Jarth
A Seeker of Knowledge

Image

Basic Information

Race: Jamoura
Birthday & Age : Winter 300 AV
Gender: Male

Physical Description
Like other members of his race, Jarth has fur covering his entire body. He is about 7’10”, making him slightly shorter than the average male in the Jamoura. He weighs 535 pounds, which makes him slimmer for his kind. Even so, it is clear he is just as muscular as other males and is quite physical. Even though his size may offset some people, it seems that he almost has gentle features. As said before, he is not quite as large as other males, but his size can still be imposing. His face seems to be warm and inviting, however, and he tries to keep his body from looking dominating. His fur is jet black and kept tidy. He prides himself on looking his best and sticks to it. He rarely wears anything on his body, but if he does it will normally be a form of tarp. He only wears this, however, if the weather is very bad. On the most part, however, he enjoys almost any weather. Other than that, there is little that changes in how he looks.

Character Concept
Jarth is a very inventive person and is open to most ideas. He does not like to discredit something before there is any truth against it. Even so, if he had a predetermined idea in his mind he will lean more towards evidence that supports it. He is a very curious person and is willing to go to great lengths to gain new and valuable knowledge. In these kinds of pursuits, he is not in the least bit cautious and will be quite straight-forward. Otherwise, however, he will normally be a conservative person. He does appreciate many art forms, but feels that there could be a better use of the intellect of people. Nature is beautiful on its own. Why should mere mortals try to alter to replicate its beauty? He greatly appreciates the differences among people and each individual personality. He has always had a sense of adventure since he was told of the outside world, and loves the thought that there are so many more unusual ideas and experiences out in the world to be found.

Jarth believes that all work should be efficient. If there is no new knowledge or benefit to be gained from something, he views it as wasted time. In this way, he views much of humanity as a useless struggle fighting over and over without ever learning or gaining new insight. He is also very organized, seeing as someone cannot be efficient if they do not have a set plan. He does not like continuously careless people, but views a little risk as a necessity for life. He shows a high level of self-discipline and follows his beliefs to the letter. He will act dutifully to his elders and others he sees as important. If he views someone as low life or something similar, he will often speak harshly to them. He has also been known to enjoy using sarcasm frequently and to try to trick people. In this way, he has a rather good sense of humor but he can get touchy on several topics.

For the most part, Jarth is outgoing. Like many of the other members of his species, though, he does not make friends with very many people. He is not a very energetic person, but prefers to take his time with most things. Due to the fact that he limits his relationships, many other species would view him as withdrawn. That is simply just how most of his people act though. As of recently, he has started to open up more due to his travels. He does not normally have much of a sense of urgency as said above. He believes that things will change with time. Even so, there are certain topics and things that he sees as needing to be done. When this is the case, he will be very forward and will push for things to be accomplished.

Although it would not seem the case at first, Jarth is quite the friendly person. The simple fact is that very few ever actually break through his outer coldness. He does not like to be cold towards others, but knows that he should not try to connect himself too closely with people that die much faster than him. Once he does establish a friendship, though, he will be very compassionate and cooperative. He will often push for his friends’ wishes and will also often adapt his own outlooks on life. This goes along with the fact that he is quite an outspoken individual and will rarely back down from his own beliefs. This is not to say that he is suspicious of others, but he feels that it is best to stick to his own core thoughts and beliefs. This allows him to open into new thoughts and ideas, without ever actually losing himself.

Jarth is a rather sensitive person and responds to others’ well. This is not always apparent due to his cold attitude to a lot of people. He seems to always be secure in his beliefs and rarely doubts himself. When he does question himself, though, it can lead to a long period of pondering and configuration in his life. Once he thinks that he has adjusted himself appropriately, he will return quite confident in his new ideal. He does not experience too many negative emotions and is not very prone to breakdowns. If he endures a large amount of pressure, though, he can get rather feisty and may snap at people. He tries to avoid this as much as possible, viewing any descent back into primal instincts to be a negative thing.

