Yon Reefslip

Physical Description
Race: Svefra
Age: 22
Born: 6th day of Summer 489 AV
Religion: Laviku

Character Concept:
Personality: As a Svefra, Yon has always been at home on the waves of the sea, never growing attached to any one place. He gives off a carefree air and very rarely concerns himself with anything outside of his worldly passions. Valuing a good story or a rare trinket more than coin, Yon is willing to strike the bargain some sailors are too cautious to make, ferrying travelers across the Suvan or moving cargo. He knows or cares little about the lands away from the sea, but dreams of sailing his Coral Star outside of the Suvan Sea and seeing the rest of the world.
Though not overly honorable or good, Yon is proud of his abilities as a sailor and loyal to friends and family. As a Svefra his values are different from most landlubbers, and sometimes it rubs people the wrong way but for the most part Yon tries to be amiable to those he meets. He is somewhat uneasy when on land, mostly staying close to the harbor everywhere he goes.

Physical: He walks light on his feet with the confidence and swagger that comes with knowing you own the sea. His face is youthful and unscarred, though there are some weather beaten lines around his eyes, testament to his Svefran lifestyle. After so many rough and wrong attempts to practice his Hypnotism with his old friend Pomgran Icidus, his gaze has been left with a slightly manic gleam that can sometimes set people on edge.
Wearing light trousers of wool and a thin white shirt, Yon Reefslip sports a battered, though gleamingly sharp, cutlass at his belt, as well as a simple carving knife and a filleting knife. He wears a silken scarf around his head, hanging with bright but common seashells and wooden beads carved into different designs. His sun baked skin is almost always covered in caked sea salt, a reminder that he is never away from the tide for long. His mop of shaggy blonde hair is left unruly from the wind and water.

Character History
Yon spent most of his life on board the lean Shanty’s Shiver, an exploratory treasure hunting ship in southern Suvan Sea under the command of one Lia Della Reefslip. Captain Gullgout taught Yon almost everything he knows about sailing and fishing the Suvan Sea. Earning gold and silver steadily and saving his funds, Yon always dreamed of a ship of his own. As he grew older and more skilled at the mast and rudder, Lia Della noticed him more and more.
His passion for her stories of long lost treasures and fantastical beasts endeared him to her.

When he become old enough and strong enough he was able to purchase his own small sloop, a Casinor he named The Coral Star. Having only paid for a portion of the ship, he borrowed the rest of the money from Lia Della and steadily worked his debt off by selling handmade carvings and using the limited cargo space in his Coral Star to increase the Reefslip’s trade revenue. Steadily he became a better barterer and paid off his debt as well as making the Reefslip pod a profit in traded goods and fish from his net.
But after two years of lucky voyage aboard the Coral Star, Yon and the rest of the Reefslip pod ran afoul of a devilish storm. The Larger Shanty’s Shiver was able to hold up against the vicious winds well and came out relatively unharmed, but the smaller Coral Star was left with a splinted mast and no replacement. After being towed to a dry dock in Riverfall, the Coral Star was left in the care of a trusted friend of the Reefslip pod, and Yon was again a deckhand for Lia Della.

Though the wind was not in his sails, Yon knew his pod would not let him fall afoul of worse luck than already plagued his poor ship. He endeavored to help as much as he could and save up more wealth, looking forward to the improvements he would make on the small sloop.

Shanty’s Shiver came upon a ship that had ran afoul of a vicious reef in the mid Suvan Sea. Climbing aboard with finesse and skill, the Reefslips found a foul sight. All of the crew were dead and half eaten by predators. It looked like a northern ship from Avanthal, filled to the brim with rare furs and huge horns and tusks from the dire boars and elk that lived so far into the snow plagued lands. After finding none alive the Reefslip pod loaded the furs and horns onto their own ship, riding the wind down south to sell the exotic furs and horns. With the profit from that lucky find Lia Della decided it was high time the Reefslip pod had another ship, since the Shanty’s Shiver was growing crowded and the two or three other Casinors were not large enough to fix the problem.

