Caoin watched the woman as she continued to work on the dagger that had been ordered. Eventually, the woman left her work station and approached another employee of the Ironworks in order to ask for his help. This didn’t seem to bother Caoin, it probably happened often in the profession, considering there were probably many people with varying level of skill in different parts of the processes that were used to create the blades. And it would seem that Caoin was right in this assumption as the two metalworkers worked out a deal to help eachother with their projects. The man would help the woman now and she would help him with something later. This sort of trade off of assistance or work happened often enough in almost all professions. The Drykas girl remained where she was standing until the woman had gotten her help from the man and return to her own station, where she placed the blade on the anvil and let it sit to cool down.

Caoin wondered how long this would take, and if she would be able to speak to the woman during this time. Maybe have some conversation. It didn’t seem likely, since the woman was pretty focused on her work. Caoin didn’t want to say anything to break the silence either, since the woman had asked not to be disturbed. It was a rather awkward position to be in, not knowing when she could speak or not. In the end, Caoin decided to simply keep her mouth shut until the woman addressed her specifically, rather than risking the chance of incurring the woman’s wrath. Distracting her with idle chatter could also lead to the woman to possibly losing her focus and making a mistake in her work on the blade, since she could be thinking about everything she still had left to do to work on the weapon.

[Flashback: Boindil] Weaponsmith, Vend me a Weapon!

After about half an hour, the metal was cooled, making it possible to even it out. Boindil took up the hammer at that point, placed the blade on the anvil and started to coldforge it. Coldforging is hammering steel without heating it. This is done for small uneven spots on the blade. This part of the process didn't take too long, mainly because the other smith had been skilled at heat-treating blades.

After finishing, the Isurian woman took a final glance to see if she had missed any spot. Making sure she hadn't, she looked at the customer and said: "Going to finish the surface, but not at this spot." If Caoin would follow her or not, wasn't of her concern. Right now she needed to polish the surface as to make it more appealing to the eye.

After having walked over to the grinding stones, the smith chose, for the first part, the sandstone grinder. She started at low speeds, this to do the rough work. She frequently put it into a bucket filled with water. This was to cool the blade, so it wouldn't lose the properties it had gained during the heat treatment. This part alone took half a bell. In that time, she had changed to a different grinder about 20 chimes after starting. A smaller diameter grinded had been picked to grind the channel on the blade. Boindil did this completely out of the free hand.

After this step was finished, the blade was coated in oil, before sandpaper was used. The smith started with rather rough paper. One thing she was taught to always do and that was to move in a single direction. This made sure that the surface had the same appearance all over the blade. It might look like a boring task, but it still required a great deal of attention.

The final part of the weapon was attaching the grip and the guard. For time reasons, Boindil decided, against her own will, to take a premade one. For the grip she still had to burn the hole where the tang would fit in. This is done by taking a piece of metal in the same shape as the tang, heat it and push it through a predrilled hole.
These last parts didn't take too long to prepare and thus within ten chimes of having finished polishing the blade, the dagger was complete.

"Here is the dagger, try it out and tell me how it feels.", Boindil asked Caoin. She needed to know if the grip had been properly prepared. If the blade wasn't too heavy or out of balance. If it was, it would be a gruesome task to start all over again.

Caoin watched as the weaponsmith finished up the dagger that she was working on, impressed with the woman’s ability to do such labor. It was a job that took a completely different set of skills from the work that Caoin normally did, and the outcome was a physical product that could be held and that would last for many years, if it wasn’t broken. The dagger was offered up to Caoin for inspection and she took the blade, her fingers curling delicately around the grip of the weapon. She felt the weight of it in her hand, the balance of the blade, making sure it felt comfortable. All seemed well to her as she laid the blade of the dagger flat on the palm of her other hand, taking a moment to examine the sharpened edge; she didn’t have much experience with weapons, but she did know what felt right for her to hold and she knew that a blade needed to be sharp. She knew the pointy end was meant to go into the other person. Caoin took a few jabs at the air with the weapon and then nodded to the weaponsmith in approval. “It’s perfect,” Caoin said as she nodded, “this will do nicely.” She held the dagger up to inspect it once more, “Is there anything else? Other than payment,” she inquired of the woman as her eyes moved from the blade to the weaponsmith. “Are you sure you don’t want to mark it,” she asked, wanting to check that the woman was sure about not doing the engraving work on the dagger in order to add her own mark to it. If there was indeed nothing more to be done, Caoin would pay for the blade and be on her way.

The isurian woman was delighted inwardly that the dagger had turned out to be great. This meant that she didn't have to redo the whole process which would waste the metal she had already used.
"No, would take much time and I have more work to do. Maybe I make a better weapon when you come next time.", she replied and then finished the deal by taking the money required for a simple dagger.
As she saw the drykas girl off, Boindil turned around, stretching her arms. "Well, let's get to work on some engraving.", she thought to herself as she started to walk over to the workstation of the smith that helped her with the heat-treating of her little project.

Engraving is quite a time consuming job. Mainly because of the precision required with each strike. On top of that is the need to repolish the surface which had something engraved into it. The item that the smith needed to have engraved was a pair of steel vambraces. The design was simplistic and not too small for the weaponsmith's skill. Picking up the burin and a hammer, Boindil got to work.
She placed the tip of the burin on the metal and started to tick on it's back, removing small amounts of metal with each strike. When someone sees an engraver at work, it seems fairly easy to do, but this is quite fooling. Steel is hard and difficult to engrave into and it takes a lot of concentration to keep the lines steady and regular.
Just engraving the design into the bracers took a full two bells and then Boindil started to make the wire, which consisted of twisted copper and silver. Using a special tool and a small hammer, she hammered the wire into the groove she had made. This was something that was rarely done, but since the one who gave the order for it, wanted to have something special, this was the result.
Having beaten the wire into all of the grooves, Boindil then polished it and gave it to the smith she had done it for. By then it had gotten rather late already as the sun was setting, so it was time to head back to her room and take some well deserved rest. The following morning she'd be up before sunrise and start working back at the forge again.

Secret :
Graded by me at Dusk's request. Since you already had the dagger taken care of in your profile Caoin, nothing much to mention there. Good description on the weaponsmithing process Boindil. Got you some Observation and Rhetorics for your efforts Caoin, seemed appropriate. Oh, odd thing to note, but the link in Dusks office went to some Job thread of yours in Endrykas, Caoin. I found the right thread though, obviously :D.
