A half-collapsed city of alabaster and gold fiercely governed by Eypharians. Even partially ruined, it is the crown of the desert and a worthy testament to old glories and rising powers.

Shena suspected there was more to this man. He seemed quite sound and not the soul-searching type he claimed to be. Everyone had their secrets – even her- so she supposed she couldn’t judge him on that alone. By far, he was the friendliest person she’d come across in a long time. Even for Benshira standards, he hadn’t become annoyed with her so called lack of respect for the greater sex. The though alone made her dark gaze flit skyward for the briefest of moments. ”I should hope not.” she said blithely, her brows rising slightly as if questioning herself. ”I’m not the type to cause trouble.” Her words were presented in obvious fairytale and she looked at him carefully. Perhaps he would leave now in hopes to avoid any trouble that might befall her as it usually did. Or perhaps he would stick around but not because he believed what she said.

The silence behind them deafened her ears and she grew still immediately. As though prompted by her stillness, a shrill shriek let out behind them and Shena threw herself into motion. Her gaze fell on someone, no, a group of someones trying to get away with Emi. A string of unladylike words flew from her lips in a slur of Benshira language and inventive slang. I spoke too soon it seems… she thought frantically as she picked up a rock and threw it at one of the men with surprisingly good aim. Though she didn’t stand still long enough to see the rock had cracked him in the shoulder; Shena was already scrambling for another rock.

She didn’t see who but someone made quick work of her and shoved her over and mounted Emi – who was still shrieking as though he’d been stabbed. ”No!” she yelled as she scrambled to her feet and batted her hair out of her face with her hand. She lifted her hand to her lips and a low pitched whistle let out and it took a minute for it to register but Emi lay down. By the time Emi hit the ground, Shena already had a sizeable rock in her hand raised and ready to hurl at someone.

What had happened was far too fast and surprising for Hirem to get a sense of the current situation, but he knew from the horrible sinking feeling in his gut that he was dead. One mishap in his supposed warrior senses prevented him from stopping this, and now, far as he could tell, Shena was trying to thwart a group of horse robbers very loudly. Hirem already knew guards were coming, and his initial response was to flee now and escape... but he couldn't do that just yet.

As fast as he could, he bolted over to the struggling Shena and quickly grabbed her arm, causing the rock to tumble down onto his foot. He winced in pain as he gave her a hard pull away from the robbers, exclaiming, "No! Stop!" Shena began to violently struggle with him as he angled his face to the robbers, and roared out the same command. "Leave the horse be and go, you thieves!" He added on to the end, if only to convince Shena that he was trying to help her.

If he let this go on without him, he would feel terrible for allowing her to deal with these criminals without his help, and so this was the course he chose. His only hope now was to resolve this quickly and without blood so that the guard would ignore the incident. If they took a close look at his features, he would be lost once again in another prison, or even killed on the spot.

She eyed and pinpointed the first bastard she would pummel with the rock she held in her hand. She did have a knife tucked away somewhere but she wasn’t that brave. Only the one she’d hit previously was paying attention to her and probably hoping she wouldn’t hone in on him again because he was being more cautious than before. Shena smirked and then pulled her arm back to make sure she got a lot of power behind her throw.

Having Labran come up behind her and grab her arm startled her and also produced a curse from her as the rock fell from her hand and onto his foot. Instead of letting her retrieve he it held her still as he could amongst her struggling. By the time he was confronting the group trying to take Emi from her, she was glaring at him vehemently; more confused than anything until she realized he was helping her. Her expression quickly turned apologetic then approving before she looked back to the group of men. Only one of them seemed to heed the warning blatantly by taking off down the street.

Shena looked at Emi, who was nickering repeatedly, obviously talking to her and in that moment she wished she could speak horse. Strangest thing but she felt like he was asking for help. The men – a total of three – standing around him just stood there and looked at the pair of them. Are they waiting for a trick or something? she thought to herself and began muttering under her breath and tugging lightly against Labran’s grip to test it and see if still held strong.

And armored man on a black horse caught her eye and she yelped gleefully. ”Over here! Help!” It was everything she could do not to jump up and down. ”Help u….” her eyes grew as wide as saucers as something flew past her and Labran and hit a door to a building behind them. She didn’t have to look to know what it was. ”What the hell was that?” she gasped in bewilderment. She looked back up at the guard who was aiming another arrow and she cursed under her breath.

OOC: Feel free to use Emi or drag Shena wherever need be. lol

Hirem followed the yelling of Shena and saw the armored man on the horse just before he pulled up a bow. Hirem felt his heart sink with foreboding; he knew what would follow. Sure enough, a black arrow slammed into a building near them, too close for comfort. Hirem cursed himself as he started to move, dragging the stunned Shena towards her horse. "Hik!" He yelled as another arrow sailed dangerously close to them, and he turned his head to the robbers. They were all fleeing in different directions, avoiding the guardsman. Hirem wished he could follow, but Shena was in danger and that needed to be rectified.

