History
Leaf was born in slavery to a slave and as a child was branded with the symbol for his status: a partially eclipsed sun.
Leaf's mother belonged to a family of hedonistic men and women and bore a certain beauty to her that suited their tastes finely. She was a Kelvic as well and passed her condition on to her son. She was a bird as well, but rarely was she permitted to shift, and so Leaf had never really seen her as her songbird form.
Leaf's never knew his father either, although he was one of many possible Larks.
Leaf was born an adorable child, but as he grew rapidly in that first year of life, he did not grow to be a beauty like his mother and unknown father. His face was more pointed and fierce than was liked. His redeeming quality was the floral pattern he was born with that seemed to unfurl as he matured.
At a year old, and as a full grown man, Leaf was given to a young child by the name of Elaine Lark. Limited in his capacity by bonding to a child, and totally enthralled by her interest in him, Leaf gladly forgot the name his mother placed on him and took the name the girl gave him: Leaf Tree.
Leaf served this girl happily, content until his gnosis awoke and his mind flared bright. Confused and deeply troubled, but unable to understand just what he was seeing, Leaf stopped sleeping. He feared his mind slipping away into the 'dreams', as he had called them.
The Larks who owned Leaf began to see a benefit in selling Leaf rather than keep him around. A young Kelvic, half mad with lack of sleep and the effects of hypnosis used to force him calm. Paranoid and very troubled by his masters, their tricks to lull him into calm, and the visions of things he had no idea were true, Leaf was disillusioned with his little girl and his family.
Three years old and reaching the prime of his youth, Leaf began to dream of a freedom that would one day be realised.
Leaf was nearly four when he escaped the Larks during the lavish party held as they tried to sell him to any one of their wealthy guests. They thought him docile, the hypnotist used to push his pride behind his fear having perhaps pushed too far and invoking his anger. Or, perhaps the hypnotist had failed to properly influence the Kelvic. The product was the same nontheless, and Leaf fled the Larks and their great disappointment at the mess he had made of their party and their profit.
Freed from his collar finally, Leaf took to the life of his osprey form, living in isolation and fear of being captured and returned to the humans he feared would brutally punish him.
Leaf fled far, crossing woods, forests, tundra, and reaching the high peaks of mountains. He found Wind Reach and was taken by these humans and their affection to their avian fellows. He saw eagles thrice the size of men, and more, revered for their very selves.
Leaf fell in love with these humans, as he had once loved his little human Elaine before he saw her for what she was. It took him some time to return to his human form, and only when he was sure there were clothes at hand to hide the gnosis that had brought him so much pain. He never really forgot the torment of the humans as they used the budding power for themselves, he never forgot how they called for cruel men to come and tie him down using their eyes and words when he was unruly.
An Avora now, Leaf serves his city as a hunter and does his best to keep to himself but for selling his wares. |
