Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Kulkukan Tavern and Inn

The lowest section of Riverfall, aptly named the Third Tier, is host to the city port and is therefore one of the busiest and more bustling areas of the city. The Bluevein River finds it’s end here after a three thousand foot plummet into the Suvan Sea causing a wide radius of moisture laden air surrounding the location where river becomes much more. The mists create stunningly beautiful rainbows during the days when the sun shines brightly down into the port and it offers a soothing effect to the skin during the scorching summer days. However, during the bitter arctic winters when strong winds come roaring from the Suvan, those same mists coat the port with a layer of white frost and cause work to slow down incredibly on the docks.

The thunderous collision of the falls into the sea surprisingly seems to assume a harmonizing role when compared to the noise and chatter of the port. The deckhands constantly load and unload all sorts of goods from the incoming and outgoing ships. Different foods and supplies fill crates for other men to unpack and take to their respective recipients while wheat and gems are packed into outbound containers ready to see destinations anywhere around Mizahar.

Along with vegetables and fruits not commonly found near Riverfall or the Sea of Grass are wines and other drinks not native to the area. These goods do not have far to go before reaching their final destination, the Kulkukan Tavern and Inn. Located in this busy lower tier of the city, the ‘Kulk’ as it is affectionately known as by locals is always a place to find company and conversation. No matter which bell or chime throughout the day you walk in, there will be patrons ending work for the day or visitors wasting time before their ship leaves or becoming drowsy or drunk before ending their nights.

The red lanterns lighting the reception area and main bar give a soothing yet edgy atmosphere to customers as they wander in from the Third Tier. The entire lower level of the building is the tavern while the upstairs area is completely an inn. The same crimson theme is found throughout the inn and tavern to maintain the gentle premise and make all guests feel comfortable. The operator of the Kulk is an Akalak named Nystir and can always be found around either helping behind the bar, sharing conversation with guests, booking rooms, or preparing the place for the next rush of business. Nystir is the only Akalak working in the Kulk considering many of those coming in are not accustomed to Riverfall and the blue hue that accompanies it. Most of the employees are humans and half are female, a rare proportion in this city, in an effort to draw in more customers from the ships finding port here. The lead bartender and Nystir’s assistant is a human woman named Chelltaire, though the locals know her simply as Chell.

With the helpful and genuinely caring employees of the Kulk and the tones of ruby conveying a sense of comfort laced with a hint of secrecy, the Kulkukan Tavern and Inn is one of the more popular spots in Riverfall for all of its citizens and visitors alike.

40th Day of Winter, 510 AV

Mid-morning

Doc wandered in to the inn, realizing only after he pushed his way through the door how incredibly tired he was. Well. That was all soon to be taken care of.

He caught a whiff of some of the food being served, and his mouth immediately began watering. How long had it been since he'd had more to eat in a day than a handful of salted meat and a few pieces of moldy bread? He'd had no idea the state he was in, simply because the state itself left him foggy and unwell - but as he took a quick self-inventory, he was dismayed to find himself whipcord thin and likely rather wild-eyed if his thoughts were any indication.

He made his way up to the bar, only to find yet another huge Akalak frowning in dismay. He gave a little sigh and began digging around in his (sweet gods, how threadbare were his clothes?) vest pocket. "Bear with me, friend," he said, throwing in a wry smile as he pulled out one of the two moneypouches he kept hidden on his person. "It's been a long year. Give me you biggest, best room for the night, and after that I'll take a common room for a few tendays - not sure how long I'll be here, but I'll pay for twenty days up front and you can give me back what I don't spend if I need to leave before then. I'll need a bath drawn, and if you've got a girl who can give me a shave and a haircut I'd greatly appreciate it. And it may be a pipe dream, but if you've someone who can run over to whatever you guys have for a market and pick me up some new clothes, there's another few gold in it for them. In the meantime, though, the best food and wine you've got. What'll that be?"

As the speech went on and on, the Akalak's brows rose higher and higher, until he was just staring down at Doc with a look of utter surprise. The whole conversation had garnered the attention of one of the barmaids, who was watching it all with a look of utter amusement, and when Nystir glanced her way she nodded a little.

"Well," the barman said, "that's ten gold for the rooms, twelve for the food and wine. Let's say two gold for the bath and the rest. And if you draw up a list, I'm sure someone here would be happy to help with your clothes for a tip," he added.

Doc counted out the required 24 gold, then threw another two down on top of that for the Akalak's help. "Food and wine first," he chuckled.

