33rd of Summer 512AV

Nai'shee was at the library, again, trying to get something done. Her Reimancy classes didn't go to well since she was too lazy to read any of the recommended books. Now, when she finally decided she isn't going to waste one more Miza on not trying hard, she took the one Satevis recommended her, Woodsworth's, who also started with the same element as her, water. Well, at the beginning she was reading the material. First page of the material. But not so long after she found herself reading a book on acting. It fascinated her to some point, yet she would never become actress. But it was indeed an useful thing, not just art. She was overthinking finding a new job. If the old one served her for so long, it will last a while more until she gets stuff in life sorted. Unfortunately, job was on that stuff list. Along with her classes. She sighted, putting away book about acting. She tried to read again and, surprisingly, she found the book interesting. She began taking some notes, when she remembered to give back the other book.

She stood and went to the bookshelf. It was so many students around that she had to wait for her order to put a book away. She already began to be annoyed. Whole student life changed her. She began to rush into things. She didn't have time for herself. She didn't even consider studying something she does for herself anymore. And she wanted to be Nai'shee from back then. She surpassed the wish to yell out for bored ones to go out and have fun, and looked back at the book she was reading. She was, indeed, becoming an actress, without even trying. She was wearing her first mask, the school girl mask.

Lucas didn’t particularly care about the library per se. His favourite subject – drawing – didn’t necessarily require the use of books. At least he’d gotten by just fine by just drawing so far and sitting in the occasional class. Besides, he wanted to develop his own style and not become famous because his work was just like some well known artist’s.

As for Voiding, how much could you possibly write about some kind of portal?

The reason why he was here was the rumour that there was a ghost in the building. He absolutely wanted to talk to it. It probably knew a lot, living in the university library. It could probably tell him all kinds of stories about the professors and the students, and maybe it would even help him prank people. That was something that ghosts were particularly good in.

He examined every shelf and every table, and then he carefully inspected the librarian, but the old woman didn’t act possessed. Neither did any of the students that were here, busy learning. Some of them were working so hard that they put the squires in Syliras to shame.

He briefly considered asking the librarian if she knew where the ghost was, but she didn’t seem like the kind of person that would appreciate questions about anything but books, so he decided to turn to one of the students for help. He decided to let the older ones be – those were always the most serious ones and least adventurous ones – and picked a girl that was close to his own age instead.

And thus Nai’shee could hear somebody ask, „You didn’t happen to see a ghost?“ If she looked up from her book, she would see a red haired boy standing there, looking at her questioningly and grinning slightly.

Nai'shee rose her sigh at the boy who spoke to her and laughed. She heard few rumors about the ghost around here, but nothing in particular. It wasn't weird for someone to search for it, but it was funny for some reason. When she calmly thought about it there was no point in her laugh. She did believe in ghosts, her father always told her that they were real, but not as scary as some children thought. She looked at the boy, with her eyes glittering from laugh. He boy stood shorter than her, much shorter, but yet his face seemed mature. He was probably older than her. She didn't examine him too carefully, since she hurried to reply, since she didn't want to sound rude laughing like that.

"Sorry. No, I didn't see it, I cannot see ghosts." She heard there were people who could, but she never saw such a being. "Yet, I heard rumors about it. Like some students noticing some weird presence at night." To that point her voice seemed serious, curious. She would gladly inspect the whole ghost story, but she had no ability to detect it, so she considered it useless. This was one of the rare cases when she had to accept she can't do anything without wasting too much time, will and determination which should be directed upon something else. She didn't have enough interest in the ghost to spend seasons studying about them and nights in the library. Still, there was one more option. "What about you? Can you see ghosts?", she asked with hope in her voice, lowering her tone a bit, in case it was a secret and because they were at library, anyways.

Lucas furrowed her brow as she laughed at his question and looked at her, confused. „What’s so funny?“ he wanted to know and placed his hands on his hips. „Is it my hair? The way I dress? Just to let you know, I’m not a dirty Inarta bastard as you may believe, but a respectable university student, and I even work for a professor.“ He sounded quite proud as he said the last bit, although pride made way to confusion again very quickly as she claimed that she couldn’t see ghosts. He furrowed his brow some more.

„I thought everybody could see ghosts as long as the ghosts in question want to be seen“, he said. „Why can’t you? Do you have some strange kind of illness?“ He made a step towards her and looked at her closely, but there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with her. She looked like a normal girl. Maybe she was saying that she couldn’t see ghosts because she was possessed, and the ghost inside of her told her to keep its presence a secret!

„Of course I can see ghosts“, he answered. „There was this house in Syliras where ghosts regularly came and went. Some of them were quite interesting. I even had a dead friend for a while.“ He lowered his voice as well because the librarian looked kind of scary and might inform Hadrian of his bad behaviour.

„The ghost is not inside of you, is it? Do you want to help me find it?“

She surpassed laughter again when he began to wonder what's funny. "No, no, no, it was just the fact you were searching for the ghost. I don't know why it's so funny, I never actually met anyone who was trying to find the library's ghost." Oh, he works for a Professor! She wondered which one. If he's an Assistant that means he's pretty talented for something and she was already interested in free classes on whatever it was.

"I don't know", she said blinking quicker than normally. Was that true? Could it be something completely normal to see ghosts and she just didn't? People wouldn't talk about it, as if they wouldn't talk about breathing since it was normal. But why would she be the only one unable to see them? Was she really ill. "Maybe I can, but I never saw one", she said shrugging. "Is it really completely normal?" She couldn't think of a reason nobody mentioned that to here up until now.

"What?!", she said louder than she should have. "It can- It can be inside of me? How do I know if it possessed me? Do I feel it? How do you get it out? Can a ghost possess anybody? Can't I defend?" She was completely panicking, ignoring his next question. Of course she would help him find the ghost, it was her duty as one of the most curious students here, but this drove her crazy. She needed to know more about ghosts immediately, she could have ended up who knows how by not knowing this stuff.

