A lawless town of anarchists, built on the ruins of an ancient mining city. [Lore]
Zandelia’s walk to the Pig’s Foot Tavern had been a slow one, one filled with many musings and an attempt to shake off the aches still emanating from her shoulder, neck and head. They were dulled by the cold air of the night, her senses clearing somewhat with every lung-full of fetid Sunberthian air. She kept her cloak around her and trudged along, this time making sure to keep her wits fully about her and her ears keenly attuned to her surroundings. She was not about to fall prey to yet another attack this evening, having to deal with two annoyances more than enough for her temper. Her circuitous route, however fortifying as it was, came to an end eventually as she pushed the tavern door open – to a large amount of consternation and grumbling from the patrons – and closed it behind her.
As filled with refuse as ever she thought to herself, well aware still of what happened the last time she had been at the Pig’s Foot. A brawl, and one which had gained her some small standing with the patrons – evidenced by the fact that a few nodded at her as she passed them on her way to the bar.
The tavern owner looked at her, flicking his eyes to the bruising that had begun to creep across her neck and jaw before shrugging and shuffling off to deal with some order or another – leaving the barmaid to tend to Zandelia and her parched mouth. She smiled at the woman, young and pretty as she was – and probably worth a bit of a tumble if she had been that far inclined to try her hand at seduction. However, the evening’s events had sapped her strength and so she merely smiled, nodded and called her over.
“Just the one ale please, and try to give a clean cup girl. I don’t want to catch something from the cup as well as the ale” she stated simply, expecting quick and diligent service and getting it to the letter.
Then her evening took another unexpected twist and she could not help but growl inwardly to herself as she knew that things might just get that little bit worse. The lad, the boy whom had attacked he this evening – he had arrived and brazenly as he liked asked for what she was drinknig to be added to Zandelia’s bill. Zandelia merely shook her head once at the situation before looking into the barmaids pretty blue eyes and nodding the acceptance to her. As the man’s drink was fetched Zandelia took a seat, making sure the sole of her foot was resting upon the seat of the chair next to her, ready to draw her dagger if the slightest hint of betrayal was sensed.
“My name is Zandelia and that’s all you need to know boy. Now, why don’t you tell me yours, and tell me why the petching hell you followed me here – and if you’ve come to renege upon letting me go then you’ll have a hard time trying your hand at screwing me over in here” she told him firmly, taking a sip of her watery ale and setting the clay cup down upon the table in a deliberate manner.
“As it is, I would be well within my rights just to open up another hole in you right now. The only thing stopping me is the fact I’ve shed enough blood tonight and that weapons are rarely used in here and smiled upon,” she continued as she looked him in the eyes in a manner that suggested that attitude might not matter if she was pushed enough, “so I would advise you just drink your free ale and talk. And that is all you do” she finished, the silence between them palpable with tension.
The girls bluntness surprised him. That was an interesting quality, one that could be used by him at a later date. Or maybe it only appeared when someone hit them with a chair. For some reason people’s attitude towards you change when you bonk them on their noggin with a piece of wood. “I thought I was the one asking the questions here. But, very well. I will do as you wish.” By complying with her wishes he was showing himself as fair.
The drinks arrived just then and Darik let his sit there. He loved other people wasting money for no good reason. It brought joy to his heart. Why? I don’t even know, why not ask Darik? “My name is…Darik.” He told the truth because she had been completely honest with hers. Or had she? Zandelia did sound like a name someone would make up on the spot. ”Now answer me this, why would I let you loot the man then get revenge?” He held up his hand intending to silence the women. It was a rhetorical question, not one to be filled with a wisecrack.
”Just think about that, you obviously have a purpose. Or I am just a complete utter crazy wacko. He gave a wide grin. ”That too.” Now for the meat of the matter. ”Now for your purpose, it’s a contract of sorts. The contract won’t happen immediately but I will contact you some time in the future. Also, Zandelia” He let the name roll of his tongue slowly so he wouldn’t forget it in the future. “I suggest you start running, because you’ll need it.”
He looked up as if a god was calling him. “I got to go…do some other business. Bye Zandelia.” He picked up the beer mug she had bought for him with him. As he passed by one of the tables he handed the mug to a random person. “Here ya go, on the house.” With that last weird look from the man’s companion’s, Darik exited the bar.
He was going to barf. God, the taste of “civilized talking’ hung sourly on his lips. Yet people always reacted better to that than Darik’s slang. It was worth it though, he had found the first member of his plan. She wasn’t entirely trustworthy, but Darik figured she would do. It was their first meeting but he figured she could handle herself in sticky situations. Perfect for his plan.
Now, he just needed to find the second. He would take his time of course, there was no need to rush these kind of things. He doubted any other would try to assassinate Goldfinger. Not even psychopaths would go into the gated community kill Goldfinger then bring his corpse out. Darik was worse than a psychopath.
My posts will be very rare for awhile. Lacrosse season started, track has been going on , mascot tryouts in two weeks, and finally I am trying to do well in school. I can't really apologize for my absence, because I am enjoying doing all these activities.
As Zandelia listened to the boy prattle on about this and that she could barely believe what she was hearing, and her anger was only partially tempered and kept under control – a dangerous situation at the best of times but certainly not whilst she was trying to read him in as much detail as possible. It was a skill she had been told that she had by a travelling magic-user – the talent of Auristics. She rarely used it, preferring to rely upon her own intuition and thought processes to come to conclusions, however this evening she was tired already, and whilst she knew that the effort expended would cost her more energy she thought it prudent to at least try this time. The boy was far to much of an annoyance to her as it was.
As much information as possible is helpful she thought to herself as she honed her gaze, focused her attention upon his form.
It was a strange process really, one which many thought her mad for when she tried to complete it without their knowing. She could not do it by look at him so much as through him. It was a gaze that tried to affix itself to his very essence rather than his person, that tried to see the air around him then the boy himself. Her gaze became distant, probably mistaken for deep thought by the lad, as she began her probing.
She could sense little from him, it proved, little but a few pulses of strong emotion. There was a few there, perhaps a half-a-dozen. She could not separate them all out from one another, their natures and colours too inter-twined and blurred. Still, there were a couple that pulsed too strongly to not pinpoint and read without much doubt to be left as to their nature. She withdrew the information, letting her gaze shared ever so slowly, and brought her attention back to bare upon the man – Darik she seemed to drag from her now sluggish mind as her ears informed her of what she had been unable to process before.
Lust. Lust and distaste. Strange was all she could get her mind to function around for a few minutes.
She sat there, slumped in her chair as if she were cross-eyed drunk and about to vomit. In reality she had used up what little resources her body had remaining to it in her auristic probing of Darik’s character. She now was feeling the consequences – over ‘overgiving’ she had been told all those months ago now. Her vision was blurred and her muscles did not want to move faster than a pointlessly slow crawl. She was numb too, her skin having lost its ability to sense even the most basic of tactile sensations for the moment. As such, she was forced to stay where she was, slumped and helpless for the next hour or so as her body slowly brought itself back out of its dangerously deep reverie.
“I need to sleep” she whispered to herself, using the last of her resources to heave herself out of the chair, stumble to the counter and pay for a room.
The barmaid helped her up the stairs and into the small cot she had been over-charged for before black unconsciousness finally stole her from the world and began to wevae the healing process upon her recumbent form.
