"Serena's not in today. Might I help you?"

Kane'd been watching the young man trot up upon a fine steed, a worthy beast of a knight no doubt, and the two seemed to have been through a bit of toil... no telling what it could've been, though the dirt on them was as plain as day. Still, he seemed to work here, and to be on a first name basis with the owner, and as such that might make him of a position high enough to grant Kane a job...

"Good day to you, rider... eh, I'll cut to the chase, is there any chance for a Job here? Paying or otherwise?"

"I'm Sam," he said by way of greeting, all but vaulting out of the saddle to land on his feet with catlike grace. Whichever knight rode this horse might not be able to duplicate his tricks, but his steed would be prepared if he should make the attempt.

He put out his hand to shake.

"Serena's always willing to hire talented, hard-working people. What's your experience like and what did you have in mind?"

"I'm Sam," Quickly the boy had jauntily left the horse, the skill and balance(not to mention comfort on a horse) required for such a feat likely to be eluding Kane for quite some while, and almost as soon as his feet had landed in the soft blades that covered the stablegrounds was his hand offered forth to shake, and Kane, not wanting to appear rude, firmly took it in his own as he continued, "Serena's always willing to hire talented, hard-working people. What's your experience like and what did you have in mind?"

"Name's Kane, it's a pleasure. Talent... that's something I lack, though I'm very willing to learn." Sighing for a moment, Kane looked to the warhorse the young man had come off of, "Only real experience I've ever had with horses was when I came here from Sunberth. Cut the time in half, effectively, though it wasn't too comfortable... beasts and the like. But, as for the job, I'm trying to get into the Order, as a squire... and the job doesn't pay to well and I have to eat." Squinting as he thought, "I also have to learn to ride, in order to become a knight. Figured that I might try to get a two-for-one going on."

"Well, you might be surprised," he said in conspiratorial tones. "Some of the knights ride like lumpy sacks of potatoes." He grinned. "But, well, Serena does have a spot in her heart for the knights, so if it's to help you prepare for becoming a knight, she might just take you on despite lack of know-how. Pay probably won't be stellar, but it's something.

"Why don't you come by tomorrow at dawn and we'll show you the proper way to muck out a stable?"

OOCI'm fairly sure Dusk will give Kane a job, but you two will have to talk about his wages. No rush, as that doesn't all have to be figured out until the end of the season.

Sam was right, something was much better than nothing, and nothing was all he had at the moment. Nothing didn't put food in his belly, and Kane could use the experience, and soon Sam continued, "Why don't you come by tomorrow at dawn and we'll show you the proper way to muck out a stable?"

"Sure thing. I'll be here at sunup..." Pausing for a moment, Kane soon continued, unsure of how to word his next question, "Is there anything I need to do today?... Or should I take my leave?"

"Well," he said thoughtfully, then glanced at the filthy destrier, "Astyanax needs some serious grooming. You could help me with that. I could show you how to do it correctly, especially if you're going to have one of your own someday. You can't always depend on squires and grooms to take care of your battlesteed."

OOCWhy don't you start a new thread and we'll get us some XP in Horsemanship, and when Dusk awards XP, you'll have some skills you'll need for the job.

My name is Mankros, and Trega from the employment office said that there might be a job for me here.

"There might be," Sam allowed noncommittally. He was trying not to be such an easy sell these days; Selena was trying to teach him a thing or two about management skills. But he didn't stop currying the Tiaden's coat while he spoke to the man, Mankros by name. He did offer a small smile.

"Why don't you tell me what you're looking for and what your qualifications are," he said, trying not to puff up too much at being Serena's gatekeeper.

"I just need something that pays enough for food and a stall for my horse, and food and a little spending money for myself; I keep a tent, though, and would like to know where I could pitch it," Mankros replied, taking in the familiar smell of hay, manure, oats, and leather. "I would also, if it is not too much trouble," he continued, "like to know the proper procedures for buying and carrying a weapon in the city; I know the knights are here to uphold the law, but a visible hilt or quiver just makes their job that much easier."

"Well, all right," he said, scratching his head. "Your wants aren't out of the question, but I still don't know what you're capable of... And as for weapons, well, the knights have never given me trouble for going around armed. I suppose if they think you look suspicious, they'll stop you. But if you want the law, I'd go to the horse's mouth, so to speak. Find a knight and ask them if you need to register or something like that."

He smiled vaguely, hoping he was helping, but Mankros seemed vague himself.
