Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Raiha had been determinedly hefting yet another hunk of former wall, ignoring Uruk’s claim. He was always like that. And chances were, always would be. His this, his that. He must have been fun to play with in the sandbox, she remarked to her sister. Maybe he'll grow up eventually when he's a father.

He simply does not worry about things such as appearances, Kanikra said dryly. And be thankful. It keeps every other one of them from laying claim to you, or trying to, and trying to devise traps to ensnare the pretty little Akontak as their own. Yes, it’s annoying, because we are our own person, not his slave or walking womb like he thinks we are, but he serves a purpose. So long as he serves that purpose, let him. Don’t let them know that it annoys you, else he’ll do it just to try to rub against you, just like I lay barbs under his skin and shove them when I feel like it.

Makes sense, she looked up as Chain chirruped, immediately looking for any potential threats that the cat had heard and the dogs had not, busy and distracted though they may have been. She saw the cat with Kavala, and watched the two of them for a moment. Surely she was just overwhelmed, just stunned. Surely, surely. She turned her back for a moment to set the chunk of wall down, turning back to Kavala as she put her hand on her stomach. In that moment, Raiha’s throat went dry, and she dropped her hands, motionless as she breathed and focused on Kavala, on her aura, hoping that what it might have been wasn’t what was happening. The emotional distress was easily visible to the young aurist, but more telling and more pressing was the physical eruption. She found herself moving at last, reaching for Kavala, just in case she fell. “You’ve got to lie down,” she told her, grasping her arm with gentle hands. “Come on. You’ve got to lie down. We’ll get you cleaned up and changed and you can rest. They’ll handle the outdoors for a little longer.”

Kontinese miscarriages weren’t common, Raiha knew, but she knew what was happening for what it was. Humans were cursed with that monthly bleeding cycle, and sometimes came for teas to lessen the pain of the cramps. And she knew without a doubt that there was nothing that could be done for it, now that it had happened. Kavala’s own mark hadn’t saved it, and nothing Raiha could do for her would. But this time, she was firm. She absolutely would not let Kavala stand there, even if she had to pick her up and carry her back into the tunnel to the Within, leaving the men to work. “You’ll be okay,” she told Kavala gently. “Let’s get you changed out of this and into a nice hot bath. I’ll make you some tea, and you need to rest. You’ll be fine, and that’s what is important. Your health and your safety, and you’re safe. You will be fine.”