Nystir laughed as he gathered up the money. "Ready to rejoin civilization, then?"

"You have no petching idea," Doc muttered, settling himself onto a barstool and tucking his moneypouch back into his shirt.

Late evening

When Murdoch emerged from his room later that night, it was an amazing transformation. Gone were the shaggy beard and wild, dirty hair; the torn and salt-stained clothing. The food and sleep had worked miracles, and as he sauntered down the stairs he felt more like himself than he had in half a year. He'd regained his usual smooth swagger, and muddy eyes darted around the room as he offered a smile to any pretty girl who looked his way.

"Damn, boy," Nystir said with a low whistle. "If you'd told me to expect this yesterday, I wouldn't have been able to imagine it," he laughed, already sending one of the girls off for Doc's second meal of the day.

"Tell me about it," Murdoch said with a grin and a mocking salute.

Timestamp ;; 27th Day of Spring, 511 AV (Evening)

It was mercifully easy to find Kulkukan Inn without directions, since the third tier of Riverfall only contained it, another building that's sign said something about Labor, and the port that Nenai had just hurriedly left.

Not entirely surprised by the mass of people inside, each of varying races and ages, the girl carefully navigated to the back, where the bar was. A single Akalak stood behind the bar, along with various other workers who were constantly moving from behind it to other parts of the room.

The Akalak noticed Nenai before she could decide whether or not to approach him and waved her over. "Welcome to the Kulkukan Inn, though people around here just call it the Kulk." He began amiably, smiling down at her in an attempt to alleviate her obvious discomfort. "I'm Nystir. Can I help you?"

After a moment of calming breaths, she nodded and replied "Yes, I would like to book a room for..." Nenai frowned in thought. "We'll start with seven days." While her true reason for leaving Kalinor was simply to get away from her Web and think, she would be loathe to not actually put as much effort as possible in finding information on her brother. A week would allow her to either find a lead on her brothers whereabouts, or secure a steady flow of income to continue paying for a room a this inn.

"That'll be 35 silver Mizas." Nystir replied, pulling a room ledger from under the bar counter as Nenai pulled out her money pouch. She only had Gold Mizas, and handed him four. She received five silver Mizas in change and, after signing her signature on the room ledger, was handed a key. "Hope you enjoy your stay." The Akalak was still all smiles, which she found both welcoming and unsettling. None the less, she returned the smile and thanked him before making her way upstairs to locate her room.

ledger :
Spent 4 gm, received 5 sm in exchange. Left with 86 gm and 5 sm.

Timestamp ;; 28th of Spring, 511 AV. Early Morning

Awoken by the sounds of Riverfall rousing itself for the new day, Nenai forced herself out of bed, attended to her bladder and dressed. Choosing to leave her pack under her bed, the Symenestra kept only her money pouch and Ceremonial Knife on her person. After a rumble from her stomach, she also snatched an orange from her pack to eat while she walked.

Fangs gum deep in the fruit as she came down the stairs - definitely not a premeditated excuse for not talking to anyone - Nenai simply waved at Nystir as she left the inn, not bothering to wonder why he seemed to be standing in the same spot as he had been the night before.

oocBackdate for services approved by Goss.
63rd of Winter...
Antar's first task for figuring out what to do in the city was to split of from Shai was to see about stabling the horses, while he picked up the tab for the room. He figured something nice, for the both of them would be good for them to be together yet have their space... and the rooms of the Kulkukan did not disappoint.

A decent large room's was offered for a rather fair price and he'd immediately snatched up such a thing for himself, paying the innkeeper till the end of the season and began to move their stuff in... he had come to Riverfall to enjoy some time with Shai and that was what he was going to do. Worse came to worse, if they did stay later then the spring he'd pay the tavernkeeper as well during that season.

Receipt :

Delilah had just arrived in the city, and knew that she would need a place to stay. After a quick glance at her map, she set foot for the Kulkukan. Upon arriving, she was offered a room. After contemplating her financial situation, she decided to get a small decent room. After a discussion with the hostess, it was agreed that Delilah would leave two sm per day, which she would leave on the front desk in the morning as she went out for the day.

Postby Davus on October 23rd, 2013, 6:59 pm

Timestamp : Afternoon, 32nd of Fall, 513 AV

The Svefra strode through the city towards the Kulkakan Inn, it had been recommended too him by a dockworker with less money than teeth; Less than half dozen by Davus's count which always means that a good time is nearly guaranteed. His gull swooped down onto his shoulder before he entered the tavern.

