Physical Description
Between their slender build, long hair, and androgynous features, what normally strikes people first about Rael is how hard it is to tell their gender from a distance, which is just how they like it. Close inspection, however, will reveal them to be male. Some days, their actions, mannerisms, and clothing will indicate their gender to be either male or female,This is not, by any means, a good disguise, or a disguise at all, in fact. Close inspection will still reveal their gender to be male. On their more feminine days, they simply seems like a feminine man,and on their masculine days, like a normal(ish) man. but for the most part, Rael is content to let people be confused.
Rael has light brown hair, which goes down halfway to their waist. Depending on the situation, and what gender they feel like, they will wear it in a ponytail, let it hang free, or, if she's feeling very feminine, braid it.
They're 5'10", their eyes are a light blue, and they're rarely ever seen without a friendly smile on their face. The overall impression is of a polite, friendly, if slightly odd, young man/woman.
Character Concept
Personality: Rael is, on the whole, a people person. They always have a smile (and a few coins) for any beautiful woman who crosses his path (Handsome men, too, if appropriate). They're generally willing to make new friends, crack jokes, and will be a loyal friend to those who they think deserve it.
Religion: Having lived in Ravok since they were a child, for Rael, Rhysol is, has always been, and will always be, an important figure in their life. Rael hopes to eventually catch the attention of the god, to be noticed and recognized.
However, they are equally loyal to the Voice, and since they've been passed over to join the Ebonstryfe....
Gender: Rael is tri-gendered, which means that their gender (not their physical sex) switches between male, female, and genderless. Rael tends to act genderless, and would then use neutral pronouns to refer to themself. As a general rule, at the beginning of each season (10th to 25th approx) he will begin to think and act more and more masculine. The same happens at the end of the season (65th-80th), when she will use more of her female gender.
This is not a definite rule, of course. It's entirely possible for Rael to be genderless during those times, or for them to be male or female in the middle of the season. It's simply that they tend to favor certain genders in certain parts of the season.
Most people see them as male, and that's fine with Rael. They don't wear woman's clothing, although they would be more comfortable than most doing it if they needed to. It doesn't matter what other people think. They know what they are, and will act accordingly.
Character History
Pre-creation: Born in Zeltiva, Rael lived a fairly average life as a child. They were quick to make friends, although there was always something off about them. Their mother would occasionally bring them to the docks where she worked, where they would be entertained by the myriad of people coming in and out of the port city. It wasn't to last, however.
When they were five, a bad storm hit the city. Their mother was one of the casualties. Their father, a sailor, was away too often to take care of Rael, and so he sent a message to his brother.
Rael. This is your uncle. You'll have to live with him from now on.
Why?! I don't want to go. I want to live with you.
You know why you can't do that, Rae. I'll visit you. I promise.
It's not fair! Why do I have to go? Why can't I stay here?
You'll love Ravok, I promise. There's plenty of food there, it's not so cold, and you won't have to smell the kelp beer. It'll be like an adventure.
But you won't be there.
Several weeks later, Rael was in Ravok, living with their aunt and uncle. After the initial period of miserable adjustment, they grew to like Ravok, and rarely missed Zeltiva. They made friends, played in the city, and settled into a more or less normal life. Their father visited, frequently at first, then less and less as time went by, although still regularly.
Almost from the day he arrived, Rael admired the Ebonstryfe. They had often dreamed of becoming one of them, of serving Rhysol in a way so much more fulfilling than being a simple civilian. Their uncle, a city guard, only encouraged his nephew/niece's dreams, teaching them how to fight, both with a gladius, and with their hands and feet.
Their aunt, on the other hand, was slightly more worried about their safety, rather than their glory, and chose to teach them something she thought would keep them alive: Magic. There was only so much she was willing to teach a child, but she taught them the basics of auristics and hypnotism.
Be careful, Rael.
Why? It's not like it's dangerous.
Isn't it? Magic is a wonderful skill to have, but it comes with it's own cost
What do you mean? All I had to do was sit still and think about the table until I could see it's aura
I don't mean a cost to learning it, dear child. Haven't you noticed yet?
