Crap! I so thought it was "just desserts". I thought it was a snarky phrase, but apparently it's a literal one!
I once read a story called "Just Deserts" where this guy's plane crashed in a desert. He was just a kid, and his parents had died in the crash. So he starts wandering the desert in search of help, spends the night somewhere when it got dark and cold. The next day he sees something in the distance and thinks it could be a camp--but it's the plane crash. He's gone in a circle.
This happens again at least another two times, where his wandering brings him back in a circle to find the plane again. Through narrative flashbacks, we gradually learn that his father had trusted him to refuel the plane before they took off, but he forgot to. When his father asked if he had, he said that he did, trying to avoid getting in trouble. This is the reason the plane crashed.
The last time he returns to the plane crash, he finds there is a third body along with his parent's corpses--his own. He is dead, doomed to wander the desert in a circle for the rest of eternity as penance for his guilt.
So I thought "Just Deserts" was a play on words, part of the reason I thought "desserts" was the correct word. Crap.
I also was using "simplistic" incorrectly, without proper respect for its literal meaning. The rest I think I've been using as they were intended!
In the daytime I am one of Syna's fallen.
At night, I am Symenestra.