Character History
Jarth was born into a rather small family in the Spires. His family unit consisted of an Alpha Male with two females. He was one of three children, the other two being older than him. His brother was much older than him, soon having his 200th birthday. This signalled that he would soon be leaving to establish himself and go on his own way. Before he did, however, he felt that he should teach his younger brother the ropes of the forest. This allowed him to get access to the forest even from a very young age. At the same time, his sister would tell him stories of everything wide and far. His sister was closer to his age, just recently leaving childhood. This allowed her to share his sense of imagination, while still having a solid foundation for the stories and ideas. These early years with his siblings greatly shaped his future and the person he would become.

As he grew older, his brother soon left to go start his own life. Before he had left though, Jarth had learned the basics of hunting and surviving in the forest. He would still have much to learn, but this gave him a good start in the field. His sister, however, remained and continued to teach him what she knew. This led to a strong relationship forming with his sister and her ideas. One thing that greatly influenced him was her stories of the outside. She had never been outside of the forest herself, but had heard many stories from others about it. She always had wanted to venture to the outside herself, but she knew she really was not up to the task. She thought that her brother might be able to venture out one day. Through him, she could learn what the rest of the world was really like.

As time passed, he started to spend less time with his family and sister. He would often wander into the forest for days at a time trying to better find himself. After dozens of these small ventures, he eventually found a small clearing that looked as if it had never been touched. He found the site so beautiful and pure that he would often go there for days at a time. He also decided that he would meditate in the area from then on. He found that the spot helped relax him and clarify his thoughts. Much of his time was spent in this area, which greatly affected his growing ideas about life and increased his respect for nature and what the world had to offer. This, along with his teachings, began to set his thoughts and his desire to explore.

When Jarth started to get older, more responsibility was placed on him. He was soon responsible for more of the hunting and gathering of food in general. At first, he would go along with large parties to collect food. This was mainly to get the younger members ready for more independence and give them practice. With more and more trips, however, the numbers of people going lessened and lessened. Eventually, he was assigned to go on his first solo hunting mission. This was a large day in his life, for it would show that he could handle himself and become a contributing factor to the community.

The day of the hunt started as any other. He got up slightly before the sun rose to make sure all of his items were together. After he had made sure everything was ready, he headed out of his home and into the forest. He knew several good spots already from his previous hunts and was quick to set his traps before most of the wildlife would wake up. He placed the traps along several popular walkways and around sources of water. By the time all of his traps had been set, the sun was already over the horizon and slowly creeping up. Now that he was done setting his traps, though, he could shift his focus to searching for plants and other forms of fauna. Many plants in the region were quite good to eat and were enjoyed by his people. At the same time, though, there were just as many that would kill someone pretty thoroughly. Even something as big as a Jamoura had to worry about the potency of some of the plants.

As morning passed into afternoon, he continued to collect different plant specimens. He always found it interesting and puzzling that civilization outside of the forest relied so heavily on created things. Nature seemed to provide anything someone would ever need. He supposed that some peoples were just too greedy and had destroyed what they were given. In those ways he never thought he would be able to understand other societies. It seemed that most sentient species shared underlying basic characteristics. After that, though, there were very few similarities to be drawn. He would definitely have to put some thought to that in the future.

Time passed much more quickly than he had expected when he was pondering and collecting. When he looked back into the sky, the sun was already setting with the horizon turning into dusk. The view was quite beautiful, but he knew that he had little time to gaze at it. He still had to check his traps and set up camp for the night. While he could return that night, he did not believe that he had gotten enough for the hunt to be considered successful. He decided that it would be best to concentrate on making a form of shelter for the night. Waiting until the morning to check his traps would not matter too much. After all, a dead animal was a dead animal.

With time being so important, he made quick work of finding a suitable area to sleep. He soon stumbled upon a small cove that had been created by the collapse of an older tree. It had clearly been some time since it had come done, for plants had already begun to overtake the area. After clearing a small area out in about fifteen minutes, he decided that it was suitable enough for him to sleep in. He did not expect that much trouble from the wildlife, but thought it would be best to move some rocks around the area. It would not truly protect him, but it would make him harder to spot and give him some piece of mind. By the time he had finished his small clearing, dusk had turned into night. He quickly settled himself on the softened ground and fell into sleep.