„No?“ Lucas asked incredulously as she told him that she had never met anybody who was trying to find the library’s ghost. „I always thought that university students were especially curious, but maybe she …“ He pointed at the librarian who was standing somewhere, sorting books into the correct shelves. „… scares them all away. Anyway, if nobody else has ever looked for the ghost, I’ll be the first, and if I find it I’ll become famous. Wouldn’t that be great?“

„Yes, it’s normal, pretty much. There are places where ghosts walk on the street, next to the living.“

He hadn’t expected the outburst that came next. For him ghosts were normal, and he actually hoped a ghost would try to possess him one day because he wanted to know what it was like.

„Yes, ghosts can get into people. As for how you know, did you act strangely recently? Have you heard voices? Have you felt as if you didn’t have your body under control? Or do you miss whole parts of your day sometimes?“

Truth to be told, Lucas had never met anybody who was possessed, but he figured those questions made sense. If he were possessed, he’d probably have one or more of those problems.

„I’m not sure how you can get the ghost out again though and how you defend yourself against one. I’m pretty sure that there is some kind of magic that deals with ghosts though, and the university probably has a professor that specialises in ghosts as well.“

"Hey, I just said I never met anyone! I'm student for less then a year!" She was sure that there were plenty of students who sought for the ghost. It's impossible that nobody ever wondered what would it be like. Especially those as Nai'shee who did not know anything about ghosts, they would want to meet one. Except, of course, if librarian scared them away. Woman wasn't too scary for Nai'shee, but she felt certain anxiety when talking around here or forgetting to give back a book.

"Really? I didn't know that..." She imagined ancient looking streets full of people and ghosts. In her mind ghosts were different because they looked like they're fading. It did not scare her, the image seemed peaceful. She did not know anything about ghosts and she wouldn't imagine them suffering or being sad.

She thought about it. Except her routine of forgetting to do some daily stuff which was perfectly normal part of her life nothing came up. "No", she answered once to all the questions, "I guess I'm not possessed. But I would like to be able to defend from that. Hey, there must be a book about that around here! I'm sure that would help us find the ghost!" After short silence, she added in her defense: "I went to librarian three times in past five minutes".

„Oh“, Lucas made as she informed him that she had been a student for less than a year. „So you don’t know a lot of people at the university yet?“

„I can tell you all about ghosts and where to find them“, he promised her. „If you aren’t too scared. The only ghost I can’t seem to locate on my own is the library ghost.“

When he had wondered if she was possessed, she had been close to freaking out – and he had no idea how to deal with girls on the verge of a mental breakdown - so he was pleased to discover that she was calming down again. As she guessed that she was not possessed, he breathed a sigh of relief.

„Good, because as I said I have no idea how to get a ghost out again. But maybe the library ghost itself could tell us. Or a book.“ He nodded at her suggestion. „But I’m not going to ask that woman about the ghost or the book. You’ll go and talk to her, and I’ll stand next to you, listen and quietly support you.“

Unlike Nai’shee he found the librarian really scary which was probably strange since he didn’t have a problem with ghosts at all. He could very well imagine that the old woman murdered lazy students in her spare time and practiced malediction or another sinister kind of magic.

He cast another glance at her just to make sure that she was still organizing her books and not plotting evil, and then he turned to Nai'shee again, hoping that she would agree.

"Well, I made few friends here, but I'm not really regular information broker", she said, joking. She maybe knew a dozen of people here and greeted few dozens, but not more than that. However, she somehow managed to end up in right circles, so she found people to train and have fun with and persons who would employ her once in a while when she's broke.

"Oh, please do! If it's something I can learn quickly I don't see why not." She thought about it for a while. Can ghosts see them? She always thought they could. So, if she knew a ghost, it could easily spy on persons who don't know about it and nobody would notice!

She lifted a sigh, noticing boys anxiety. He was obviously uneasy about the librarian. She guessed she can't help it and she turned in her direction, but then stopped, unsure what to ask. She decided not to bother asking the boy, since he seemed like someone knowing more on this from practice, than theory. She approached the librarian. Boys anxiety transfered to usually open and carefree Nai'shee and she was a bit stunned.

"We- We sought for a book", well, that was obvious, "about ghosts."

"You mean Spiritism book or just myths?", librarian asked. She was nice and she didn't bother pointing out that would be the third book in past few minutes for Nai'shee. The girl exchanged sight with the boy she just met.

"I guess it's Spiritism book. We want to know more about possession."

"Spiritism it it, then", librarian replied. ]"I believe if you go to the section W4 that you'll be able to find book called Whisper, by Arthur Novosinsk, he was student of famous Spiritist and I think his view could be the easiest for you to understand." She freely assumed Nai'shee was new to the filed, probably by the fact she didn't even know the name of discipline.

"Thank you."

"Don't forget to submit if you're taking any book!", librarian added, as they directed themselves to W4.

"See? It wasn't so scary."

Lucas stood behind Nai’shee, watching the librarian who he considered a potential murderer and master of torture closely. He prided himself on being pretty good at figuring people out, and there was just something about that seemingly harmless lady that was probably older than his grandmother that he didn’t like at all. He wouldn’t want to be alone with her in a room if it could be avoided.

So he was quite surprised as he listened to the conversation between her and Nai’shee. She sounded almost normal, as if she didn’t secretly want to drag a couple of unsuspecting students into the backroom and cook them. Why, she was even halfway helpful!

„I don’t know this Arthur Novosinsk“, he remarked as the made their way over to section W4. „Do you think his book is any good? Will it help us catch the library ghost?“
