Glyph's and paper... lots of it (hadrian)

Postby Coren on November 6th, 2011, 11:33 pm

Fall 511 79th

Afternoon

Just like was usual for coren he was sitting behind the desk, bored out of his mind as he every so often stared at the doors right in front of him. It was going to be one of those boring day's where his job consisted of sitting behind the desk and staring at a door for bell's at a time. After a few moments of indecision he quickly checked his surroundings for any sign that jack was around, not wanting to be caught not doing his job, even if that job was at the moment doing nothing at all.

After not having found a sign of his colleague he reached in his robe and pulled out the blank book he used for practicing his glyph's in and pushed some of the stuff on his desk to make some room, dropping it on the table and flipping towards the first empty page he could find in it. Feeling slightly guilty as after only a few pages with sloppy and badly drawn sigils and glyph's he already came to an end. He really needed to stop focusing so much on practicing projection and his shielding and stop neglecting his glyphing.

He let out a small sigh as he screwed the lid of the vial of ink, beginning to think how he would begin to piece together the glyph for the purpose he wanted. A simple storage glyph for a magical effect. If he could remember it right, a storage glyph that simple consisted from a focus to store the effect, a barrier to keep the effect in the focus afterward and a trigger to unleash the effect.

Dipping the quill into the ink he carefully began drawing a decently sized circle in the middle of the page, taking care to make the circle not to big. Since he had a lot of practice drawing focus glyph's the circle was fairly decent, but it still took quite a bit of time to draw it. After the circle was done, coren marked eight different points on the circle's border with more or less the same space in between and connected them, forming an empty octagon whose corners touched the circle. When that was done he drew a single line from each corner to the center of the octagon, letting the eight lines meet there. When the focus part of the sigil was finally done carefully inspected the glyph on any faults that would make the thing dangerously unstable if he actually put any magic in it.
Aside from a few accidental smudges he didn't find any serious flaw in it. So he continued towards the next step.

Once again he had to draw a circle, this time a larger one and around the focusing glyph making sure it was completely closed, it was supposed to contain the djed in the focus and he didn't want it getting out and does who knows what just because he was a bit sloppy. When he had draw the circle he carefully began writing down a string of strange runes on the outside of the circles border, trying to write them down exactly as his teacher showed him years ago. Even going to check a few times on his older tries to see more or less how they should have looked, just to be sure.

The entire time as coren was working on his sigil he didn't pay any attention to what was going on and he was lucky his boss or jack didn't come and check on him and see what he was doing, to bad somebody was about to find out he wasn't exactly exactly doing his job.

Glyph's and paper... lots of it (hadrian)

Postby Hadrian on November 17th, 2011, 5:19 am

Hadrian didn't mean to be an elitist, but he had traveled a good portion of this half of the continent, studied at the esteemed University of Zeltiva, been to Sahova and worked with the highly erudite Nuit (and some still living folk), and had grown up with wealth, which included a decent library of books, the which were still precious in a post-apocalyptic world. So he was not impressed by the library of Avanthal, despite the fact that it was more than enough for its populace. But not being impressed did not mean he wouldn't spend a deal of time there, researching and preparing for experiments and advances as he always did.

Hadn't he told Atelius in Ravok that his mind kept marching, never satisfied, but ever more alive with each discovery or connection made?

All the same, he had a stack of books and a small carrel in which to read them. They ranged in topics: a slim volume on Familiary that he had not yet read; a tome on gemology and jewelcrafting; Vantha poetry; the history of Avanthal; calligraphy.

His agile mind had him turning a page in one, reading for a few minutes, then switching to another with no apparent rhyme or reason for his tangents. But this was how he did research, and occasionally he would scratch down a few notes on a piece of parchment, or draw a sketch. The logic of his note-taking was also his own personal brand of cryptography. Who could follow the way his mind worked? The sketches took the form of plans for gadgets that he could Animate, accompanied by easy glyphs, or enough to hint at what the more complicated sigils might entail.

Glyph's and paper... lots of it (hadrian)

Postby Coren on December 1st, 2011, 6:13 pm

The chimes slowly passed as coren continued to practice his glyph's. Slowly but surely filling up the next page or two. However, no matter how much the fledgling mage wanted to continue practicing he still had to do some kind of work. Felix already had threatenend to inform his parents on his work ethic a few times and he really was getting a feeling that the old man's patience was nearly gone and he didn't want to be the cause of the old man getting a heart attack because of stress.
So he blew on his handywork for one more time, making sure the ink was dry, before closing the book, put it back in the pocket of his robe and grabbed a small stack of books that he still needed to put back on their shelves.

