More Lengthy Note!

September was surreal and I can't even believe its gone already and so too is October. It's true what they say about time passing quickly the older you get and the more data forgets to get recorded into your brain. I've had a lot of distractions this last two months. But whereas my mother's situation was my own to go on and on about in my scrap, the distractions I've been dealing with were someone else's and thus didn't belong here or on social media at all. Sometimes the best thing we can do to help someone heal is be quiet and talk about anything BUT the pink elephant in the room.

I did want to talk about something more personal though. I've been quiet about it a long time and for many reasons, but now is probably as good as any time to address certain things. Miz has been on the back burner for me. And it is obvious that a site with the leadership away or distracted isn't a healthy one. So that's going to stop happening. I meant for it to stop happening the first of this month, but the plain fact of the matter is that work's busy season is upon us and I'm absolutely buried until that lets up a bit. Its usually by Halloween that things calm down, but this year I'm not so sure. Regardless, I know its rough this year because my Samhain vacation has already been canceled.

In the mean time though there's been lots of undercurrents lately of lets just say people who want drama in their lives more than they want peace. And because of it, some people have been feeling attacked. I want to repost something here for everyone to dwell on if they choose and hopefully it will help you or someone else get through some rough times. .

Maybe this will help those of you who tend to label me uncaring or insensitive understand me a bit more because I absolutely ascribe to these principles and own them in my own life. I want you to especially take not of Developing Agency. Many of the people who have been asked to game elsewhere and not return here haven't a clue what this means. It might be time to start learning.

Jen

We’ve all been there. Someone decides to go on a moral mission against us, challenging our beliefs, actions, even character. They may pick out embarrassing details about our lives, our past, even our families. They may even make things up.

Yes, we’ve all been attacked personally. And while the phrase “Don’t take anything personally” is generally good advice, personal attacks feel very, well, personal.

And yet while we remind ourselves that the actions taken against us are a reflection of the attacker’s character, and not ours, we are still angry, and maybe on some level, even feel like attacking back. But we also know two things: attacking back may provide some short term relief, but our attack will probably just incite a war, and we don’t want to be that person.

So just what do we do instead? Here are six steps to help you not take personal attacks personally.

Accept the Anger. When you’ve just been attacked, anger is a normal response. It’s what is supposed to happen. And anger is an indication that things matter to you. If your actions, beliefs, values, and character didn’t matter to you — if how you are perceived didn’t matter to you — you wouldn’t get angry. But of course it does, because you care. So you have to recognize that the anger is ok — in fact healthy — to feel. Anger, when harnessed, is also a very useful emotion. It propels action, which is exactly what you are going to use it for here.

Confront the Shame. On some level, we all feel a sense of shame when attacked. But when the attack is personal — especially if it comes from a place of contempt (also known as moral superiority) — it is meant to cause shame. Probably, details about your life were carefully selected to create the effect. Especially if the attack is public, this can be extraordinarily damaging — just think of how harmful being attacked in the media is to public figures. Yet shame is also something that we all must confront. We all have things that we wished could remain forever hidden. Things we wished no one else knew, or that never happened altogether. And shame, simply put, can make you keep hiding. So, confront it. Ask yourself why you feel bad about what the attacker is saying about you. If it’s true, ask yourself if you can live with the truth about yourself. And if it’s not true, you are going to prove them wrong. Either way, you are going to face the shame head on, and learn that it doesn’t control you.

Detach From The Need. We all would like to be seen as smart, kind, honest, loving, whatever. And so we put energy, time, and dedication into creating that image. Yet at any point, this can be called into question — and often unfairly when we are being attacked. And so, above everything else, you must know who you are. And you must be able to let go of the need to be seen in any way, by anyone — except yourself. And this doesn’t mean you don’t care — of course you do, which is why you put effort into doing things that you believe are right, just and good — but what it does mean is that you recognize what you have control over and detach from what you don’t. And consequently, the more you are driven by a need to be liked, the more you mold your image to other peoples’ perception of who you should be. And the further you move from who you really are. If you are going to play to an audience — make it you own.

