Liora, the Benshira

Basic Information
Name: Liora, from the tents of Hadar, of the sons Malech
Race: Benshira
Age: 23
Birthday: Summer 5, 488

Physical Description
Liora is a slender woman, small boned and in need of a meal. For a Benshira, she is of average height, standing at about 5’10’’. Her smooth skin is lightly tanned, the rich color of coffee mixed with a bit of cream. Liora’s hair is dark brown and falls down to her chest, although she usually keeps it tightly braided. Before her family’s accident her mother used to praise her glorious, long locks but now that she is alone she prefers to crop it shorter than traditional Benshira hairstyles so that it doesn’t get in her way.

Like all Benshira, Liora’s eyes are her most striking feature. Pale green like the exotic hydrangea flower, her father used to say. He loved to look at the flower seller’s wares. Liora’s common garb is a long maroon tunic with short sleeves that she ties with a simple brown cord around her waist. She wraps a long, light cotton shawl around her head and shoulders that is a deep blue color with green threads shot through the fabric. Her feet are usually adorned with simple leather shoes, though in the evenings when the sands have cooled she loves to walk about barefoot.

Character Concept
Outwardly, Liora is a very stoic young woman, but she is beginning to loosen up. Once someone can get past her outer shell, she is a very gracious and even a little silly at times. Her stoic, insecure nature can be very difficult to get past, predominantly because she doesn't give most people the time to get past her outer shell. She is hesitant company and is reluctant to make friends with those she trades with in Yahebah, preferring to remain more anonymous. She's polite to all she sees but tries not to make a lasting impression with any of the other Benshira. Mostly Liora is afraid of what people may think of her and her lifestyle. For the most part her insecurity and self-consciousness is in her head, and her fears are relatively unfounded. She enjoys her religion and spends much of her free time dancing her prayers as her mother taught her. She became much more devout after her experiences in the past few years, mostly needing something to focus her energies on in her free time so that she wasn't consumed by thoughts of the past. Like other Benshira, Liora has a deeply ingrained fear of magic and views its users with barely disguised suspicion.

Character History
When she was young, Liora lived the ideal Benshira life. Her family was dye traders, roaming around the desert trading and selling dyes between Yahebah and roaming nomadic tribes. Their trade allowed them to live comfortable but not extravagant lives, but their clothes were always made of the most vibrant fabric. Because of their roaming, nomadic nature all members of her family were taught skills to survive in the desert. Liora’s grandmother lectured often about the knack to remember where to find all the life saving oases scattered throughout the desert and how to ration water conservatively when between water sources. Her grandmother used to frighten her with parables as a child about silly children who wandered into the desert without enough water. Liora’s mother taught and passed down her skill of recognizing plants in the desert: which were to be avoided, which could be kept to be sold later to medicine women, and which made the best soups. Her life was blissful playing with her siblings and cousins as they traversed the desert, life seemed like one grand adventure. As she grew older she became proud of her heritage; she always danced with zealous at evening prayer with her mother and aunts.

In the summer of 505, after her seventeenth birthday, a terrible accident befell Liora’s family. Or at least, that is what most people assume. On the day they were to have reached Yahebah and meet with other traders they did not show up. Days went by with no word, so it was assumed that the family was dead or lost out in the vast seas of sand. Liora was assumed dead as well, though it caused quite a surprise when she was suddenly sighted casually walking down a street in Yahebah three years later. When those who had known her and her family attempted to approach her she refused to speak of what had happened, or how she had survived since. She would merely shake her head and quickly walk away. Many tried to take her into their homes out of pity, but she always refused. Since she was an adult and predominately quite polite to any she met, most people decided to just let her be.

Liora spends most of her days out in the desert, foraging for the rare plants that go into Yahebah's famous teas to barter with at the market. She does not find the rare plants often, but has managed to live off the work thus far. Alone and armed with only a simple dagger of her fathers, the only object she has from her previous life, she never ventures more than a day’s ride from the safety of Yahebah’s walls. During the time for Masha, Liora attends religious ceremonies and praises Yahal for her life. In the evenings she pitches her tent in the shadow of Yahebah’s walls, feeling secure with the city’s Yahalmen watching over her. She chooses to set up a tent every night instead of getting a real home in the city, not wanting to feel tied down to a city where she no longer has any tangible roots.
