„If you tried to kill me“, Veldrys replied. „I would try to kill you, and truth to be told, I wouldn’t even feel particularly guilty. It’s not murder if you defend your own life. But it’s not as simple as that. My people aren’t being attacked, Xelhes, at least not from the outside. The Valterrian changed them. They have become their own worst enemy. Our children, our children that are supposed to be our future, kill us, our women die giving birth, and the only way to stop it is to sacrifice somebody else instead. That’s the problem, Xelhes. The people that we hurt have never done anything to deserve it. I’ve tried to find a way around it. I’ve dedicated my life to it, but so far I have been unable to find an alternative. It’s the only way for us to survive, and there is nothing else we can do, but still ... it shouldn’t be this way ...“
„Maybe you are right, and the old world wasn’t truly lost“, he murmurred. „Maybe we can reclaim whatever is left of our old lives. Did you know that this is why I came to Denval? It was isolated for a long time after the Valterrian. I thought that I would be able to reconstruct the old world here, that I might even be able to find a solution to my people’s problems.“ Looking back it seemed naive. He had been marked by a god and received a prophecy, but he was no closer to finding a cure than he had been a year ago.
„There is a limit to what two individuals can do“, he agreed. „But on the other hand one woman’s death and one man’s revenge were responsible for the Valterrian and countless deaths, so why can’t the two of us save a small city? Maybe we should just be hopelessly optimistic and assume the best. It’s certainly better than the alternative.“ A somewhat bitter laughter escaped his lips. „I just said that my offer still stands“, he reminded Xelhes. „We can meet as soon as I’ve recovered from this here. I need a bit of sleep and some medicine. And you should probably go to bed as well before too long. Or do Ethaefael not sleep?“
As he noticed that Xelhes was just in as bad a state as he was, Veldrys looked at him apologetically. „I’m sorry. Maybe we’ll just have to lean on each other for support then. My home is just around the corner. I’ve decided to get a place close to the Chapel so that I can come quickly in case somebody needs me.“