Revisit Your Values. When your values, beliefs, actions or character are called into question, the intent is to cause you to question them. The point is to rattle you, cause you shame, pain, and rejection. And ultimately, the intent is to get you to act against your values. And if you do, you not only have been betrayed by others, but you have betrayed your own values. Instead, what having your values called into question really should do is cause you to solidify them. It should cause you to recommit yourself, to become that much stronger in what you believe, and ultimately, that much less likely to be shaken from your values.

Develop Agency. Knowing your values is one thing, but having proof is another. Developing agency is about connecting your values to tangible acts that you can point to as evidence — for yourself when needed, and for everyone else. It’s the difference between saying, “I’m a helpful person,” and actually carrying someone’s groceries, helping a child cross the street, staying with a friend during a difficult time, and yes, not attacking back. What agency gives you is backbone, because beliefs are only as good as the acts they inspire. So when someone attacks you, and calls who you are into question, you can point to all of the things that you have done — and will continue to do — and you won’t need to fight back, because your acts speak for you, and you have nothing to prove.

Repeat. Some attacks sting more than others, especially the ones that either come from close to home — like a close friend, lover, or business partner — or hit close to home — like very personal information that you shared in the deepest of confidence. And sometimes, you need to review the steps above, and yes, sometimes you will need to repeat them. In fact, anytime you feel attacked, you can repeat them.

Not taking things personally is good advice. And it’s something that we can all be reminded of from time to time. But maybe when personally attacked, we need to expand the advice to, Don’t take things personally, and don’t ingest the attack. Instead, use it as fuel. Fuel to inspire you — and probably everyone else around you — to be better, and to prove them wrong.

NANO

I can't imagine November without NaNo. I dont know if Tarot is going to have time to do anything for NaNo for the site this year and I know that I can't track things with my time availability. I can barely grab time to do the HD tickets. But I anticipate work slowing down soonish and I'm going to do my best to do my 50K words with my PC. I'll keep track of it on my own if necessary. It's just not November without it.

I'm still fighting off the remnants of a serious infection. A Zpack, some time off, and lots of sleep has really helped. If the cough goes away then I'm golden to get started on NaNo. I hope I can get caught up on old posts and push forward with new ones.

Graders Please Note :
As Ball is getting closer and closer to maxing out Pyken as a skill, I would like to request that in places where Ball is not doing enough to constitute Pyken XP if Pyken technique lores could be issued instead.

Examples of proper XP level for Pyken would be: Ball developing or refining his technique by adding new thing against an actual moving target, not a dummy.

The use of basic skills alone are not enough to accomplish XP at Ball's current level of Pyken.

Thank you.

I will be handling all Ball related posts on Mondays @ 1800 my time *

If you are looking for old posts to look into, there is that old thread you wanted to do with me back in summer. It just kinda slipped into the cracks, but I'm still up for it.

Being that its a bit late now, I recall we did NaJu in 2014. If there isn't NaNo this month, we could always bring NaJu back later on.

[Gossamer's Scrapbook] The Ethereal Canyon

Its Past Due Time For a Real World Rant.

I'm so sick of all this fighting about Refugees and whether they should be welcomed in the US (or any country for that matter). I hear it on the news. I see it on social media. It seems to me that both sides basically suck.

The side that wants all the refugees to come on in and uses the argument that everyone in the US is basically an immigrant at one time a generation or two ago are so narrow minded and idiotic. Why? America wasn't 'settled' by immigrants. America was STOLEN from Native Peoples by people with better tech, high numbers, and superior immune systems that had been exposed to diseases that were new to America's natives. That's what happened. The natives did not WELCOME the refugees fleeing famine and oppression from Europe. America was colonized only back when MY FUCKING ANCESTORS migrated across the land bridge and settled here where there were no humans. So that theory is absolutely idiotic. Get your history straight.

The people that want to slam the boarders shut are using fallacies in thinking and giving statisticians absolute hemorrhages by quoting stats that aren't anywhere near verifiable or statistically viable. America took in roughly 70,000 or so refugees in 2015. Most of those were from the following places according to the American Immigration Council:

"Over one-third of all refugee arrivals (35.1 percent, or 24,579) in FY 2015 came from the Near East/South Asia—a region that includes Iraq, Iran, Bhutan, and Afghanistan. Another third of all refugee arrivals (32.1 percent, or 22,472) in FY 2015 came from Africa. Over a quarter of all refugee arrivals (26.4 percent, or 18,469) in FY 2015 came from East Asia — a region that includes China, Vietnam, and Indonesia."