Coren made his way through the shelves and towards the places where the books belonged with practiced ease, a full season of working experience in the library had rammed the basic layout of the library in his brain. After he had finished putting away the books he began checking if nobody left any books on the reading table's. To his surprise he found a man bend over a few books and taking some kind of notes. Coren softened his step somewhat and made its way towards the man. Hoping to catch the man of guard enough to startle him somewhat. Sure the idea was a bit childish, but he had been cooped up in the library for almost an entire day already, with not many distractions aside his magic practice or reading a few books, So he thought he deserved a few cheap laugh's. Besides showing up behind people from what seemed out of nowhere alway's enforced the idea that the people from the library alway's where watching. And that kept those few unruly queit with a lot less hassle on his part.

As coren got close enough to the man's though he noticed a few sigil's on his notes that he immediately recognised as glyphing. It seemed this man knew at least a little bit about magic if he knew about glyphing. Since it was usually taken after they learned another discipline.
“Hello sir.” Coren piped up. Making sure to keep his voice civil and polite. He didn't know how insane this man was thanks to overgiving and he didn't want to find out by getting blasted in the face with a ball of fire or something like that.
“You mind if I take a seat here? My name is coren by the way.” He offered a hand towards the man.

Postby Hadrian on December 5th, 2011, 7:12 am

Hadrian was no stranger to libraries, and he looked up with bright chlorine blue eyes at the strangely attired man. He looked Vantha from what Hadrian could see, sensing that familiar cold brilliance that he associated with Morwen's gnosis ever since Kye had first shown his to him back in Syliras. The high sides of his carrel desk gave him a little privacy, but it was far from complete. The desk next to him was empty and he nodded toward it.

"The library would seem to encourage us to do so," he said, setting his notes aside and pulling out the book on gemstones. He was hoping to find a jewelcrafter among the holds who might teach him a thing or two.

"I'm Hadrian," he added quietly out of respect for the setting.

“Well nice to meet you hadrian.” Coren said politly in the best common he could manage as he sat down on the desk next to hadiran, leaning a bit back in his chair to make himself as comfortable as possible on the wooden chair.
“Yes, felix does put reading desks together, saves place he say's. I think he just wants to keep an easy eye on the people visiting the library. Less places they can read, so less places he has to check.” Coren mentioned before he gave a glance at the small pile of books.
“So hadrian, what those books you are studying about?” Coren said, curiosity easily audible in his voice.

oocAlso one note I forgot about, if you want to find a book about magic in this library you have to have permission from the storryteller about it since it has a limited selection of books. So either we just ignore the book, we get permission from cheshire or we have it be a poorly written volume with quite a lot of mistakes. Sorry bout that ^^;

OOCI will get permission from Cheshire as soon as I see her online, but I'm pretty sure she won't mind as we've talked about Hadrian possibly negotiating a familiar while in Avanthal.

Hadrian nodded politely, not yet sure if it was nice to meet the partially obscured man. It seemed insincere to prejudge the value and enjoyment of any social encounter, even if many thought it polite to pretend. He glanced toward where the librarian usually sat, then nodded to Coren.

"The average librarian is a stickler for order and the preservation of his or her materials. They can get quite... passionate... if they believe someone is a threat to their little kingdoms. But generally if they recognize a kindred spirit, they will develop a rapport and be more trusting." He looked down at his books, his notes. "Some on gems. Some on Avanthal. Trying to figure out what I should do while I'm here."

Glyph's and paper... lots of it (hadrian)

Coren silently snickered at hadrian's description of the average librarian and nodded. “That does sound like felix in a nutshell. Well if you leave out the becoming more thrusting part at least, I don't think he completely trusts me to put the books back where they belong and I have been working here for almost an entire season!” As soon as coren's words left his mouth he quickly checked over his shoulder though, hoping that Felix wasn't around as he said it. Easing back into his chair as he saw the coast was clear.
Coren just tilted his head a little bit, trying to get a better look at the book of gems hadrian was talking about.

