Physical/Mental Illness?

Postby Sam Mentes on January 14th, 2012, 11:26 pm

So I've been thinking about how illness is typically very dangerous to the people of Mizahar. How far could you damage a character (physically and mentally) before they would be unable to function properly in a society?

Physical/Mental Illness?

That seems to be kind of an open ended question. A 'damaged' person could probably live for longer, and with a higher quality of life in Syliras, for instance, compared to say...Sunberth. In general though the thing to remember is that Mizahar is freakin' brutal. BRUTAL. For instance there's a NPC in Syliras whom was a Knight for like...decades. Extremely skilled, still incredibly able bodied. He's confined to a desk doing paperwork because his sword arm was lost. It's not like in Braveheart where they strapped a mace to that one dude's stump and sent him back out to battle. When in doubt, stay as absolutely healthy as you can. Any disadvantage, no matter how small, can realistically get you killed.

Physical/Mental Illness?

I have to agree with Xalet. If at all possible I would keep your character relatively healthy. Now, of course sickness and injury happen. It is unavoidable sometimes, but in a world like Mizahar such things could lead to the death of a character, especially one planning on traveling.

Now, my recommendations? If you have to get an injury then you want one when you are with companions to help you. Mental damages are difficult to survive with for anyone in Mizahar. In this world death is just a hairs breath away given the situation, but of course many do manage to survive given a little know how and creativity.

As for functioning in society, as Xalet said its all about the city. For a city like Alvadas, where mental disorders are as numerous as the stars in the sky, there is every possibility that a person could function reasonably well. Other cities have other standards of course, so take that into consideration before giving your character any kind of mental disorder.

Hope this gives you a little help as you ponder your ideas a bit more :)