He felt her start to resist less as she came into terms with the danger, and he let his arm go, hurrying over to the horse. All the while he was trying to instruct her over the rising beat of his heart and adrenaline, knowing full well the archer was going to hit him at any second. "Get on your horse, and run. Don't stop, just keep riding." Once they were close enough, he gave her a hard push that nearly sent her ramming into the horse, instead just bumping up against the flank of the now standing horse.

He was about to tell her more when yet another arrow was set loose, and it had a successful flight as it slid across his leg, ripping clothes and drawing blood, bouncing harmlessly into the ground. Hirem grimaced in pain, and, without any thought or plan, turned about and ran straight for the nearest open alleyway, leaving Shena with her horse. Yahal, help Shena'Doah. Guide her path as you have mine.

She looked around her and yelled at one of the nearest men who tried to take Emi just before he disappeared around a dark corner. They would run just like the cowards they were. Of course that was exactly what she was about to do but she did nothing wrong. ”You’re shooting at the wrong people you idiot!” she snapped over her shoulder even though she was sure the guard couldn’t hear her at this distance. Not that he wasn’t getting closer because he most certainly was. Turns out he wasn’t alone either because as Shena bounced off the side of Emi, she glanced up towards the guard in a daze to see there were two of them. She had to look again to make sure she wasn’t seeing double.

Labran didn’t have to tell her that twice because as soon as she regained her bearings she was leaping onto Emi’s back and grabbing his reins. ”Get…on.” she started to yell at him when another arrow flung past and she hear something rip and looked at Labran’s face. Her words quickly lost their gusto for a moment as she stared at him. Then he began to run away and the gaped, ”Wh-where are you going? Don’t be an idiot, Emi can get us out of here fast than you can get anywhere on your own two feet!” she yelled at his back but he was gone and down an alley already.

She clicked her tongue and gave a pressured nudge with her legs to jumpstart Emi into a flat gallop. The guards were already getting close enough for her own comfort and sticking around wasn’t something she wanted to do. Shena leaned as low as she could to Emi without being completely reckless and glanced over her shoulder to see one guard go down the alley that Labran had went down while the other continued straight… after her. She quickly decided that now would be a good time to get off a busy street and take advantage of the vacant streets in the morning. She pull lightly at the reins and Emi, like a fine-tuned instrument, turned sharply down a narrow alley.

Another few turns and she found herself heading for a bridge and urged Emi to go faster as she guard appeared a distance behind her. An arrow whizzed past her and she gasped and hugged herself closer to Emi. This couldn’t go on forever, though, she had to lose the guard and with that she made the first turn past the bridge and quickly dismounted after telling Emi to return to their campsite. She collided with a building wall pretty much as she tried to tuck and roll; laying on her stomach, she lifted her head to see Emi disappear around a corner and she had to quickly make herself invisible. Which she did and prayed that it would work as she simply lifted her cloak’s hood, turned her back and began walking.

He knew that Shena would be as confused as anyone could get, but he had hoped that the two guards would hurry after him and leave her alone, but that was a fool's wish. When he finally rounded the corner of the long alley, he knew that only one guard was sending his horse after him; the other was going after Shena. Damn it.

He knew the guard was likely barreling up the alley at that very moment, so he had little time to think. To his left was more alleys, leading into the labyrinthine underground of Ahnatep, but by the time he ran that direction, the guard would be right on top of him. He spied the ground for a moment, and grinned as he bent down and grabbed a large chunk of brick that had fallen from the building he was leaning against. He stood ramrod stiff as he heard the hooves beat into the ground become louder... and louder... his heart was beating with anticipation... finally, when it felt like the guard was right on top of him, he roared, and swung the brick as high as he could reach around the corner.

It was a lucky blow indeed, as the guard had come charging up the corner and was smashed in the torso by the chunk of brick. The strike was enough to cause the man to grunt in pain and tip to the wounded side, and then he fell off the horse like a stone. The horse felt it's rider drop, and drew it's legs up in an indignant cry before charging down the alleys, Hirem throwing himself to the side to dodge the beast.

That move allowed the guard to groan in agony as he pushed himself onto his knees, holding his side as he caught his breath. Hirem quickly sprinted towards the man, and once he was in reach, lashed out with a vicious kick that was aimed towards the neck. His foot slammed into the guard's throat with as much force as he could muster, and with a strangled cry, the guard fell over onto his side.

He didn't waste any time in running; he only stopped to grab the only thing that he could from the guard, the bow that had been used to shoot at him. It was a nice, supple shortbow that he admired for only an instant before beginning his desperate run once more. He thought about hiding for a second before one, overwhelming thought filled his mind. Shena is still in peril. Recalling the direction she had taken, he began to weave his way through the streets, ignoring the pain in his leg or the fact that she was on Emi and much faster than him. He needed to make sure she was alive and well before he did anything else.

