The Cursed Bridge Though one of the largest and most impressive of the bridges of Nyka, the Cursed Bridge is also one of the least used. The people would rather choose two other bridges if they need to cross between West and East, and argue at a safe distance over the terrible stories that surround this one. Even the monks no longer guard its ends; they say there is no use, without any people to populate it, but most realize that it is more for fear of shadows than anything else. For it is this place, where the Aperture gapes widest, that has seen the most death of all of Nyka. Historically, it was the site of hangings: the traditional sentence for condemned criminals before the law became more creative. After years of these hangings, they realized that more than crows were feasting on the hanging bodies. The dead men attracted the monsters of the Aperture, gave them the strength to wander the city in larger numbers and with greater malice. The Nykans learned their lesson and the hangings ceased, but it is still said that here is one of the widest doors between the city and its hell. Those who cross risk being pulled in, whether by strange black claws or the inspiration of their own suddenly tainted minds. There is a long rope ladder hanging from the Bridge’s middle, never drawn up or even touched by anyone who has learned anything. It may be used by any one at any time, at their own peril. |
