Belgar, of the Icewatch [Belgar] A male dire polar bear kelvic, age 12, born Summer 51, 499. [Appearance] In his human form, Belgar stands a little over six feet tall, 190 pounds of muscle. Otherwise, he shares many characteristics with the Vantha, including a red-violet iridescence on his dark hair; however he keeps his hair cut very short so that it will not get in his way. His irises retain the same bold black of his animal form, flashing color only with the greatest of emotion, which does not happen often. For a polar bear, he is middle aged, and the faint wrinkles of that age are apparent on his face. An athletic build comes from the life inherent to his birth, as do the various scars beneath his clothes. He bears the Morwen's gnosis on the small of his chest, just below his heart. His bear form is very large, even for his species, at 9'9" on his hind legs and nearly 1800 lbs. His face is shorter than average, reminiscent of his hominid features. His black eyes also match his human self, but as an animal he is more likely to succumb to the whims of emotion and distress, and therefore auroral color changes. His brilliant white fur shines silver in a spot over his chest, where the gnosis marks his skin. [Demeanor] He is honorable and strong-willed, always ready to fight but never picking one out. While very passionate for his work and his people, most of his emotion is heavily internalized. When he speaks, his words are carefully chosen and typically few. To some, the man may seem simple, but anyone who has met him more than once can detect that he is full of thoughts which he simply cannot voice. Despite his outward silence, Belgar was not always antisocial. Though he seemed humble and awkward, he tried to spend time in public areas, listening to conversation and smiling at the cheerful Vantha. In their company, he had developed a desire to understand beauty like an artist. Unable to do so, he has since turned to anger and instinct in a rebellion against the culture that abandoned him when his bondmate died. [History] Born to two bear kelvics of the same profession, Belgar was raised nameless in the Icewatch Barracks until he was three years old. He was trained alongside his older sister and younger brother, but knew them no more or less than any of the other bears with whom he lived. He grew into a solitary creature, preferring practice and contemplation over the meager kelvic society. He did not have much time to wait and yearn for a master. Shortly after he came of age, a female Icewatch guard saw potential in him; her name was Seisswyn of Skyglow. She named him, carved trinkets for him, and introduced him to her friends, forced him to learn to smile and socialize. Uncomfortable at first, he was ultimately grateful for her persistence. He became more appreciative of conversation and small comforts. He was content. During the darkest days of Winter 510, Belgar and Seisswyn answered a call for aid while patrolling the Port. A ship of dishonest merchants had ventured into Morwen's seas, seeking money and mayhem. As one of the first to arrive, his mistress was caught off guard by a burst of fire reimancy and thrown from his back. Trusting her valor and endurance, Belgar obeyed the command to continue on alongside the others. The pirates put up a fight, and for the first time in a long time, he and she fought separately. Barely two hours had passed and most of the cowards had returned to their ship. They were raising the anchor when an intense heat engulfed the docks. Fighting hand-to-hand with Seisswyn, the same reimancer had lost control of his magic and set them both alight. He jumped into the cold waters and presumably died, or was rescued by his mates. Her burning body was smothered by her bondmate's thick fur, but her wounds were too severe. She died that evening. Belgar lived in Skyglow for a short time, but could not stand to stay after long. He returned to the Icewatch Barracks and there resumed his old mindless training, feeling emptiness for the first time. He tried to seek out art, because she loved it, and stay true to everything she had taught him about life and culture, but his memory of her slipped quickly. He was left to embarrass himself with an incomplete understanding of the world until finally he forsook her guidance and turned inward, to his true animal nature. He cannot bring himself to hate or resent her, but the backlash can be seen in his treatment of the Vantha people, which have become more of a burden than an honor to serve.