The next morning held the sounds of small birds chirping and the smell of the forest. After a stretch or two, Jarth felt that he was ready for the coming day. He decided that it was high time to check his traps. About half of the ones along the path had actually caught something. That was not too bad considering those mainly relied on luck. The ones near water fared better. About three out of every four contained a caught animal. A few of the other ones seemed to have been sprung, but nothing was actually caught. That either meant that the animal had escaped or that something else had decided to have a snack. He hoped it was the prior, but by the looks of nearby footprints and blood he assumed it was the latter. He supposed he really could not do anything about it now though. He just needed to collect the unused traps and make sure everything was accounted for. After that, he could stock what he had gotten so far and see if he could head back.

After spending a good hour collecting the rest of his traps, he placed everything out. He had collected enough plants to completely fill his sack so he knew that he would have to find another way to carry the animals he had caught. No single one was much larger than ten or twenty pounds. That would make it fairly easy to carry over his shoulder if it was necessary. With this in mind, he slung his sack other one side of his body to keep both of his arms open. This would allow his to carry the animals he had caught, while keeping the extra traps along his waist in a form of belt he had made. It was not the best looking thing, but it worked to make sure everything stayed where it needed to be. The only major down side with it, besides fashion of course, was that it did limit his mobility. He was in no real hurry, though, so he did not see the harm. As long as he was back by the end of the night and did not have to stop he would be fine.

Towards the end of the afternoon, the outskirts of the Spires came into view. He was soon within the premises with all of his catch. Many of the younger Jamoura were astonished with his catch and were asking him all kinds of questions about it. He hardly had time to answer any of them before he had reached his household. After telling them enough to let him pass, he went in to show what he had found. At first, his father did not say anything but just inspected what was there. He was very difficult to read and could have been thinking almost anything at the time. When he looked back up with a smile on his face, though, Jarth knew he had succeeded.

From that point forward, Jarth was sent on frequent hunting missions for his family. While he was out on these hunts, he would often ponder life and meditate in the free time he had. This time was quite plentiful actually since there was little else to do while he was out on extended trips. Even in all of this time, he had yet to leave the forest. While this was not too strange for a member of his species, the outside world still called to him. Seeing as he had moved on from basic childhood, he felt that he would put the idea forward to his father soon. He was not quite of adult age, but going out and collected new ideas and knowledge was always a goal of the Jamoura. The sooner he got out into the world, the less preconceived knowledge he would have. This would allow him to truly meld into the new societies he found and better ascertain new and unique knowledge. He felt that he was ready, but knew that it was always best to trust the counsel of his elders.

At first, he made no direct reference to leaving the Spire, but rather just hinted at it and put the idea into the minds of the others at least. As time passed, however, he started dropping heavier and heavier hints on them. While he had yet to outright say that he wanted to go out into the outside world, he was preparing the others for his eventual asking. While they could not necessarily stop him from leaving, he would much prefer to have their consent and advise when he did leave. He knew that he could only hint at it for so long though. He would soon have to ask so that he could prepare his journey. He had no intentions of leaving immediately anyways. The journey would be quite rigorous and he only faintly knew what to expect. To fully prepare himself would take some time and preparation. There was not much use in rushing anyways. It seemed that many societies changed quickly and rapidly compared to the Jamoura. In that sense, it would be much better to just be prepared for anything.

After a little more hesitation, Jarth decided that he would just go ahead with his ideas and ask. When he asked, though, he was not met with the response that he had expected. It seemed that many of the elders could see that he was quite uneasy and felt that it would be best for him to explore the world now and travel when he could. They also felt that it would be good to send a younger Jamoura into the world for it would give them a new opinion of the outside that was less influenced by their own thoughts and ideas. Of course, much consideration would have to be put into the journey, but they felt that it was for the best. Once everything was ready and prepared he could be on his way.

