Svefra Questions

Postby Ssafirsotibones on September 16th, 2011, 5:04 pm

Okay, so I am currently working on making a Svefra character, but I have several things I am wondering on.

1(Money)-First, how does their lifestyle affect the cost of living?

They live mostly on the sea, and get their food from it, and do not use many things a city dweller would. They also tend to get by more by bartering.

So would this simply mean that they would have a lower ranking cost of living, or would they be able to live at a higher ranking level, at a lower cost. (similar to the way it works for squires and such in Syliras.)

So perhaps paying for a poor level, but living at a common one. Especially since food is so plentiful and easy for them to gather, having to spend lots of money to live just does not seem to go with their lifestyle.

And would they even have any income? Besides the obvious payment if they say bring in and sell a bunch of fish they caught, or if they are paid to ferry someone across the sea from one city to another, can they even be considered to have a job or any type of income for a season, to combat the costs of living which will eat away at their money saved, and put them in the negative?

2- This one is a bit more straightforward, what is the equipment mentioned that comes with a Casinor? It says for the starting package they "start with a small casinor and its equipment", but no mention of what this is is said anywere, except to say a mounted harpoon is not included.

I have seen several different things used for this, which seemed to make sense. This was one such set-

:An extra set of sails, a cast iron anchor, a large tarp, 100' of rope, a common lamp and some oil for it, a pair of torches, a blanket, a hammock, and a few barrels.

This was used as the equipment which came with a Casinor. So I suppose I ask is it alright to use this as part of his starting package, should anything be added or taken off? And should this be made official?

3- Wilderness survival?

I have seen many different things used for surviving on the sea, sea navigation, ship building/reparing, and wilderness survival.

So would it be more or less required to have this skill to survive as a Svefra? I see from the lore of Wilderness survival that one of the environment types is Sea. What would this even be considered, since it is so different from the other land environments.

And Also Svefra spend long periods of time away from civilization, whereas this skill says you must return to civilization in 7 days. Wheras the svefra can spend months at sea, going from water and along the coast line, setting down for bits on land to do whatever, and returning to the sea.

So what for wilderness survival's sake would be considered returning to civilization for a Svefra?

Going to shore? Returning to the pod? Would this then be translated as instead of 7 days in wilderness, they can last alone for 7 days away from the pod without help, before needing to return?

As that would actually make sense.

So those are my questions, looking to see some help on figuring these out, and possibly see what some Storyteller have to say on it.
Bones is a Constrictor Dhani. He likes to eat meat. He also has some speech problems.

When he speaks, a double s (ss) means a [th] sound, that he cannot say.

A triple s (sss) means just an [s], but it is extended in his speech.

1. Cost of living is the same for all pcs regardless of race and circumstance. Even if you get your food from the sea, you still need fishing line, hooks, bait, your boat repaired, your shoes replaced... its all the same just the circumstances change.

2. Equipment: :An extra set of sails, a cast iron anchor, a large tarp, 100' of rope, a common lamp and some oil for it, a pair of torches, a blanket, a hammock, and a few barrels. That's fine.

3. You can have whatever skills you want that makes sense for your PC and your PC's circumstances. Not all Svefra are on the sea. Not all Gingies are in WR. Things change and each PC is unique.

Svefra Questions

Well, I was meaning the sea faring svefra, ones that spend most of their time at sea. As obviously if one moved and lives no were near water, they would not really need any of those sea related skills.

Was more wondering how that would effect them in regard to wilderness survival, since that skill seems to be more geared towards land living, which is more common. Though it does say one of the environments for it is the sea. Though not really anything is said on it.

Also still wondering a bit on the first one, as it seems they would soon have a deficit of funds if they are having to pay this cost of living normally, but would not really have any steady job being possible. Though that is a good point on those such things they would have to pay for. I did not think of that.

Only thing I can think of for them to get money would be to fish and sell it at a port, or to get travelers to pay them for ferrying them form one city to another. Or simply being paid to carry cargo from one port to another.

Those seem more of a one time lump sum payment for each time done, than a actual steady job. What would be the range of pay common for doing such things I wonder?

And how would you go about getting jobs doing those such things? Just ask a AS for the city about it? I suppose that might work, though would obviously be a case by case thing, differing depending on the season, the distance, and other factors, and on what they are wanting done.

Though I do wonder how fast a Casinor can travel. It says they are pretty fast ships, though they stay by the coast, and would have to stop for fishing and to catch food, and making land occasionally. Which would also slow their speed...
