Xalet appreciated Harper's belief that there was at least some cerebral reason behind his words. A mage with a powerful force of will could be a powerful ally and weapon, just so long as they kept their desires in check when faced with the allure of the madness of magic. His Patron had always kept him away from magic, and for good reason, that type of taint within his already unsteady Souls would have presented more problems they they were potentially worth. The body was an amazing thing though, and legends had told of simple men whom had surpassed the limits of the mortal form simply through skill and training. These men and women were impressive enough to walk amongst even the Gods in the eyes of those they stood before.

"There's much to tell. She is a Sergeant, her name is Irine Braklin. She is decended from one of the very first families that founded Syliras, back before the entirety was all simply dangerous, untamed land. Almost all those within those families become Knights, or are affiliated with the Knights. Now, with the stregnth of our numbers the Knighthoood has progressed past Syliras, taking up outposts all over and furter securing the lands upon which we walk." he spoke, although he quickly found himself digressing. Reigning in his words he focused back upon his Patron, "The Sergeant has many talents. She is skilled in warfare, extremely so. She understands how to wield many weapons, including the weapons of her Konti people. She is also skilled in communication, and has discovered many secrets and solved many disputes through the power of her voice alone."

Of course that wasn't all. You did't get rank by simply doing your job, and the Sergeant had another important and invaluable abilities, "She is also twice marked by the God of healing, and has powerful herbal knowledge to support her supernatural healing abilities. Priskil has also taken interest in her." The way Xalet spoke of his Patron, he was undeniably proud to have her being the one to order him about.

"To become a Knight you must first become a squire. After one proves themselves to have not only the integrity and honor, but also the skill and knowledge to become a Knight, they must undergo a quest. The task is always different, and they're very secretive about them. Once the quest is passed, one has their Knighting ceremony and is bestoweed their weapon, armor, and horse and obtain their first assignments." Becoming a Knight sounded involved, and it was, understandibly. A knight had several great benefits by the power of Syliras, and the position was not to be taken lightly. Knights were highly trained and carried the best equipment. "But that is all, one does not need money or station to start upon the path, just the desire. There is a recruitment office where one applies and is interviewed by a Knight. Some move through their squirehood very quickly based upon their skills. There are many different specialist Knights, such as Mage Knights. Were you interested in becoming one?"

Harper listened attentively as Xalet talked about his Patron, Irine, and explained the different steps of becoming a Knight. It piqued her interests when he mention that there were such things as Mage Knights. Other people interested in magic as she is? She had heard rumors of places that had huge citadels of wizards, completely obsessed with unlocking the secrets of magic, and she longed to visit such places, but knew that she never would.

Aye, she had encountered quite a few people in her life, even those that shared her love for magic, but she never stuck around in one place long enough to get to personally train or study with any of them.

"Your Patron sounds like a mighty-fine woman. A strong woman, and I think that's what I leader needs to be," Harper replied. The life of the Knight .. It was appealing, and Harper couldn't deny it. Having something to protect, people to protect... It all seemed like a life she would like to lead.

But what about her other plans? There were many things that Harper still wanted to do, places she wanted to visit and explore. She couldn't do those things if she was tied down by the Knights. She loved her freedom. And what of her magics? Harper knew of Syliras' strict rules against summoning...and she wanted to obtain herself a familiar. How could she do that in a city like Syliras? She couldn't. Was she willing to give all of that up?

"Aye, I will admit that becoming a Knight is very tempting. It sounds like a respected and rewarding life, but I am not so sure that I am the one right for the job." Harper paused and bit her lip. "I think I might be seen as dangerous to the other Knights. And there are still so many places I want to go and things I want to see. There are even magics I would like to explore, ones that I cannot explore in the city of Syliras. It complicates everything." She looked up at Xalet. He looked so strong in his armor, carrying his weapon with pride. How could Harper ever amount to that? She was a naturally weak person, even more so because of her Leeching habits. How could she ever keep up with the other Knights?

