26 Summer, 512 The Red Diamond Tavern was busy that night as Nate stepped through the door. Ever since the snow had returned business had been booming for the place. Everyone wanted to come in and laugh at how worried they had been over a mug of ale or hot chocolate and dream of a snowy future. The well-lit main room seemed to lack a single empty chair or cushion. Every table was filled with boisterous Vantha shouting stories at each other or swapping winks with their sweetheart. The large fireplace was surrounded by people, two to a cushion, as a man stood before fire recounting his tussle with a dire wolf. It was too loud for Nate’s taste that night, but leaving so soon seemed pointless when he had just arrived. Perhaps the darker upstairs would be better. Most Vantha left the upstairs accommodations for world weary travelers and couples seeking privacy but at least it wouldn’t be as crowded as the roaring downstairs. Squeezing past the crowd would not be an easy accomplishment. Drink and egos had made everyone stingy with their manners and it seemed like stepping aside each individual was a new trial. Getting the attention of a barmaid or tavernmaster wasn’t any easier, if he chose to buy a drink. They were busy, certainly, but they attended to each request fairly and in order. The polite and fair staff was one of the reasons why the tavern was so popular. Climbing the rickety stairs to darker seating above revealed a startling sight. It was full up there as well. The upstairs seating was almost never full but tonight was of course different. Everyone seemed to need a drink out. The lone empty chair was pulled up to a table with a single occupant, a short Vantha woman. The woman had black hair streaked with red and would be recognizable to any resident of Avanthal who had a pair of eyes and ears. People tended to know who you were when you were the reimancy expert for Icewatch. Even in a city filled with Morwen’s gnosis bearers magic experts were well-known individuals deserving of respect and wariness in equal degrees. Perhaps Morwen had fated that empty chair next to Kaivana Iceglaze because there were things weighing on Nate's mind that few could answer and Kaivana was one of the few. |
