Nai'shee was freezing. She was left alone on the street in the middle of winter. The beggar who took care of her died few weeks ago. He was homeless too, but he always managed to find a place to sleep at, at least for a little girl. Since he past away, from starvation, she was left on her own. She became beggar now, she became homeless kid, doing anything to give herself a chance to live. It was hard not to be starving in Zeltiva, even for rich people, for her it was much harder. She found shelter in someone's barn. She managed to hide from chillness at night, but day was terrible. If you don't have any money you can't enter anywhere. She was at the Zeltivan cold wind, called Bonesnapper the whole day.
Now, finally, she understood the pain her "father" gone trough. She was actually adopted as a baby. By nobody else but the homeless Zeltivan beggar. Now she understood what he gone trough for her. It wasn't easy to survive by yourself, but to raise a child! And to make your poorness almost unnoticeable. He made her a happy childhood out of nothing. She left a tear slip among her cheek.
But childhood is over now. She must take care of herself, or she's going to die too. She can't stand much more, she's cold and hungry, and if this goes on she's going to die before the end of winter. It must end here. She must not be what she used to be. She looked at the other side of the yard and saw a roost. A few hours later, when sun finally rises it'll be full of eggs. Even thinking about that made her hungrier. She cannot be cheerful kid anymore. She must sacrifice that in order to survive. She must kill her old self in order to survive. She cannot care about others anymore. It's time for her to star to think about herself. It's time for her to grow up. Or it's time for her to die. Decision was obvious.
With that thought she fallen asleep. She wasn't really sleeping, she felt uncomfortable and hungry, but she rested well. Tomorrow is a beginning of her new life. |

She woke up few hours later and glanced trough barn's door to the yard crawling. She was still sleepy, but morning winter air woke her up. Even nor it was one of things which was currently killing her, she enjoyed the beautiful fresh air and smells around her, which weren't so intense as in summer. Light was still gray and everything seemed monotonic. She couldn't help thinking: Some people now enjoy the smell of hot tea in their warm houses. She imagined the feeling, knowing they appreciate that a way much less then they should. She knew that this meant that not only her life is ruined, but her dream too. It will be hard to make enough money to become a sailor ever again. But she forgot sad thoughts, they were heavier burden then she could stand at this rate. She needed food and warm place to stay at. Everything else comes after it. Even her moral now.
She slowly took her way into some bushes, and looked at the house. At first she was very careful. Her heart beat faster then she could stand. It caused a little dizziness. But she convinced herself this wasn't a big deal, she does it to survive, the owners of the property had enough money to survive, even without few eggs. She haven't saw nor heard anything, so she hoped owners are still asleep. She moved to the roost, already less carefully. As she came in chickens began to cackle, which was definitely too loud, even for asleep people. She quickly kicked the chicken away and took as much eggs as she could, running from there, scared as hell.
Her head screamed, scared, even paranoid, thoughts. What if they catch me? They'll know I was bad! They might beat me! I might get in jail! I'm a thief!
I'm a thief!
That thought was echoed in her head that much she was already convinced. She's a thief. Then, there's nothing to worry about? What if she gets caught? Well, it's better then starving, they at least feed them in prison, and it's probably warmer then here. But if she's a thief, she won't get caught. It's just strategical game. From now on, she must be the winner. |

After few minutes she figured that she was still running hysterically. She almost fallen, but she remembered she must not break few eggs she had. She have headed for the wilderness to pick some wood and try to make fire for fry these somehow. She was really hungry and just a bit of common sense kept her from eating them like this, but she knew she'll get more energy out of fried eggs. She decided not to waste them, so she'll eat all of it today, why it still isn't bad.
After a while, she had dry woods for fire, and a metal panel to use it for frying. She made a little furnace out of stones, if you could even call that furnace, and prepared them. While they were crackling on fire, she just wanted to take them like that and eat them. The smell almost disabled her mind from working properly. Her stomach was screaming for the food in front of her. Yet, it was supposed to be someone else's breakfast. But it was right here, leaving Nai'shee wanting it so badly. Don't think like that, she yelled in her mind. You did what you had to do! And you'll keep doing so, rather then die! After she finished her breakfast she sat in front of a fire, finally full and warm, thinking about everything.
Now, when everything past, and when she's finally calm and warm she realized it was actually fun. The adrenalin, the danger, being smarter, winning. It really was fun. Stealing. It was something she had to do, it was something she didn't wanted to do, but she couldn't help thinking it was fun. She almost felt a little pride for success.
Is this the way she's going to live from now on? If it is, she is going to like it. |
