Morwen's Lights Jewelry - Window Shopping ( Hadrian )

Postby Talhar on April 18th, 2010, 10:15 pm

Drydas was out for the time being so Talhar managed the shop on his own, he was organizing the merchandise, which was quite diverse. The shop had carved trinkets, all kinds of jewelry, miniature sculptures, larger sculptures, staves, wands, bows, masks, ...

But unfortunately the etalage and the exterior of the shop were still quite shabby-looking so not many customers came to buy something or to order a specific item.

So Talhar made a pact with himself, if he cleaned up the shop and organized an enticing window etalage he would buy himself a nice, fresh pint at the bar later today.

He got the cleaning, organizing and dusting done by noon but Talhar still hadn't gotten around to carving a beautyful plank to put above the door or window.
Something which he try to do later today though. For now he just sat on a chair outside the shop, relaxing in the sun and watching the birds fly by.

Hadrian knew his way around Zeltiva rather well after living there for going on four years, always exploring. Walks helped him think, and he often needed a little something like that to help him work around a new problem posed by a book, an idea, or a professor. In any case, he had passed by Morwen's Lights on more than one occasion, but it wasn't its shabby exterior that kept him out. He just always seemed to walk by when it was closed.

Not so today.

Looking at the man leisurely taking the spring sun in his chair, he changed course for the shop. Upon closer inspection, the young man looked like he might just be a Vantha; not unheard of in these parts, but the thought recalled to mind childhood travels with his father to far ports, Avanthal being one of them.

"Hello," he said. "Is the shop open today?"

Talhar was gazing at the different shapes of clouds floating by and he had just found an interesting contortion of a cloud bend in such a way that it resembled a moving seashell, when he was awoken from his relaxing view of the sky by a friendly voice who asked him if the shop was open today.

Since they didn't get many customers Talhar hadn't expected this sudden arrival of a client and nearly toppled backwards out of his chair since he was leaning backwards while eyeing the clouds.

" Certainly mate, feel free to look around in- and outside the shop as you please. "

Talhar responded with genuine friendlyness and not the silky, friendly woven words that alot of shopkeepers use to imitate friendlyness.

Hadrian smiled apologetically at the near disaster of a tipped over chair. It would have been just his luck to find the place finally open and then injure the proprietor, losing any chance at a good business network due to sheer dumb luck.

"My apologies for startling you," he said, smoothly. His manner was relatively urbane in a business setting, but not insincere. He had grown up the son of a merchant prince in Syliras and he had absorbed more from his father than he was usually wont to admit. That didn't mean he wouldn't try to foist off the business aspects of his work to others, such as Fallan, if he was given the right opportunity and a good deal. It wasn't that he couldn't be his own business manager, merely that he would prefer to focus on the creative aspects of his work.

From what he could see of the étalage, it was clean and simply arranged. The wares on display were interesting, drawing his eye. Wanting a closer look, he nodded to the man and walked through the door to explore the innards of the shop.

" Aye no worries mate, it was the only way to get me to wake up from my cloudy vision I reckon. "

Talhar saw that the man was browsing through the wares in the window and responded his nod with a broad gesture of his hand as to say " Please, feel free to check everything out.", He followed the man inside and went to stand behind the counter, in case there was any information the man required.

Talhar was eager to provide information without even being asked for it but he knew it was wiser to give the client room and to not disturb him too much.

All that he saw made him want to learn Legacy, but there were no professors currently able to teach the shamanic arts, and so he would have to find one in Cyphrus or somewhere. Eventually. But he was pleased by the level of craftsmanship -- not masterworks, but whoever had carved the things had obviously been careful and worked creatively within the limits of his or her training. There was often a gap between someone's level of skill and their level of potential, and these works definitely showed potential at the very least.

"Are you from Avanthal, sir?" he asked respectfully when he had seen as much as he could handle at one time.

" Aye I am sir, left Avanthal about a season ago and started my world journey right here, in Syliras. But I needed some more coins to fund it ya know, so I startd this little temporary shop. "

" Are you a local resident of Syliras sir? "
Talhar responded.

" I do believe I have seen you in town on a few occasions but I'm not quite sure. "

He blinked, wondering how someone could travel the world and not know where he was exactly.

"Ah, that's interesting. We're in Zeltiva, though. The Sylira region, but the city of Zeltiva." It was embarrassing to point out, but he figured the man would appreciate being corrected politely. Hadrian knew he hated misspeaking. It was like having a booger hanging out of one's nose and nobody letting one know, which only prolonged exposure and increased embarrassment when one finally realized...

"You might have seen me. I've been at the university here for going on four years. I haven't been to Avanthal in years..."

Talhar showed a healthy rose tint on his otherwise brownish skin, he was indeed embarassed and not just a little. His brain seemed to have a major malfunction from staring at the sky too long.

" Wow, can't believe I misspoke like that. And the worst part is I didn't even notice it myself. Thanks for correcting me. "

" Wow so you're a scholar at the university, that's fascinating. What are you learning there? "

Before Hadrian could answer Talhar continued his flustered rambling, he was clearly trying to erase the memory of feeling so ashamed for not even knowing where he was.

" Oohh so you've been to the beautyful land of Morwen before? That's great, I hope you had a pleasent time there. Morwen's love spreads to all people, not just the residents of Avanthal. But I'm talking too much about Morwen, but please forgive me mentioning her name one final time. Have you seen the magnificent radiant sight that is Morwen's Lights ? "

"I have," he assured the shopkeeper, kindly following his verbal lead so as to assuage his embarrassment. It reminded him of the time when he had blatantly used the wrong word in front of his very first professor at the University of Zeltiva in front of the entire class, and how his face had turned as red as a boiled lobster.

Yes, it was best to laugh those things off if possible, or at least hurry along and pretend they didn't happen.

"I was young, traveling with my father. He's a trader." He made a habit of downplaying the eminence of his father amid the merchants of Syliras. Somehow the wealth of his family was embarrassing too, as if as a poor little rich boy, his own life was not as valuable for all his toils. "But I did see them. They were beautiful."