How much terrorism did we have from those folks? Little to none. I'm sure some were criminals or ended up in the criminal system. It makes sense that some did. But I'm too frustrated to look up those stats right now.

My point is simple.

We have the room. We also have the jobs and opportunities especially if people are willing to work hard. I'm not advocating hand outs after people get settled. But I am suggesting we can make something work. I don't want to see any more Syrian children drowned on the shores of Turkey just like I don't want to see Cuban nationals drowned on Florida's coast. But there are legal ways into this country. The United States is huge. And if people come into this country with legal status (be that by immigration or refugee status), why the hell not? I'd rather work with someone who WANTS to be here but wasn't born here than support someone who was born here and doesn't want to work and instead acts entitled.

Then people bring up homelessness, vets, and homeless vets. Seriously? Are you actually comparing apples and oranges and expecting us to think the argument valid? One is not the same as the other. Homelessness is a whole different situation here in the US, and a situation that's been ongoing since our country was founded. Homelessness here in the US involves poverty, eroding work opportunities, declines in public assistance, lack of affordable housing, lack of affordable health care, domestic violence, mental illness and addiction disorders. This is not a war torn destroyed country soaked in visible blood.

Refugees are defined as a people who have been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. How can you even remotely compare the homeless and refugees? You can't. I can't. No one can.

But by all the Gods and all the religions and all the people out there... it seems to me that no one has room in their hearts for logic and compassion to blend with fact and stop this idiotic bickering long enough for the world to come together and deal with this particular situation so we don't have 4.4 million Syrians (the actual number that has registered with the UN High Commission of Refugees as refugees - all that are accounted for from the 11 million who are thought to have DIED or FLED the civil war there) displaced outside of their home country without shelter heading into winter. Maybe if we stop knee-jerking and start thinking practical solutions we can stop seeing reporters plastering pictures of drowned children and ruined cities and camps that stretch from horizon to horizon that look like nothing more than a cesspool of misery.

You can't take the 'not my problem' stance on this one. It is your problem. This is going to touch us all in one way or another. Economically, socially, and decidedly morally. And the way the world reacts is going to be telling on all of us. This could have been any number of countries. Asian. African. Middle Eastern. Even American. Yes, even here.

If we all start deciding what the right thing is and do it, then humanity gets to take another big step forward. Don't let it be another instance in the history of the world and humanity as a whole for us to be less than we could be.

I'm not trying to tell anyone how to think on a topic. What I hope you are getting out of this rant instead is that I want people to start THINKING for themselves and not taking up idiotic arguments that have no place in this situation. Jumping on one band wagon or another just makes you a herd animal. We aren't prey animals inherently. We only become a herd when we get too lazy to investigate, ask questions, look at facts, then think things through and finally come up with a stance we can defend. It's my hope that in thinking things through carefully everyone will start looking for a middle ground where everyone wins.

Postby Gossamer on December 3rd, 2015, 6:30 pm

I just wanted to post a quick update. Not everyone will see this here so I'll post it in RF too.

I'm making Sunday my designated Miz day to get things done. I have a lot going on this week with my unplanned schedule change at work and having to represent my work by driving a semi-truck in a local parade on Saturday. So my plan is to slowly work on the HD Catchup the rest of the week concluding that by Saturday evening and Sunday doing some Grading after posting the complete RF calendar for Winter AND a thread people can join into that's moderated. Crazy will ensue in that thread, but it will give you superpower pcs the chance to intro your gifts if you haven't already... so get your superpowers turned in stat. Not everyone's going to get approval, but I've liked a lot of what I've seen so far.

In my mind, the HD is completely updated and caught up. If your ticket is still outstanding its too many pages back and needs bumped. If its gone unanswered because its tagged Gillar or some other slightly inactive Founder or RS, then you need to consider probably tagging someone else or removing your specific tags.
