She couldn’t understand his humour. Examining his face as he laughed, Fiera grew even more confused. He was laughing at her. What had she said wrong? It was only when Luke had explained why he had found her question funny that Fiera understood, “That wasn’t my question.” Trying again, she rephrased, “I once heard that Mizahar was a... planet? Yes, I think that is it. A planet, a very large round sphere, I believe. Are there any more of these planets? That was my question” Pausing, Fiera considered Luke for a moment again, “Did I not just tell you that I left my home in Taldera recently do that I could travel? Of course I am a foreigner” Humans were so silly. The pleasantries that they so eagerly insisted on discussing were often quickly forgotten. Lowering her eyes with a smile, Fiera watched her fingers through the water, sending ripples to the surface with every movement. In the silence that followed, Fiera stiffened, since for her, there was no silence. The irregular beat of running feet was obvious to her. There wasn’t one set of footsteps, or even two. What scared her most was that it was a large group, in the middle of the night. The whole event seemed peculiar, but Fiera wasn’t to be deterred by curiosity. Luke still seemed unaware of anything out of the ordinary. Fiera begun to remove the loose shirt that prevented her from safely shifting into her animal form. Perhaps she should warn him of the approaching crowd? Really, she didn’t owe him anything. If anything, she should have wanted him to suffer for not warning her about the ale, but she did not. There was nothing Fiera feared than the unknown, so in a shaky voice she voiced her thoughts, “There is something running towards us, and it isn’t alone. You might want to run too” Without waiting for a reply she shifted. A sleek mottle-furred cougar slipped out of the water. Taking her bundle of clothes from under the tree, Fiera waited for Lucas to react. Perhaps he would not even believe her. |
