Most people where I live don't call it "Uni", is why I ask. (I study etymology as a hobby, and I know Australia and Texas are two regions that use that particular word).

Ahhh, you're a Brit! That explains it. Australia is also descended from Britain and has a lot more language in common with Britain still than the US does, since they were only founded a little over a century ago. Whereas the original US colonies were like 400 years ago. So American English has had more time to stray from what British English is like.