“Oh your an artist or jeweler of some kind? If you are. Visit the skyglows or iceglazes. The skyglows are the artists of avanthal, the iceglazes the builders and they know their earth types. Also what are the other books about?” Coren asked with intrest, “And what are those strange looking glyph's about? They some alphabet of another language?” Coren asked, trying to play the fool and keep the man off his guard. It was easier to try and find stuff out from somebody who thought you where an idiot.

"Ah," he said, nodding, though Master Felix had not seemed too put out by Hadrian's presence, nor his use of the collection. It didn't seem prudent to bring it up as it might be a sore spot for Coren and Hadrian was not in the habit of deliberately making enemies or rivals. They just sort of happened sometimes.

"I suppose I'm a dabbler in handicrafts," he said. "I would like to learn jewelcrafting, but I don't know anyone in the Holds, really. I'm new to Avanthal, so I have been dealing mostly with the Icewatch. Some of them seem to like me well enough, but others seem distrustful of strangers, which is probably for the best so far as your security goes, but..." He shrugged. After spending a season in Ravok engaging in espionage and terrorism, he really couldn't judge the Icewatch too harshly, especially when some of them seemed to have severe mental and emotional issues to work through. It was a good thing he wasn't an Azenth or he would be compelled to bring those hidden things into the light. As it was, he still occasionally felt the urge to hypnotize a few secrets out of people, to remove blockages that were making them ill.

"Ah, the glyphs... Well, some of them are a bit of cryptography, just writing notes in Nader-canoch so not as many people can read them. The others are magical in nature." The last was said delicately. He didn't want Coren to react as Belgar had, all rage and teeth and claws. Hadrian had not had the presence of mind to set up barriers to protect himself from violence in the middle of the library.

Glyph's and paper... lots of it (hadrian)

Postby Coren on December 11th, 2011, 1:08 am

As hadrian was speaking coren tried to get another look at the man's glyph's trying to see if there was anything he could recognize or learn from the arrangements in the glyph's structures. Coren's eyes slowly changing from its sea green color towards a dull brown when aside off the fact they looked slightly different from his used glyphs and they where a lot more readable he didn't see anything different from his own set of glyph's. As hadrian began to explain what the glyph's where. Coren just gave an enthusastic nod at hadrian's explenation.

“Ah magic, always have been intrested in those arts to be honest. Never found anybody in this city able to teach me, though” Coren said. “But if you want to learn more about crafting I could point you towards some family of mine, there are a few that would like teaching a beginning artist more about the art.” His small bout of dissapointment was swiftly swept away and his eyes once again changed color to reflex that.
“So if you want I wouldn't mind introducing you to some people that would want to teach you. Saves you from interacting with the more distrusting members of the icewatch too.” Coren grinned underneath his mask as he waited for hadrian's answer, this was the one time there was another mage that sounded as he knew what he was doing and he was meeting him without anybody that could let it slip to his parents that he was intrested in magic. No way in morwen's name was he going to let that man slip away before he had a good grasp on what he could and maybe learned something from him on the way.

"Many are interested," he agreed, "few disciplined enough to manage much." He did not say this to be unfriendly or condescending, but it was true in his experience. So many people wanted an easy way out of things as if magic did not demand a higher price than doing a thing with the sweat of one's brow. He could speak of the pain of initiation in reimancy and projection, but to no avail. He could warn of the corrupting whispers of one's own addicted mind. He could find a Leecher in the last stages of bodily decay and show a person the price of magic, but there would always be seekers. Some of them were even honest with themselves enough that they could be honest with the power they courted, and they might survive.

"I would, of course, be happy to learn from a jeweler of the Iceglaze Hold, but I have a strange and troubling habit of not trusting a man in a mask." He smile was faint, more mocking of himself than Coren. But there were those who said the eyes were the portals to the soul, and Hadrian could certainly endart his will through them with a clever twist of hypnotic power.

He considered it, in fact, nudging Coren along with conversation and the odd bit of suggestion, carefully inserting thoughts and ideas until he revealed what was under the mask. It was strange; most Vantha seemed only too open with their thoughts and feelings, warm people in a cold clime. But not this one.

Hadrian had learned to be cautious of those in power. There were wizards trained in one-on-one relationships who soon lost their lives to their students, who wanted power more than wisdom. This had been known to happen even among the classically trained academician-wizards of Zeltiva's renowned University.