Notice what?
I'm blind, Rael. I can only live normally because I can use auristics.
But isn't that good then? Being able to see doesn't seem like much of a cost.
I'm also blind because of it. I can only really see outlines now. A few years before you were born, I, well, I tried to hard. I wanted to see every part of everyone at once, and this is the price I payed.
....
I'm not telling you this to scare you. I'm telling you this as a warning. Magic is useful. But be careful not to bite off more than you can chew
Their best friend was a boy called Aren, about three or four years older than them. They looked up to Aren, who took them under his wing, showed them all the sights, taught them about the Ebonstryfe, the Black Sun, and the city guard, the last of which Aren was very familiar with, as his father was also one.
As Rael and Aren grew up, they trained together, Rael to join the Ebonstryfe, Aren, the city guard. Rael's 12th birthday came and went, as did their 13th, and their 14th. Still, they were passed over for recruitment, again and again.
Disheartened as Rael was, they couldn't help noticing their friend grow more and more distant.
What's wrong?
Wrong? Nothing's wrong.
Don't give me that Aren. We've been friends for years. I know when you're lying, mate.
It's nothing, really. A bit of trouble at home.
What kind of trouble? Come on, don't you trust me?
I just... Do you ever think about leaving Ravok? Going out into the rest of the world, maybe going back to Zeltiva for you, eh?
But Ravok is.. Ravok is home now. I haven't thought about leaving since I came, almost. And you grew up here!
I know, it's just that, you know. There's a whole world out there.
The world is awful, Aren. We got attacked by monsters on the way here. A huge storm killed my mother. Zeltiva was constantly on the verge of starvation. Ravok is so much safer.
Yeah, I guess you're right.
They weren't entirely convinced, of course, but they put it away in their mind. So what if he wanted to leave? Aren had always been restless, and this wasn't too out of character for him.
It wasn't like he had any reason to be suspicious of his best friend.
Are you.. are you drunk?
Rael! Jusht the pershon I wash hoping to shee
Aren, get a grip on yourself. You look a mess.
I look a mesh? Everyshing's a mesh.
What's wrong with you Aren? You've never done this before.
Ravok ish a mesh. Rhysol is a petching mesh
W-what? Keep your voice down! There might be people listening! Are you crazy?
Not crazy. You're all crazy.
You're drunk, and babbling nonsense. Honestly, why do you even-
Why do you even lishen to him? He's jusht gonna try to kill all of you
Stop it.
I'm leaving. Shoon. Gonna go to Shyla.. Shyril.. Shyliras. Can't shtand it here. Hate it.
You don't know what you're saying.
Kaya... She wash amazing. A pretty panther. Beautiful woman. Smart and funny and almost human! And they killed her, killed her when she tried to leave. Why? WHY?
A Kelvic? You-
They tried to protect her but they couldn't.
...
Aren...
Who is they?
Can't...
When they next saw Aren, they acted as though nothing had happened, and the man didn't seem to remember anything. Rael kept a discreet eye on him after that, watching for any suspicious behavior.
One day, Rael ended up following their friend into the woods, where they caught sight of Aren speaking with a few people. They couldn't get very close, certainly not enough to hear anything, but they were close enough. Close enough to see the black burn on some of their hands.
Knowing how pliable their friend was with several mugs of beer in him, Rael eventually managed to get Aren to spill the beans. What they found out turned their world upside down.
Aren had gotten involved in a small group trying to rescue slaves from Ravok. They hadn't been very successful, and what Rael had witnessed was the disbanding of the group after Aren's lover, Kaya, had gotten killed by the city guard, along with several others in a failed escape attempt.
For the first time in their life, Rael was faced with a real dilemma. They could report it. They should report it. It was the right thing to do. But this was their friend, their best friend. They held off for a few days, trying to figure it out, but eventually, they came to a decision.
Go, Aren.
How did you..
You're a talkative drunk. I hope you find a home in Syliras.
I'm sorry.
I know.
