LAELI Physical Description Name: Laeli Stormfast Race: Drykas Age: 17 Birthday: Summer 15, 494 AV Character Concept Laeli is a sweet, bright, generally happy girl who has experienced little strife or hardship in her life – until the recent djed storm hit Cyphrus. Having known only love and gentle support and encouragement from her parents and extended family, she has grown to be a cheerful, loving, affectionate and outgoing person. Honest and hard working by nature, her only major shortcoming is that she tends to be a bit bossy with her brothers and those she thinks need the wisdom of her “supervision.” She also does enjoy a good argument from time to time, and she isn’t shy about voicing her opinions, though she isn’t typically excessively strident or rude about it. She does have a tendency to take things to heart, perhaps too much so at times, and though not generally a “sensitive” soul, she does brood a bit on her own perceived mistakes and shortcomings. She can be a bit hard on herself, especially when she is having difficulty mastering a new skill. Overall, though, she is a good person to have as a friend and a loyal and caring daughter, sister, and, maybe one day, wife. Physical Appearance Laeli is a rather petite person, standing only around five feet tall, with a slim, delicate physique. Her father has always called her his little bird, for she is small, energetic and quite chirpy. Her long dark hair falls to almost her waist, and typically she wears it at least partially braided and pulled back or up. Often she will wrap bits of it in red ribbon or sport red beads in it, or wrap it with a red scarf. Her eyes are dark hazel, a blend of green and brown, framed with thick, dark lashes and topped by delicately arched but long, dark eyebrows. Her face is heart shaped and her pale pink lips are very full. She has a slightly olive complexion which tans deeply in the summer sun. Her expression is usually a happy one, open, trusting and curious, and she moves always at a fast pace, like a child who has too much energy to walk and not run. Her clothing is always bright and colorful and she favors reds, though she wears really any pretty color. She doesn’t care too much for the darker shades, such as black, brown or grey. Like most Drykas, her day to day wear is practical and functional for work and riding. But Laeli is always excited and happy to dress up in prettier clothes for festivals and special events. She does have wind marks, since her twelfth year, consisting of a vine sporting leaves and tiny flowers (denoting the Drykas ‘roots’ to the earth) on her left leg, beginning at her outer ankle bone and curling up to just above her knee, and a swirling pattern of curlicues that wraps about her right upper chest, shoulder and back (denoting the wind that blows almost unceasingly over the sea of grass). On her left pinky finger curls a snake, put there as a ward against snake bite. Character History Laeli was born on a balmy early summer day, and the sunshine and fine weather seemed to work their way into the baby’s sunny temperament. Two older brothers welcomed her with boyish tolerance, and before her first birthday, her main goal in life seemed to be toddling after them on chubby, unstable legs. As her own birth was followed by those of yet two more brothers, it was no wonder that Laeli had a rather rough and tumble childhood. However, she was always very close with her mother, grandmother and aunts. The inevitable tom-boy wildness that infused her early years was tempered by her keen interest in the craftwork they created – weaving, embroidery, knotwork and knitting. Her little hands proved to be quite deft with working with fibers of all varieties, and she seemed to have a flair for the artistic-creative aspects of it as well. After a day of playing chase and riding and hunting for rabbits and playing with the dogs, Laeli would sit quite happily at her grandmother’s knee and practice all that the old woman had to teach her. Her father, Eben, Ankal of the Stormfast pavilion, was also a skilled craftsman in his own right, building and overseeing the construction of safe, weathertight pavilions for other Drykas families. He was a talented woodcarver as well. With gentle patience, he taught each of his children about both crafts, and Laeli was especially adept with a knife, whittling and carving all sorts of designs into pieces that were both decorative and functional. For her sixteenth birthday, Eben presented Laeli with his own late father’s set of woodcarving tools, as a reward for her diligence and progress in learning this family craft. As she reached her teen years, her father also began to instruct her in runecraft and gylphing, as she seemed to be both interested and adequately talented in the magic that helped to tie the pavilions to the web. As members of the Ruby Clan, her family and ancestors had long practiced such arts, and Laeli felt like it was a path she herself would like to pursue. Of course, she hoped too for marriage and children of her own, one day. All in all, life for Laeli has been quite enjoyable and filled with love, laughter, many good times and lots of hope for the future. About five years ago, at the age of twelve, Laeli was approached by Jin, a silver blue dun Strider mare. The two shared an afternoon together and at the end of it, Jin had made her choice. She and Laeli became bonded, and in the wake of the girl become a fully fledged Drykas, her parents oversaw the tattooing of wind marks on their only daughter. Since then, the two are, of course, quite inseparable. Laeli also received a gift from her parents on her sixteenth birthday, a male silkena puppy, which she named Jett. Meant more as a pet than a hunting animal, her brothers did train the pup anyway to help them hunt for rabbits and gazelle. Laeli has many Drykas friends, of all ages and genders, and she greatly enjoys socializing with the various pavilions that come and go in Endrykas, as well as riding out short distances into the grasslands with Jin, her brothers and her dog. Life has been pleasant. But the djed storm which came with the changing of the season in Spring, 512, turned all that upside down. Laeli’s family was fortunate in that they were in Endrykas and not off on their own, and so with the others in the traveling city, they went underground. Upon emerging after many days, Laeli and Jin surveyed the scene of destruction with horror. With the rest of the Drykas, Laeli and her family began the journey to Riverfall with quite a strained sense of urgency, and a desolation of spirit that was heretofore unknown in the girl’s heart.