It took everything in her power not to slump against the cool brick of the building next to her as she heard the heavy beating of the hooves get loud and begin echoing down the alley then fade rather quickly. It had worked. The darkness of the alley had disguised the color of her cloak but she just as quickly united it and left it where it was and began tying her hair in a braid and securing the braid with the string she’d ripped from her cloak.

She continued walking, completely out of breath and trying to hear the hoof beats over the sound of her labored breathing. The very moment she could no longer hear them she took off in a sprint to get as far away from her current location and her cloak as possible. So much for buying a bow… she thought and began to wonder how long it would be till she could visit the market again. Hopefully it wouldn’t take very long for the people to forget what happened and forget her face.

Fighting the urge to just lay down and curl up in a little ball, she slowed back down to a brisk walk and began to puzzle over why her legs hadn’t given out on her. It had been a while since she’d ran so much. Above it all, she couldn’t be more angry with what had happened. Those bastards wouldn’t know a horse thief if it stole their mount right out from under them! Angry thought coursed through her mind as her brisk walk began to take on a march-like cadence. She finally stopped and looked around. She hadn’t left the confinement of the dark alleys and was convinced that she probably wouldn’t until nightfall. Not being on a main street also meant she would be lost until nightfall as well…

The cloak was hers, Hirem realized as he examined the green fabric. It had been laying over the ground, flat and spread out. Someone had been wearing it, and then they pulled it off and let it hit the ground as it was. That meant she was probably still alive. Probably. Hirem grabbed the thing and crumpled it into a large heap that he tucked under his arm, glancing about. He must have looked quite the criminal, clothes ripped, blood trailing down his leg and a dead man's bow held tightly in his grip.

Noon was coming soon now, and more people were coming out of their houses and, conversely, more guards were beginning their patrols. Now, almost every guard in this section of the city would have began to search for them, scouring every nock and cranny. He had to avoid a few on coming here, and it looked like his search wasn't going to stop just now, either.

He began to run down the alleys, trying to traverse the chaotic maze of the sprawling city, pausing every little while to consider his location and hers. He really was searching randomly, as the ground held no secret tracks and she had left no markers to guide him. It was now up to Yahal to guide him, as the god often had. He combed through the streets for her, dodging guards and beggars, keeping his eyes alert for any sign of her he could find.

Finally, in a long narrow alley that seemed to go on forever, with the walls almost crushing the travelers to death, he spotted someone that seemed to be wearing her clothes. Eager to find her again, he quickly jogged over to the woman, calling Shena's name in a loud enough tone for the woman to hear him.

She tried to think of places she could go in this city where she could hide out but didn’t know any. Few who passed her chose to bother her let alone acknowledge her presence as usual. But Shena knew all too well – even if she didn’t really live in the city – that the streets would become more crowded and harder to navigate as the day led on. It was also getting hotter and dryer as the sun loomed above and made shadows scarce. ”What a day this has turned out to be…” she muttered under her breath.

Someone behind her called her name and she didn’t have to look to know who it was. First, she turned to look at him and see if he was still in one piece. Second, she looked blatantly at his leg. Third, she glared daggers at him with fists clenched at either side. ”Oh, it’s good to see that you are okay…” she said flatly before having a sudden urge to slap him and stepping back to prevent herself from doing it. ”But what was that in the market?” she snapped venomously at him and turning around to walk off and then wound up marching right back at him. ”I was having a damn good day before…before… all this!” she exclaimed, waving a finger at him even though she hadn’t been having that great of a day.

Shena realized the situation and calmed down. ”You do realize I can’t show my face here for possibly a long time.” she remarked flatly. ”That would require me to uproot myself completely.” she added as her gaze fell back to his leg and she grimaced in irritation. ”You couldn’t even take the time to cover that?”

Even though Hirem knew she wasn't in that great of a mood, he had hoped that she'd just be relieved to see him. Instead, she was angry, and he could not blame her in the slighest. Given her position, it was a wonder she wasn't hitting him in the gut by now. A wonder that was indeed lucky for him. Nobody would want to anger this woman if they knew her well enough.

He took a deep breath, and bowed his head in shame. "I know that, and I apologize from the depths of my heart for that." He glanced around, and shook his head in frustration, letting his grip on both her cloth and the bow tighten momentarily before he let his back hit the wall, and he slowly slid down to a sitting position. "I promise, I will get you of this city, and I will you everything. But right now isn't the time to tell a lengthy tale."

He glanced down at his leg, and noticed the nasty condition it was in. He slowly ripped some of the tattered cloth on the leg and tied it tightly around the wound, letting his head rock back and hit the wall once he was finished. Then, as if suddenly remembering, he stood up once more, and handed her the cloak. "You left this in the alley. I thought you'd want it back."