She purchased a ship called Second Wind and placed her nephew Daron Reefslip as captain. She also put Yon on board as navigator. Daron Reefslip was a daring man with little fear of the Sea, though he was always very suspicious of landlubbers and grass kickers. He had been known to clash with pirates as a hobby and often urged Della into many of her dangerous treasure hunting outings. Daron made a big impression on the youthful Yon. He was continuously captivated by the big man’s stories of sea battles and storm riddled voyages.

But even more than Daron, the Kelvic Pomgran Icidus made a standing impression on the young sailor. Pom was a man who had lived on the sea at least as long as Lia Della had, flitting from ship to ship, pirate to merchant, all his life. The man was shifts and mysterious in ways not even Yon, with all his travelings in the pod, had seen before. He had scars from battles with pirates and stories to go with each. Pom began to like telling Yon his stories and hearing the man urge him on in return. Pom taught Yon the cutlass and the two began to practice every day while the salt dog spat his wild tales.

Yon’s favorite was one of when Pom, who was a seagull Kelvic, had broken a wing and been forced to land on a small island somewhere in the southern Suvan. He walked three times around the island on the first day without seeing anyone and decided it safe. But after making camp and at last starting a billowing fire to hopefully signal nearby ships, Pom was surprised to see an old man sitting across the fire from him. The man had approached silently, leaving not a single footfall in the soft white sand of the island.

The man claimed to be the keeper of the island, though his eyes held the unmistakable glint of a madman in them. His beard and hair were dreadlocks of pale grey and a small crab was seen crawling suspiciously through them. He wore a necklace of seashells and carried an empty turtle shell in his hands. Pom told the man his story of shipwreck and flight, then eventual fall to said island. The man was convinced Pom had been sent to him as a sign and held some secret message for him. Over the next few days Pom was cared for with remedies he had never seen and mystic chants and rituals that left him dizzy but whole. The man rarely spoke of himself, instead speaking in the third person, but referring to the island rather than himself. He showed Pom how to gain the trances he went into on a nightly basis and Pom and the old man began to wander about the island and the nearby waters as spirits, leaving their swaying bodies behind on the shoal.

The man taught Pom how to catch fish with his hands and which fruits were ripe enough to eat as well as other things. He taught Pom how to make healing salves in his turtle shell and the rather chaotic art of Hypnotism, though Pom was not very skilled.

But after Pom was wholly healed, and the sun was up on the fourth day, he was totally alone on the island. The man, his dreadlocks, his crab, and his turtle shell were gone. Pom was disappointed and upset that the man would abandon him like that in the middle of the night. But such men must not think of little things like social slights when they do what they do.
Yon liked the story but doubted its truth, telling Pom that the man could not survive on said island alone for so long. Pom tried to prove the story to Yon by teaching him a bit of the Hypnosis that the old witch doctor had showed him. Yon was surprisingly apt at it and began to practice on his own, finding the new skill thrilling.

Eventually the Coral Star was repaired and Yon eagerly set sail with the rest of the Reefslip pod, now numbering two Palivars and five Casinors. The Reefslips made a seasonal voyage up to the northern Suvan and then followed the western coast back down to the southern Suvan, trading and selling the entire time.

"In honest work, the food is bad, the wages are low and the work is hard. In piracy, there is plenty of loot, it's fun and easy and we are free and powerful. Who, when presented with this choice, would not choose piracy? The worst that can happen is you can be hanged. No, a merry life and a short one shall be my motto."

Hello new adventurer!

Welcome to Mizahar! My name is Shepherd, and I am here to assist you in completing your Character Sheet in a manner that is respectful to the Lore and overall theme of Mizahar. I have found a few areas of confusion and error, and I'm here to work with you to set things straight.

Things Needing Fixed

Gnosis
I see you have an Oceanus Gnosis and no Storyteller Secrets thread. You must apply to the HD to get a Gnosis approved.

Heirloom
Your heirloom item is worth more than 50gm limit. Compasses are worth 200gm. Please select something else.

Lores
Navigating the South Suvan Sea is not an appropriate lore without Navigation as a skill.

Minor Notes
These things do not need to be changed, but I would recommend you looking into some adjustments.

Please deduct each item individually in your ledger for easier checking.

Please make the changes I've noted above, and send me a Private Message. Upon receiving your message, and reviewing your changes, I will remove the Intervention. Thank you for coming to Mizahar, and I hope you enjoy writing here.