The smell of hot food and cheap ale hit his nose like a brick wall, and made his mouth salivate like the Bluevein River. His stomach reminded him that he hadn't had a chance all day to eat because of that damned portmaster and his paperwork. Or drink he recalled which tainted the memory of the portmaster even further.

He made his way up to the bar, the red lanterns giving him a headache as he lent against the counter finding himself in front of another Akalak and that was a place he didn't want to be. "You my friend look like you could need a good night sleep and a hearty meal" He wasn't far of the truth; heavy, black rings hung under his eyes, his clothes had the yellow tinge of sweat and face was smothered in a rough stubble "I can give the biggest room in the inn with a king sized bed, a steaming hot bath and the most beautiful of the Suvan Sea that you Svefra spend so much time on..." He continued "And as soon as that sun sets I'll send you up the biggest platter of seafood with the finest wine in Mizahar"

"Well that does sound great..." Davus replied "But instead I want your cheapest room with the cheapest food you sell..." The smile on Nystir faltered but Davus pressed on "And when I want a drink I'll have the cheapest ale you sell" He said with a smirk. He pulled out his moneybag "I'll need this room right until the end of this fall, how much you be needin' for this?" Davus asked while he watched the Akalak do the maths "Well there are 38 days till the end of fall, the room and food will be 2 silver Mizas each so that'll be 15 gold Mizas and 2 silver Mizas" Nystir said while Davus fished out the money from his pouch "Here you go, and I'll have a ale while you're at it" He ordered thowing down the coin with a few extra copper for the ale.

Davus lent back on the wooden stool, it was a uncomfortable thing; the wood was cheap and splintered with ease, the seat had no cushion and was uneven so Davus was constantly shifting in an attempt to find a comfortable position. His tavan, Shoal, sat on the bed opposite picking at the leftovers from his dinner, the fish had more bone that meat, the bread was stale and dry, and the vegetables that came with the meal looked like they that been picked out of the trash. In retrospect they probably had been judging by look on the Akalak's face when he handed over the money. The breeze that blew through the window was sharp and sudden on his bare chest; his clothes soaked in a bucket in the corner, the cold reminded him that winter was on it's way and he would have to prepare or go south after this fall "Heads we go north, tails we go south" he muttered to himself as he flipped the coin.

Postby Bryce Thomson on March 1st, 2014, 8:43 pm

Timestamp - 8th Bell, 1st of Spring, AV 414

Bryce ambled up towards to Kulkakan inn, it was simply enough to find with the general direction given to him by a guard with more muscle than brains, they were big that was true but still, he was pretty thick. He took a moment before entering the door, taking a deep breath to steel himself before entering the den of temptation.

The smell of sour smoke and cheap booze flooded his nostrils, bringing back a familiar sense of nostalgia and also pain. His gut let out a loud rumble, after his first day at sea he had learnt not to fill his stomach with the grey, stringy meat that filled the ship cook's soup because it was emptied soon enough, either by the motion of the wave or the general quality of the food.

He meandered up to the rough wooden counter that by the looks of it had been subjected to the many a knife in a patrons moment of drunken boredom. "You look like you need a room friend, and a few drinks with that" The Akalak at the bar said as he wiped down with a cloth that looked dirty than the counter.
"Well, no drinks for me but I'll take that room, and some food while you're at it" He said, giving the barman a respectful nod. "Okay, well we have a nice small little room available and as for food, you could have breakfast made up for you each day."

Bryce weighed up his options, he could try to find somewhere else to stay but he just wanted this sorted as soon as possible but a tavern? For seven years he had touched a drop, for seven long years yet here he was ready to spend the next season in a place that had at one point nearly ruined his life and pushed him over the brink. "... Okay" He said hesitantly "I'll take it, how much is it going to cost?" He asked.
"Well..." The Akalak said scratching his chin "Overall, it'll cost you ninety one Mizas for bed and breakfast, does that sound good to you?"
This time Bryce was the one to scratch his chin as considered his offer "Fine, sounds reasonable. One other thing..." He said as he fished out the gold from his coin purse "Under no circumstances let me drink, if you see me with a tankard in my hand just smack it out, got that?" He explained as he placed the mound of gold on the counter.
The Akalak looked back at the pile of gold then back up the man then back again "Sure, welcome to the Kulkukan inn and tavern. Chell, show this man to his room..."
Receipt91 x 0.5 GM = 45.5 GM (Food)
91 x 0.5 GM = 45.5 GM (Accommodation)
Total = 91 GM
