A surreal cavern city inhabited by Symenestra where stones glow and streets are reams of silk. Cocoon like structures hang between stalactites and cascade over limestone flows in organic and eerie arabesques. Without a Symenestra willing to escort you, entrance is impossible.

Finally finished setting the warp on his loom to the appropriate tension, he began promptly on the process of weaving by sliding the emerald silk string through the shed, and bringing the beater down to make the first line in what would be a silk scarf when everything was done. It was a busy day at the Weft and Warp, made busier still by the absence of a few of it's teachers. While it did manage to sell its products, the Weft and Warp was first and foremost as weaving school, and with some of the teachers absence, others working within had to take on students, including those who weren't even teachers but simply weaved cloth for the school to sell to support itself. Thankfully, Dovinya hadn't been among those told to teach for in truth he had no desire nor skill to teach the younger symenestra that came there the art of weaving though he certainly would try if so ordered. It would not be good to say no to the proprietors after all, and they happened to be people he had grown to like in any case.

For now, he'd simply concentrate on his own work, which by happened to be making the fabric for the scarf and delivering it to another weaver to sew it up into the masterful work fitting for sale at such a grand establishment this one was. Tossing the wood block back through the opposite side of the shed once more, he threaded the silk thread through again, and promptly tightened it's connection to the weft by sliding the larger wooden block down and pushing the thread tightly in place with the beater. Like in many things, he found weaving mediative as well, which is why he suspected he enjoyed his work so much. After all who could deny the peace that came with working and knowing you had purpose, or even the elation that came with completing a piece of fabric. It was all apart of the many small joys to be found in life in Kalinor, something he pitted outsiders for not knowing.

With dexterous hands, he slid the wood block up, and reopened the shed between the threads enough that he could slide the thread through, and quickly closed it down only to open it again and repeat the process. It was a strange thing to think that by using less effort, but more purposeful movements that he could weave the fabric faster than if he went about it spending time to open it all the way and spend unnecessary time. Of course he wanted to the fabric to be flawless, but if he could accomplish the same but in less time, it likely help a lot more around the Weft and Warp with things being as busy as they were.

It drew a rare genuine smile to his features at having intuited a new methodology for his weaving practice, though the thought that he could be completely off the mark soured that smile soon enough. Still he went about using his knew method with the loom, sliding the wooden square he used to anchor the thread through the shed and catching it gracefully on the other side, only to slide it back through once the beater had come back down and up. Before him the threads where slowly taking shape into the long sheet of fabric they would become and to his satisfaction no knots showed in is work, a vast improvement from when he was still green in the art. It became like an idle movement after that, his sliding the thread through the shed a constant, rhythmic movement till at last the emerald fabric was finished halfway.

Now it was time to make things interesting and truly attempt to expand his talents. Rather than make the plain fabric he usually did, he would be attempting to add a pattern to it's center, making it more than just a simple scarf in the end. He wouldn't try anything complex though as another weaver had warned him against, though a simple circle would suffice for now, and allow the sewer quite a bit of a chance to be creative with the embroidering process. Untying the emerald silk thread from the wooden square so to not waste it, he put it in the basket at his side and drew from it instead a silk thread dyed two distinct shades of green and regular intervals at his request. Measuring out a length of the thread, he carefully cut it and took it in his hand and then turned his attention to his loom and hand threading it into the weft carefully as to only leave one darker green interval in the middle of the silken thread to serve as the base for his circle, the rest of the thread being the same emerald green as the rest of the fabric. Down the beater came sealing it in place and in his hand was another thread which he promptly slid in place building upon the design below it. He repeated the method over and over again until the entire circle had taken shape in the center of the fabric, and he could resume simply tossing the square through the shed and making quick work out of forming the rest of the fabric.

In the end it had taken him three bells of effort to make the fabric, and seeing the piece finished, he cut it from the threads on its ends as close as he could manage, and folding the fabric, he walked across the room to deposited it beside a woman quietly humming while she sewed. Walking back across the room he resumed his spot in front of his loom, and back to the work of making fabric for the scarves to be made.

