeting in his melodious, tenor voice.

Fern, as he is known affectionately by his family, had always been a ruffian. With his dark, curling hair and his broad shoulders, when he was a child he was always getting into scrapes. A playful but slightly moody individual, Ferny is always trying to better himself. Although originally unwilling to follow in his fathers footsteps, Fern was often needed in his father's workshop, and under Cadog's careful eye, quickly grew to love wood-working.

Fern usually enjoys cutting up planks and sourcing supplies, crafting the raw ingredients for his father. He especially enjoys haggling with suppliers to gain the best rate, usually with a bit of banter and a lot of laughter and concentration in equal measure. He is a friendly presence, and often he helps to acclimatize any hired help to their work with levity of a more jocular sort. He is, however, impatient, which means that any sluggishness tends to be rewarded with either an ardent fit of shouting or a well thought out prank when one is least expecting it. Fern is quite impulsive, and can often be seen after work playfully brawling with his friends, or perhaps a bit of gambling at the nearby tavern.

Postby Kaleidoscope on February 25th, 2017, 5:25 pm

The Primrose

A small cherry red casinor can be found drifting about the docks of Alvadas. It isn't the most visited of ships, but those who do find themselves on a tiny deck, with scattering of bright flowers in similarly coloured pots around them and a small bench, often carrying large coils of rope. Inside the scene is a little more cosy, with once section a living and sleeping area and the other half reserved for a kitchen and workstation. Any manner of preserved foods, mainly pickled fish, can be requested upon this boat for a small price.

[For prices, consult the Price List found in the wiki.
This is a self-modded location, feel free to utilise the NPCs within reason].