After a long time of preparation, it was deemed that Jarth could be on his way. Almost every aspect had been taken into account of and he was bringing enough supplies to survive almost twice what the journey entailed. It was better to be safe than sorry though. Their people had only recently started to branch out again and had little information about the outside. The journey would give them vital information about the outside world as well as how it was to travel through the country. While he could stop at several cities along the way, his main goal was to go to Syliras since it seemed to be the largest center of civilization. Due to that fact, it did seem like the best place to go.

After saying his good-byes to his family and friends, he set out on his way. He personally disliked travelling with so many supplies, but knew that it would come in useful on his journey. While he did trust his own survival skills, he knew that there would be different environments and conditions as he travelled and he might not be able to easily find supplies there. He supposed that it was not worth the risk, however, and if he had to resort to finding a nearby civilization they could be days away. He had to give the elders credit in thinking everything out. Almost every aspect of his journey had been determined by them. As long as everything went to plan, it would not take him to long to make his way to Syliras. It was not exactly a short journey, but he felt that he was up to the task.

For the most part, Jarth stuck to the coast. This provided him with constant access to the water as well as the fact that he would not have to worry about traversing some of the larger hills. He also enjoyed the coast and found the sound of water refreshing and calming. While he did continue to meditate regularly, he the time he spent on this considerably for the sake of time. Most of his time spent meditating was during the night when it was too dangerous to travel. This gave still gave him adequate time to meditate and over the days there was much to think about. The majority of his thoughts were about what he would find in Syliras and how people would respond to the presence of a Jamoura. He was sure that there had been others in the past, but it was not exactly a common encounter. He supposed he would figure out soon enough.

As he drew nearer to the city, he started to encounter more and more concentrated populations of humans. They took to his presence strangely, not exactly knowing what to do with him. He had no idea of the attitudes towards his species in certain areas and so tried to limit his contact with others. He did not need any hostilities at the moment. The last thing he wanted to do was have to fight. While he was sure he could handle a few humans, he did not want any conflicts arising in the local area. Once he got to Syliras, he would obviously try to make more contact but he saw no reason to do so now. After several more days of travelling, the city’s gates came into view. It seemed like his journey was finally over.

When he reached the gates, there was some sceptical at his arrival. A Jamoura coming all the way out to the city was quite a rare occurrence and maybe happened once in a lifetime for the humans. He would have preferred to have just been able to go in quietly, but it seemed like everyone just had to know that a Jamoura was there. After making his way through quite the bustling crowds, he found himself at a small inn. He quickly took a room there, all the while getting strange looks from everyone in the room, and went up quickly. After unpacking his few personal belongings, he rested for the rest of the day. He had not been able to actually take a break for quite some time and found the rest quite needed.

After he started to adjust to life in the city, he found it quite strange. Simply put, it was just so different than anything he had known. The people around him always seemed to be in a rush and always had something to do. He supposed that with such a shorter lifespan they needed to always be doing something to actually get anything done. He personally did not like the bustle of the city, but knew that it was his best chance of gaining a wide variety of knowledge about the outside world. At the same time, however, he realized that the money he did have would not last forever. While the elders had given him a fair sum, he would have to find some way to save money or gain some soon. After searching around for a good time he found a nice little house within the city. The house was rather small, but it was a fairly good deal and one that he could not afford to pass up.

As he has started to adapt more to the city, he has spent more time in it and interacting with others. For the most part, he has still kept his relationships with others at a minimum and still spends a lot of time within his home. The new experiences he has found in the city have given him much to meditate on. He still can hardly fathom the size and scope of such a city with its entire people. As he would tackle many situations, however, he has done it piece by piece; analyzing and discovering only a section at a time. In this way, he believes he will be able to grasp the city as a whole better and understand everything inside of it. To do this, however, he feels that he will have to find someone that knows about the world. Who that will be or what that will lead to are still heavy questions in his mind.