[Job Thead] Emerald Weaving (Open)

Postby Nayana on March 11th, 2012, 2:37 am

When Nayana pushed aside the silk curtain that acted as the wall between rooms her gaze did not wander around to look at others, instead fixing on the spot where her loom was station. In her hands was a small basket that contained threads of various color, a blade to cut the threads, a wooden piece, and an unseen medium sized rock at the bottom. It was the same routine as normal, the young Symenestra girl going to her employer and asking what was to be made today, gathering the threads, and returning to the loom. Not once had Nayana simply weaved her and made something she thought would be useful, always making sure to ask the Headmistress to make sure she did not make an item that was not needed or would not sell. Today it was sashes, something that was extremely basic unless one tried to create a design in them, at which point it became an elaborate trial of will and precision. Taking a seat at her small loom, Nayan set the basket down and removed the rock and a roll of 'thread', setting the rock down and then begin to unwind a portion of the roll.

Taking the start of the unwoven thread, Nayana placed it around the first group of pegs on her loom, making a loose rectangle, and then cutting the thread where the beginning met the other part of the thread. After doing so she repeated the process again, making another loose triangle and cutting the thread, setting the now separate threads in a pile on the small table. As she continue to do this a smile already formed on Nayana's face, small in size but still enough to show she was enjoying herself. To weave was almost like a therapy of sorts to her, allowing her to simply relax and focus on one task at a time. Here she could ignore the plight her people faced, helping them by making fabrics to sell, and find comfort in the control she had over the threads. As her thoughts stayed on the process of cutting the threads a low hum could be heard coming from Nayana, the tune of it slow and delicate while she continue her work. Moments later the pile had grown much larger in size, Nayana rolled the rest of the loose thread back into the roll, setting it back in the basket while she placed the blade on the table. Taking one of the threads she placed it under the two lowest pegs at the start of the loom, pulling them threads up to the top peg above them. With strong yet agile hands Nayana tied the knot with the ends of the thread, pulling it tight against the top peg and then cutting off the excess thread that protruded out from the knot. Much like before she continued to do the process with the other threads, knotting them all tightly against the to peg and making sure there was not too much slack in the threads. As she did her gaze wandered around the room for the first time, looking to see how anyone else in the room was doing. Her gaze landed on a man that was obviously older than her, the young female humming while she continued her work yet watched him do his.

Despite his age she could tell that his weaving seemed to be on the same level as hers, though he seemed a bit faster than she was. Her mother had always said that Nayana's biggest flaw in weaving was that she took longer than others, though the young Symenestra could never force herself to hurry a job. The main reason she weaved was because she enjoyed it so why should she force herself to work faster, especially if it could reduce the quality? There was no point in making products faster if no one would buy them, instead it would simply mean she had wasted her time even more than normal. With each heddle now made Nayana set them aside in a pile, picking up the white silk thread from her basket and unwinding it. Taking the rock as well, Nayana placed in on top of the beginning of the unwoven thread, placing it just before the beginning of the loom so she would know where it was. Adjusting the tension peg so that it was at the center, Nayana began to wind the thread around the pegs in the proper order, using all the pegs and then placing the heddle over the warp thread. With that she continued winding the thread over the loom, using the second path next which did not use a heddle, then returning to the first path and applying the heddle, making sure the knots of each heddle were on the bottom pegs, away from the threads.

After setting eight heddle threads and eight floating threads, the Symenestra cut the white thread, taking some red thread from her basket and tied the end of it with the white. This was not the first time she had tried to alternate colors in her works, yet still she had not gotten the art down specifically. Weaving with different colors could become a complicated thing as if the tension was a bit off or the length was not right it would be apparent in the final product, ruining a design or making one color larger in size than it was suppose to be. As she began to wound the red thread the same way as she did the white, Nayana's hum changed it's melody, becoming faster paced and almost more optimistic, her head swaying a little back a worth as her eyes looked back up at the man from before. She noticed him as he walked past her to deposit a scarf he had finished, Nayana quickly checking the scarf as he walked by and believing it to be the same quality as her own work: average. When he walked past her to return to his loom again she did not look at him, simply continuing to wind her red thread and said, "You did a good job...I wish I was able to work as fast as you are and still make decent quality products." The urge to say something more was there yet Nayana decided against it, knowing that just as she had her work to do he had his. Still it was odd for her to find another here with talent equal to her own and not have a student with them. Nayana herself still did not have one yet she believed that could change at any moment, though also believed it was because she needed to concentrate when she weaved and having a younger individual talking constantly could simply make all her works worthless.

OOCSorry if the details on the weaving are off, sound wrong, and seem awkward, I am still learning on how to make stuff right, but I am watching an extensive amount of videos and reading various sites to try and get this down to an extent. Explaining it might seem awkward as well. Sorry in advance.