"I doubt myself too much," She said after a long while. And it was the truth.
"Rather die hard than die hallow."

"Maybe, maybe not." Xalet rationalized. He recognized not everyone was prepared for a Knight's life, but sometimes he believed there was some level of ignorance for people not completely understanding just how much the Knights did. The Knights weren't simply in Syliras, they were everywhere. Some on the road, some in other cities, some on the sea. The life of a Knight could take you anywhere, but there was more to it then that. It was a lifestyle, and one that had very little flexibility when it came to ones conviction and integrity, "The life of a Knight is not easy. Certainly there are rules, regulations, and requirements." Oh did Xalet know of those requirements all too well. They were more often than not the things in his way, keeping him from becoming a Knight. As far as the squire knew, when he was skilled enough, someone with many marks on their armor would come for him, and thus would begin his Knighting quest. If only he knew the truth.

"Dangerous. Yes, that is true enough. Of course..." he began to mention, shifting his armor slightly. His insides were beginning to hurt, perhaps he should go and have them checked, he determined to himself. Hopefully he just pulled a few muscles, strained a few ligaments, that would be a detriment if something was broken and he had to go to his Patron begging for her healing touch. "...ahem, excuse me. As I was saying, of course no matter where you go, you will be seen as dangerous. This is the life of those who practice magic, because you ARE dangerous. Magic is dangerous by it's very nature. But...the Mage Knights can teach a person many things, including even finer control, discipline, and other arts. The Knights travel all over as well, far away from the walls of Syliras. There are those who'd rather remain close to home, and there are those who would see the world, I believe there's room for both types of people."

The squire would never admit it openly, not as open as Harper, but he knew all about doubt as well. It was a way of life when a second Soul lived inside of you. You doubted everything, if you could keep that Soul in life, if you could remain dominant, if people would ever see you in the same way after seeing that Soul. "Doubt...yes. Sometimes doubt helps to keep us in check as well. In the end, it's up to you. While a squire, if you find the life not to your liking, you can always resign. It's not so easy once you've been fully Knighted, of course. That's the point of squirehood though, to allow people to determine if this is the life for them, and if their skills and demeanor fit the lifestyle." Xalet said as he began gathering up his things. It was time for him to get moving on and process the things he had learned about these magical arts. One day he would figure it out, the counter for magic. Until then, "I should get heading back. I hope you find what it is you want. Don't doubt yourself too much, it will stunt your growth. You've more talent than many many others...but no matter where you go a life of magic is not easy. All you can ask is to make it a rewarding one."

OOCThis feels like a good stopping point, we can always interact again, of course!

Harper smiled kindly at Xalet. His words reassured her, letting her know that she wasn't alone in her feeling of doubt. Knowing that him, a squire, felt the same feelings that she did .. it helped her in some way.

"I suppose you are right, about magic being dangerous. It is, and I understand that. But it helps me to know that there are other mages here in the city that are Knights. I think I might want to seek them out, and ask them questions. If that is possible, I mean. It would be beneficial to me, I think. And you've made me interested in becoming a Knight. I know that it isn't a decision I should rush into, but .. maybe I would be good at it? Maybe I could actually help people instead of hurt. I could do good with my life."

Harper realized that she should probably be heading back to the city also; it was getting a little late.

"Aye, I think it's high-time we went back now. Thank you for the sparring lesson, it was quite interesting, to say the least. And thank you for the kind words," She said as she bowed, a sign of respect and courtesy. "You have helped me in more ways than one. I believe we will see each other again, Xalet. I hope we do, anyway. I enjoy your company." Harper smiled again, happy that she met someone who understood her and was kind to her. "I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. May the gods watch over you."

OOCWell this thread went on a lot longer than it should have because of my absence, but I'm glad we finished it. :3 It was so awesome threading with you, and I hope we can do it again. Harp might end up a squire soon just like Xalet, so they might run into each other on the training field at one point~
