19th of Summer, 512AV

Footsteps crunched through the snowy streets of Avanthal as a boy wound his way out to a relatively small, tree-spotted area hidden near the back of the city. Behind him trotted a dog, a two year old Inganu Deepwoods Dog, her golden fawn coat gleaming in the early morning sunlight. The pair slowed when they reached their destination, and the boy leant his shoulder against a tree for a brief moment.

Ashca sat in the snow, her hindlegs folding neatly beneath her, and looked up at her new owner with large dark eyes. Nate watched her back, a small smile twitching at the corner of his mouth. He had purchased the dog less than a day ago, but he already liked her a lot. When they had returned from the Menagerie she had put up with numerous people fawning over her, Nate’s mother being the worst offender. At night, she had curled up quite happily on the floor at the foot of his bed, falling asleep within moments.

Being two years old already, Nate figured that she had already had some training in tracking, the job she had been bred to do. She was also meant to retrieve things, which was perfect. Nate hunted with arrows rather than hand weapons, so if he felled something Ashca should, in theory, go and get it. He picked a small twig from the ground and waved it in the dogs general direction before throwing it as hard as he could. Nate couldn’t see where it landed, so it had either buried itself or gone further than he thought he could throw.

Ashca didn’t move, instead she continued to watch Nate. He raised an eyebrow at the dog before motioning in the direction of the stick. ”Well go and get it!”
Slowly, Ashca stood up before trotting off to retrieve it. If dogs could roll their eyes, Nate was sure she would have done. Who would have thought that playing fetch was something a dog didn’t like to do?

Ashca wasn’t gone for long, and she soon reappeared a little ways off with the stick clamped between her teeth. The golden-coated dog placed it carefully at Nate’s feet before moving away to sit in the exact same place she had earlier. He picked it up and waved it again, but she was quite obviously indifferent towards the game. He found it amusing that a dog of her breed didn’t like to play fetch.

Nate tossed the stick over his shoulder and Ashca didn’t bat an eyelid. He crouched down and motioned with his head for her to come over to him. She stood and trotted over before resting her head on his bent knee. He gave her a stroke between her ears and smiled. At least she understands signal commands... It seemed that one benefit of buying an older dog over a puppy was that they already knew a thing or two.

He stood up, fishing in his pocket and pulling out an old bone. He had saved it from a kill he had made on a previous hunt after the animal had been stripped of its meat to feed some of the Hold. Ascha’s eyes were fixed on the bone, and Nate smiled again. He let her smell it, and then pulled it back before she could chew on it. He held his hand up, palm facing her. ”Stay here.” He took a few steps away from her, and she looked back at him with her large eyes but didn’t move.

Nate then proceeded to walk as quickly as he could, weaving at random through the sparsely wooded area. When he had reached almost the other side, he scuffed snow away from the ground with his hands and placed the animal bone onto the exposed dirt. He then piled the snow back onto it before turning back to the way he had come from. He chose another route at random to make sure he didn’t retrace his steps, and soon reached Ashca again.

The dog looked up at Nate expectantly. He held out his hands and let her smell the reside the bone had left behind, and then motioned to the trees behind him. ”Go find it!” Ashca jumped up, apparently much more excited about this game than the previous one, and she tore off immediately, nose to the ground.

Nate stepped back, leant against a tree and shoved his hands in his pockets. The sounds of Ashca's paws hurrying through the snow had faded, and he wondered how easy it would be for her to find the buried bone. Probably not that hard at all. Dogs had a far superior sense of smell to humans and she had been trained to find things. Plus Nate was most likely not all that great at hiding it in the first place.

A couple of chimes more passed before he heard what he though could be the dog returning. Sure enough, moments later Ashca appeared with her face covered in snow, the bone in her mouth. Nate grinned and slid down the tree so that he was crouched again. The dog immediately trotted over without invitation and lay down in front of him before proceeding to gnaw on the bone.

He watched her as she chewed, thinking of the things they could do together. She would be invaluable as a hunting companion, that was for certain. Nate remembered when he hunted with Sheva earlier in the season. Even though she had been in her human form, she had detected wolves long before Nate had even registered anything else was even there. He hoped that Ashca could do the same.

He patted the dog on her head and stood up before starting to walk back towards the main city. She looked up at him curiously before following, the bone still held firmly in her mouth. They may not be close yet, but Nate knew for sure that Ashca was going to be special to him.

Notes: This was a really nice simple training thread for Nate and Ashca. Not a whole lot happened but they did work on their relationship which is important for any Frostfawn. I also liked that you gave Ashca a bit of a personality, that’s always a nice touch.
