Petpapaysa the Philterer

Physical Description
Name:Petpapaysa
Race: Chaktawe
Age: 21
Birthday: Spring 12, 491

Character Concept
Despite the prevelance of both, Petpapaysa doesn't believe in either gods or magic - only power. Believing all things come down to holding or lacking power, she aims to elevate herself and her people until they hold enough of that power to be excused from the whims of 'greater beings'.

Guardian
None, Petpapaysa did not complete her searching.

Physical Description
Short and tanned, the Chaktawe woman looks perpetually fierce and irritated. Her natural expression is a grimace, and her default posture is as if she's ready to pounce. Despite her long absence from her tribe and sedentary city lifestyle, she still moves as if everything she does is the prelude to a lethal strike - she was taught to think and act as a hunter, and she still does. Being only modestly curvy, her body type isn't typically easy to discern because of the heavy leather she wears as she works, but when she wants attention she's shown no reservations about using a corset to enhance and draw attention to her shape. She seems to be perpetually adverse to wearing shoes. For her small stature, Bastard Swords are the perfect two-handed weapon - she keeps her own in a harness that she straps to her back much like a quiver. While her swordplay leaves something to be desired, she tends to draw the weapon with a convincing flourish.

Personality
Petpapaysa has an awful habit of assuming everybody she meets is an idiot - be they wise men, wizards, or experts of any field, it is her first instinct to assume that they are perpetually on the verge of making simple mistakes and critically wrong assumptions. She doesn't even appear to trust herself; she measures everything she does in triplicate, is constantly testing the potency of even simple and easy things she creates, and looks up recipes that she has memorized. Petpapaysa doesn't tolerate preventable mistakes, being harsh on others, and doubly harsh upon herself.

While she detests the Gods and Goddesses for their beneveloance and ire both, she knows better than to speak ill of them - she is even of the habit of keeping her bad attitude away from holy men, simply because she wishes to avoid the attention of the gods until she is ready to do away with them - and she doesn't anticipate that happening for several decades.

She does tend to talk down at most people, even friends, as a matter of habit, making exceptions only when she needs something - she tends to be perfectly sweet and mildly flirtatious to men in general, purely because she would like to manipulate them, whether for better prices, more information, or exclusion from confrontation. While she's aware that there are occasionally women also attracted to her, she tends to falter embarrassingly when attempting similar romantic manipulation.

Being a woman in Riverfall has exposed her to the solicitations of men in both romantic and non-romantic contexts in high number - devoted to her trade, she has managed to use the dangerous fumes that sometimes come with philtering as an excuse to avoid any chance of pregnancy. Her insistence is that her trade helps nourish the plants and people of Riverfall, so while some may not agree with the reasoning, most accept her claimed purpose.

Character History
Petpapaysa had no love for the culture of her people. Being spiritual desert nomads who seemingly lived forever under the boots of Eypharians and Gods to access water didn't sit well with her as a child, and the moment she was sent on her searching to pray to for guidance she stopped pretending to value her upbringing. Finding a corpse in the desert to take clothes from and wiping the stripe from her face, she tagged along with a caravan into Ahnatep, looking for somebody to apprentice under when she should have been seeking Makutsi. She eventually found work under a philterer, doing basic things to help like crushing up reagants in exchange for food and a floor to sleep on. After two seasons of that, she found herself trusted enough to go out and buy ingrediants needed, taking orders, and doing minor administrative work to free up the time of the philterer for actual philtering. Two years of that and he begrudgingly took her on as an apprentice, teaching her the very basics and allowing her to create easy potions and philters so that again his free time could be devoted to more advanced work.

She was just beginning to become competent in her own right when he asked her to leave and never return: his wife had not been happy when she learned that he was secretly keeping a pretty chaktawe in his shop. He gave her the set of books that helped him learn philtering, and sent her on her way.

She made friends with a svfera woman and in exchange for help waterproofing her clothes was allowed to accompany her to Riverfall. She'd wanted to go to the city percisely because of the gender imbalance; being a woman among an all male culture was another ounce of power she could have. She had trouble accruing the capital to purchase what she needed to start philtering on her own, instead taking small jobs helping in kitchens and vinyards, trying to accrue the understanding of the city and it's people so that she could either save up the Mizas or make a good enough pitch to the council to open her own lab and shop.

The books are "A Philterer's Guide to Boating" about low heat alternatives to standard recipes to avoid setting fire to boats, "A Philterer's Guide to Zeltiva" which appears to mostly be a story about how the author was banished from the city, "A Philterer's Guide to Taloba" Which briefly details how the author used the region's plants to evade predation, and "Philterer's Guide to Ekytol" Which is mostly incorrect musings about why it's impossible to find useful reagents in Ekytol. Sloppily copied over from other books, the short texts are estimated to be worth about 11 gm each. In the books, the author frequently refers to things as impossible - many of which she saw done succesfully during her apprenticeship. As inspiration to forge her own path, they're invaluable, and as a guide for philtering, they make for a good laugh.
