[FLASHBACK] Homework Assignment

Postby Sheva on October 11th, 2011, 6:21 pm

31st Fall 510 AV

It was mid-afternoon in Zeltiva, a beautiful day it was. A gentle breeze flowing through the streets and windows, not too hot or too cold. The sounds of footsteps, voices and life filled the atmosphere today. Meanwhile, in a small house in the outer, poorer part of the town a young kelvic girl sat at a desk hard at work.
"Practice makes perfect." she mimicked the old man saying. The girl had hair as white as snow along with fair skin. She sat their hard at work with the homework assignment she had been given for the day. "Twenty well drawn glyphs before I get home tonight." the old man had told her, but when Sheva tried to protest he simply smiled at her with that weak, wise old smile of his. And so, Sheva had been guilted into this homework assignment. The old man was the closest thing she had to a relative or friend, he took her with open hands and was teaching her both Reimancy and Glyphing, which he was more than qualified to do. Her Reimancy initiation had been a terrible experience, but she had no time to think about that at the moment. She drew each glyph slowly, meticulously drawing each line and curve, careful as to not make any mistakes. Sheva was a novice at Glyphing and therefore it took her several minutes to create one adequate glyph, along with immense amounts of concentration. She had been working for about three hours now and was on the twelfth glyph. She understood why the old man forced her to work so hard at her magic. Magic was dangerous especially in the hands of the inexperienced and unintelligent, but even with though she knew this she still wanted to complain. She had been concentrating for way too long now, she touched the twelfth glyph closing her eyes and charging it with the appropriate amounts of djed. There was a slight purple glow as the glyph gave a relieving glow of confirmance before dimming once more, this glow meant that the glyph had been succesfully charged and had sealed away the djed. Sheva let loose a giant exhale of relief as she jumped up from the desk and ran outside, grabbing her cheap longbow and a quiver of arrows in the process. They lived on the outskirts of Zeltiva, people here were poor, but had shelter and food every night so life was good enough. Sheva strolled down the short road towards the edge of the forest, she liked the wilderness no doubt a result of being a kelvic. The forest made her feel calm and at piece, and since she had taken up archery as a hobby she could often be found near the forest firing arrows at a tree from different distances. She was getting quite good at it, now able to atleast hit the target from about 50 feet away. She wouldn't hit the bullseye, but for now just hitting the target was good enough. "It's so relaxing here." she said calmly as she took a deep breath and exhaled. "Okay time for some kick-butt shooting." she said excitedly. She had a taken up archery after she found the old longbow in the old mans house. She had been cleaning the house and stumbled apon a rather large chest, and inside she found the longbow laying amongst a pile of useless garbage. The old man told her she was welcome to have it and she excitedly began practicing. She was actually quite an enthusiastic person, always happy to learn new things and skills. She looked around making sure there was no one near the target before taking several steps away from the tree. After she had reached a stick which she had used to mark the fifty foot distance from the tree she turned around raising the bow. Her beautiful blue feline eyes darted between the target and the bow as she grabbed an arrow and ligned it up. She pulled tightly focusing on the target before she gently released the arrow. The arrow flew swiftly through the air, rushing toward the target tree with a subtle wooshing sound. The arrow hit the target less than a foot from the bullseye. "Thats was SO close!" she exclaimed excitedly with a slight smile. She ligned up another arrow as once again her feline eyes locked onto the target. She pulled tightly yet again then after a few seconds released. The arrow flew through the air once again but this time hit more than a foot from the bullseye. Sheva let out a tiny frustrated growl before loading up yet another arrow. She ligned up the arrow, aimed, pulled tight and released. She began to repeat this process over and over again, pulling the arrows out of the tree after every tenth arrow. A few hours later the sun was setting, Sheva had shot a total of about 130 arrows over the hours all of them hitting the target but none hitting the bullseye. It was time to go, but Sheva refused to leave, determined to hit the bullseye. "Okay last shot, come on kitty cat! You