Looking over, he allowed his gaze to fall over a symenestra that had garnered his attention with her words and found himself thankful she didn't return the look in kind for it took him a lengthy moment to sufficiently hide his surprise at being spoken to. It wasn't hard though to pulls his eyes away from her and back to his loom as recognition set in that this one worked here like himself. "My thanks miss though no doubt it is due impart to the simplicity of my work" Dovinya proffered, his fingers mechanically unstringing the cut threads from their pegs and replacing them with fresh silk ones colored a deep azure. As nimbly as he could manage, he spaced them each a quarter of an inch apart as he stringed the lines and kept the warp taut, yet pliable. After all it shouldn't take immense effort to close the shed and bring the strings inline.

"Perhaps though it is I that should be seeking council from you for I don't know the first thing about mixing colors" Dovinya added as he finished tying off the last of the strings, and got his loom in order. Sparing a moment to look over at the woman's own progress, he offered her a smile.

OOCSorry this took so long, my muse randomly took a vacation and some things popped up with school too.

Hearing talk of the simplicity of weaving Nayana let out a small sniff noise, soft and barely audible. Simple? No sooner had he spoken than her opinion of him lowered, displeased with how he spoke of her job. To Nayana weaving was far from a simple process and while the actions of it did become repetitious it did not mean it was simple; compared to weaving there were far simpler things in the world. "If your work is something you consider simple, than perhaps it is time you tried working at something more difficult," was her response, the wording making it sound like rude yet the way she spoke make it sound like a simple suggestion. With that Nayana returned to her loom, cutting off the thread in her hand from the ball it was attached too. Once it was separate she took the thread under the stone and tied them together on the tension knob, making sure the threads were taut and firm while trimming off any excessive thread from the knot.

Setting the blade down, Nayana's hand reached into the basket again, this time pulling out another ball of thread as well as an odd piece of wood. Taking the thread she began to wind it around the shuttle, making sure to wind the thread around the edge, her motions quick yet still precise. This was a part of weaving that Nayana knew she could do without focusing, the motion now second nature to her. Looking back over at the man she said, "I only know a little about mixing colors, and this is my first attempt at it. For now it looks fine but I feel like I cut one of the threads a little too short but I will not know until I finish. For your next product you should try it; give yourself an extra challenge." Another suggestion, though this time she had worded it far better than the last, the rudeness gone completely. Maybe that was another reason she did not have a student to teach yet, because she sometimes spoke before she thought and came off as rude. Shaking her head clear Nayana went back to winding the shuttle, glancing back up every so often to see how Dovinya was progressing with his work.

Dovinya's smile quickly dissipated at the woman's retort to his compliment, and he opened his mouth to speak bitter rebuke to the woman before he remembered his place. She had caught him off guard with her surprising words and slipped past his guard, drawing to his attention a flaw in the control of his features. Had she been one of the beastly creatures that roamed the surface, he might just well have signed his own death sentence, but this was not the surface, and she was not a human but instead one of his own kind, and deserving of the respect all that entailed. As deserving as she might be of respect, it didn't mean he had the will to pull it off just yet though, and turning his attention to his loom, and keeping his face blank, he distracted himself from the hasty words that came to mind in preparation for working on his next set of fabric while thinking of a proper way to frame his next words that did not hint at his distaste for her at the present moment.

Pale, delicate fingers plied the silken thread before him, lacing it through the weft as carefully as he could manage so that everything was in line, and no knots could be seen throughout the work. It worked well to distract him from his flare of anger, the interweaving of threads drawing peace back to settle presently in his mind, and at last think of a proper response to the woman's words.

"Wise words from a young mind" Dovinya stated rather simply, sparing a glance at her when he spoke to show her a measure of respect with his attention. Her advise didn't help him much in the way of mixing colors, but he thought it a sound decision to thank her all the same, and avoid more bitterness between them. It would not look well on him after all if he was seen arguing with another at his place of work, and he needed this to help save for the next winter when he would be sent off on harvest. For a time after he went quiet, silently working on the weft of threads before him, going methodically through his work with all the grace of a symenestra. He spoke with his actions now, and he hoped the mended the mixed feelings between them more than any words ever could.

It's a pity that the thread ended so quickly. I quite enjoy reading threads that take place in the Weft and warp.

I couldn't find any other skills besides Weaving that I could give you XP in.

If there are any issues with the way I graded this thread, please PM me.

Nayana, if you come back and would like your posts to be graded a well, PM me.
