OOC"...for fear of accidentally catching a glimpse of glistening gadgeteer..."

LMAO! That's an awesome line!

Tock frowned at the slight hesitation, but decided to let it go. She didn't know if she really looked good, or if he was just saying that to placate her. But while under any other circumstances she would have badgered him until she was sure she was getting an honest answer, tonight was different. Tonight, whether she liked it or not (and she most certainly did NOT!), she had to pretend she was someone else.

It had better prove to be worth it.

Without a word of thanks to the dressmaker and her assistant, she headed out the door. Though of course, Yvette followed after her and called out as she walked away, "Don't forget, my dear... When everyone asks where you got your fabulous dress, be sure and tell them, 'I got it at Yvette's!"

Tock led Monty back to her house so she could drop off her tools and her dirty clothes. Though she wasn't willing to attend the dinner completely without her babies' support, nor would she go anywhere defenseless. She had to be prepared in case any poshy young men decided to get fresh.

Thus, she made some adjustments to one of her belts so she could strap it to her thigh, and reached up between her legs to strap a dagger there. She also took Handy and stuck him up under her skirts as well. Despite what her boss had said, she was NOT going to this dinner without at least one of her babies with her.

"Now yous be'ave down 'ere!" she called out to under her skirts, leaning over and wagging a finger between her legs. Then she turned to Monty, oblivious to any strange looks he might be giving her for her perfectly ordinary and innocent behavior, and said, "Awright, les'go git 'is over wit'..."

OOCI figure this puts us just about ready for part 2? So if you want to post your reply and then go ahead and submit it for grading, that works for me. Maybe have your post take us up to arriving at the party, and my next post will be post one of the new thread and take us inside. Whatever works. But however far along you want your post to take us, it should conclude part one.

The Meaning Of It All (Monty)

Postby Montaine on September 11th, 2012, 9:12 pm

The next stop for the ultimately unwilling and arguably atypical trio of party guests was Montaine’s squalid little flat across from the glassworks. Along the way he tried his hardest to encourage Tock to practise her pronunciations and endeavour to enhance her enunciations and remember, above all else, to be polite. At the end of the day, it was upon that final request that the success of the dinner would hang. A quirky manner of speech or an inclination towards what high society viewed as “unwomanly” topics of conversation might not harm the girl’s prospects, and might in fact endear her to her prospective patrons, but being disrespectful, even unintentionally, was a sure way to lose their favour. Not only was it the most important factor, but it would also be, to the glassworker’s mind, the most difficult for the garrulous gadgeteer to master.

When they arrived at his building, Monty bounded up the steps and shooed Tock away when she tried to follow him. The woman had seen him various states of undress before, when he was drinking, or drunk, or had had a drink or two the previous night and awoken with too much of a hangover to care, but when he was conscious and fairly self aware, there was something inherently uncomfortable about having her there as he stripped down.

He stepped into his uncomfortably fashionable trousers and grabbed his white, silk shirt from his chest, but instead of putting it on, he sat down at the end of his bed. This was a crossroads. For years he had sat happily in his stall on the Market Road that split the city right down the middle. To the south lay West Street, and the University, and the temples, and the Lord’s Residence, and the manor houses of the rich and influential. To the north lay East Street, and beggar town, and the crumbled, old, ramshackle shacks of the poor and desperate. As a child his world had been the north, the life of the pauper, but his future seemed to lie south, within the halls of the rich and powerful his friends and neighbours had so disdained growing up.

He didn’t want to be of West Street, rubbing elbows with the affluent. But he didn’t want to return to the world of East Street either, amongst the thieves and the prostitutes and the beggars in the gutters. He wanted to sit in his stall, on the Market Road, between the worlds.

But you so rarely got what you wanted.