can do this!" she said cutely to herself. Sheva often called herself kitty cat when she was alone. Slowly she grabbed an arrow and ligned it up, concentrating on the bullseye. She took aim making sure she would be on target this time. After about 2 minutes, when she was absolutely sure her aim was perfect she began to pull on the string tightly. The longbow creaked in protest at being pulled to such an extent. "Okay, here goes something!" she said calmy as slowly she took a breath and then even more slowly she exhaled it. As she exhaled she let loose the arrow. The arrow flew through the air, the sound of it rushing through the wind toward the target clearly audible although quite subtle. The arrow hit the bullseye with a crippling force. Sheva jumped up and down joyously as she ran toward the tree. "Bullseye! Wooohoo! Kitty POWER!" she shouted happily as a wave of pride and accomplishment rushed over her. It was now completely dark, Sheva only noticing this now after concentrating so hard on hitting the bullseye. She gave the arrow a hard tug, ripping it from the tree. Happily she hurried back toward the town and her home. It was not safe to be out this late, thieves, slavers and other menaces were often found at these times, although the victims never went out seeking them. She returned home and began lighting the many candles in the small home. She would light them by using her Reimancy, exerting miniscule amounts of liquid djed onto each candle wick before igniting the djed, lighting the house with the gentle glow of the candles. After the candles she moved on to the fire place, she enjoyed lighting the fire place as it was good practice for her. Holding her hands out as if begging, Sheva focused on her djed. She excretes small amounts of liquid djed at a steady rate. The djed floating gently from her fingertips and gathering several inches above her hands in a glistening ball of djed. Then slowly walking nearer to the fire place Sheva holds out her palms pointing them toward the fire place, the ball of djed following, suspended inches from her palms. Then with a flash she ignites the outer part of the djed ball so that there is now a flaming ball of fire floating infront of her hands. Then in the next second the ball of liquid djed is sprayed toward the fireplace creating a tiny flamethrower effect. Theres a gentle roar as the fire ignites the wood and the warmth of the fire begins to be felt throughout the house. Sheva smiles at the fire she had just made and sits back down at the desk. "Okay, eight more glyphs and I'm done." she says, now relaxed after her archery and reimancy. Slowly she begins to repeat the process of creating a glyph. Carefully drawing it, slowly and meticulously and then charging it with the appropriate amount of djed so that it gives that re-assuring glow of successful completion, each glyph taking several minutes. Two hours later Sheva was now exhausted from her day and the exhausting task of creating twenty adequate glyphs on various book sized wooden tiles. "Okay only one more to go. The old man should be home anytime soon." she said with a yawn. Slowly she began to draw the focus glyph, carefully drawing each line and curve. Every line and curve was important and therefore one incorrect line or curve could result in a failed attempt, or worse. She finished the drawing of the glyph and gently touched it, slowly releasing her djed into it. The djed flowed from her finger into the glyph, it looked as though it was a dried out lake being filled with glistening purple water. The djed flowed from her finger into the glyph, slowly spreading along the lines she had drawn. She removed her finger after filling the correct amount of djed and waited hopefully. Sure enough, the glyph released its confirming glow, the djed had been successfully sealed and the glyph successfully created. "Yay! Your finally done kitty cat! And just in time too." she says with relief as she gets up from her desk and stretches her exhausted limbs, as a second later the old man walks in.

The end.

Notes: Hey, before you can add these points to your CS you will need to timestamp the date at the start of the thread. "About a year ago" does not work. If you need a refresher here is the article for it.

Also make sure to break up your posts into paragraphes with a space inbetween for easier reading, not really a rule but something that makes it easier for us to grade.

Good first thread. :) Hoping to see longer threads in the future and get to know you a bit more.

One last note: When using magic, as a novice, it is easy to overgive. Doesn't have to be anything major but it is always a good idea and keep in mind how much effort it takes to use magic for several hours at a time.

Keep up the great work hon!
