Vanos Strongarm Coglias Basic Information Name: Vanos Strongarm Coglias Race: Isur Birthday: Spring, 469 AV Age: 42 Gender: Male Physical Description Vanos doesn’t have anything on his body that makes him appear any different from what one would assume of an Isurian; he’s short, muscle-bound, pale-skinned and has one arm that is stronger and bigger than the other. His height doesn’t vary much from the standard norm of his brothers and sisters, as he stands at a standard five feet – it’s merely his weight that differentiates himself; Vanos tips the scale at a frightening three hundred pounds of solid muscle and strength. When these stats are compared to other races, body proportions seem exaggerated and monstrous, but for the Isur race, Vanos is merely a man that takes good care of his body, and has strengthened it considerably more than the standard Isruian. While most Isur are graced with strength from dense skin, bones and a strong musculature, Vanos has taken the time and dedication to strengthen his body and continues to make it stronger as he enters his adult years. He keeps his face free of any permanent facial hair but he’s forever in battle with keeping the scruff of a five o’clock shadow from darkening his face. By the end of the day a dark shadow of facial hair adorns his angular face, matching the dark brown and closely cropped hair on his head. Framing the top of his dark green eyes is the bony ridge – unique to the Isurians – that makes Vanos appear that he’s in deep contemplation with a mind that is with the forms and not reality. His dominant left arm bulges at his side with the same dark green hue of his eyes. Curling around the bulge of his shoulder, Vanos has a single mark of Gnosis from Izurdin, a dark and elaborate tattoo that shows his dedication and devotion to his god has been recognized. The thickened, pale skin that covers his body has protected Vanos in the past from simple injuries and wounds that would penetrate a human’s flesh like butter, but this skin also serves as a way of insulating his body’s warmth while keeping the cold out. This convenience combined with an Isur’s thicker-than-usual body type leaves Vanos little option for comfortable and non-hindering clothing when he’s working and thus he will wear nothing more than a pair of work pants and sturdy work boots, leaving his upper body bare to the elements and the heat of the forge. Character Concept Vanos could be characterized as more social and outgoing than the rest of his peers – but this characterization is only brought about by the fact that he looks over to strangers near him and gives them a nod or a very curt greeting upon seeing them. This openness to new races and their generosity and kindness towards him have opened Vanos up to being more social around races other than Isurians – Vanos is far more social than a regular Isur would be if they were in Vanos’ boots. This is a far cry from the way that he acts with his own kind and especially his own clan and family where he physically retreats from any Isur social interaction to focus on something tangible that he can work with – the forge. He has little to show in regards to extravagant displays of his wares, and while he knows how to wrestle and fight like regular Coglias clan members, Vanos wasn’t the type of Isurian to show it off merely to win a pissing contest. His exposure to non-Isruains, prior to travelling to past the gates of his clan, has been limited in regards to seeing and talking to strangers and other races. The most common tongue spoken among the humans and others is one that Vanos has a loose grasp upon – he can talk to someone in a curt fashion, expressing what he needs to, but in a way that makes Vanos sound as simple as a shoe. This utterly frustrates Vanos who found very few people who, in turn, could speak and understand Isur and thus with his few interactions with strangers he kept his speeches short while physically remaining in their presence as he tried to pick up the language as fast as possible. Character History Vanos was born the youngest child in a family of five – his warrior father, crafter mother and two older brothers. His brothers, Visinir and Voner, were two and four years his senior who would become outstanding members of Izurdin’s Hammer, an aspiration that his father had hoped would also be in his youngest son. Despite being raised the same way as his brothers, Vanos never took to the same interests as his siblings and instead found a passion in the creation of objects with his bare hands. The fire of the forge was one that captured his attention as a child and has now permanently burned a place in his soul. While the Coglias clan was known as the protectors of the remains of the Isurian race, Vanos never felt that desire to strap on armour and arm himself to fight for the safety of his people; he wasn’t cynical in regards to their ability to withhold the dangers back from his world, his interest merely lie in something other than fighting. It was as plain as daylight that the guards were well stocked with some of the best fighters the Coglias clan could produce and thus one brother not participating in battle would not be the downfall of his people. Despite his reluctance to join the military, Vanos still underwent military training and served under a lesser auxiliary and “retired” from military service to focus on arms and armour construction. His family wasn’t particularly keen on his choice of career paths, but didn’t hinder his appreciation and devotion to arms creation. If anything they benefited from this deviation from a regular Isurian in the Coglias clan by having direct access to someone who was heavily skilled in one of the many aspects of blacksmithing that could easily mend and create arms for his family. Vanos’s brothers didn’t understand their younger brother’s choice and didn’t openly support it, either, as he was chastised for his decision to not fight “like a normal Coglian,” and combined with his less than exhibitionist attitude in regards to showing off his strength or wares to the opposite sex. There had been talk for many years about a highway between Sulturos and the rest of society, most notably from Denval. To appease their desire for Isurian assistance, Vanos was chosen to assist with the construction on Denval’s end of a highway. Sending a Coglian Isurian is a bit of a questionable choice for someone to aid construct something of that magnitude, but the more skilled craftsmen couldn’t simply drop their obligations to their clan to assist humans with their dream. Vanos volunteered for the position and would have done anything to get it; while he didn’t hate his family and brothers, constant discussions of his brothers’ triumphs was tiring to Vanos who had no inclination to try and best their feats of strength. If Vanos hadn’t known better, he would have thought that his brothers were half Vantha by the way they managed to turn a simple tale into one so grandiose it elicited gasps from the audience. Unbeknownst to his brothers, Vanos’ father gave him the family sword – a broken scimitar that his grandfather had used and his grandfather before that. The history of that sword was one in which the Strongarm children would hear many stories about as a child but always assumed that the broken sword was nothing more than a folktale. The gift of that weapon to Vanos was from his father so that the youngest son could possibly heal the weapon and return it back to its original condition and also with the faint hope that his son would, after seeing the world beyond that of the mountains, join his brothers in Izurdin’s Hammer. |
